I interviewed four different companies before finding the right fit for my home remodel. Two were terrible communicators and couldnt show up on time if their lives depended on it. One had good reviews (and a slightly lower price) but talked to me like I was some dumb little lady. And then there was New Generation Contracting.Ki Gengler, the owner, had just started his company less than a year ago, but I found examples of his work onlineexcellent photos, glowing comments, and obvious talent. But thats not what sold me. Ki was polite, timely, professional, and most importantly, a great listener. We instantly clicked on the vision for my weird, unique, old Round House. Its a one-of-a-kind place that had been absolutely wrecked over the past 50 years by bad owners, neglect, and a string of DIY nightmares.Lets set the scene: it smelled like mold, rot, cigarettes, wet dog, and despair. There was hidden damage in every corner, a mystery bathroom that wasnt even on the floor plan, trees ready to fall on the house, and a fiberglass roof no one was brave enough to touch. And yet I wanted it. Ki wanted the challenge. Honestly, we might both be a little crazybut in the best way.As a former college coach, I tend to analyze everything to death. But I also love taking calculated risks when I can envision the reward. I knew Ki would treat my vision like his own. John Wooden once said, Id rather have a little experience and a lot of talent than a lot of experience and a little talent. Thats exactly how I saw hiring Ki and his new company.Ohand did I mention I gave him a chunk of money and then left for Texas for a month? Yeah. That happened. So maybe Im the crazier one.Let me tell you thoughit paid off. Every possible thing that could go wrong did. Every time we thought, That probably doesnt need replacing, it did. But Ki never flinched. He found creative solutions, cared deeply about the details, and made sure the finished product was better than I ever imagined.Yes, we went over budgetbut not because of him. Things just come up with a complete gut remodel, and I kept adding ideas along the way. Through it all, Ki never acted like the stereotypical contractor everyone warns you about. Hes not typical. Hes rare.Im beyond grateful to Ki, his family (for sacrificing time with him over the past few months), and his awesome crewJosh, Devon (yesher), Mr. Eugene, and everyone else that left their mark on the place. They brought my home back to life. Honestly, I get choked up thinking about it. The last few years have been brutaldivorce, surgeries, career change, medical issues, financial stressbut now Im sitting in my beautiful home by the water, in a quiet, friendly neighborhood. Its not the beach, but it feels like peace.If youre looking for someone who will treat your home with the same care and pride as his own, Ki is your guy. His company, New Generation Contracting, should be your go-to for any project, big or small. If he can handle the Round House, everything else will feel like a walk in the park.People always say, They dont build things like they used to, or No one takes pride in their work anymore.
