A gym Danny was previously employed at paired me up with him as my trainer. I signed up there after spending two years at a boxing gym. My goal at the time was to incorporate more strength training into my routine, but continue boxing from time to time as that is a workout I truly enjoy. Ive been training with Danny now for almost a year. Prior to working with him, I had a lot of mixed feelings about working with a Personal Trainer. I no longer feel that way. Ive done strength training, boxing, kickboxing, and circuits with Danny. He continues to help me break bad habits I developed from my previous boxing gym. Im never bored with my PT sessions, I actually look forward to them and that is very important if youre just starting off making a lifestyle change, or continuing to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In June 2015, Danny put me up to a challenge to lose 6 lbs before my next weigh in with him, and with hard work and determination, I lost 8 lbs that month! This was after bouncing around the same weight for the past few years. This gave me the motivation to participate in a 90 day challenge at my gym, which led to me getting back down to my High School weight from 20 years ago. I highly recommend Danny has a trainer. The culture in this dojo is very special. You can describe it as a family, but it is more than that. I have been training consistently for 1 year at Victory alongside fighters experienced in the cage and other novices like myself. I feel I have quickly improved in strength, body composition, skill and flexibility. I could not keep this experience to myself--I signed up my 6 year boy in the kids MMA class (I am looking forward to enrolling my other boy when he becomes old enough). Learning to 'focus' is key; something that I found lacking in the kids programs at other local Karate park district classes and Tae Kwon Do schools. My wife has also got in on the action. I should start by saying that, while I often read them, I NEVER write reviews. That being said I felt that my experience warranted one in this case. I first met coach Miguel at a place called Hybrid Martial Arts & Fitness, which I strongly recommend looking into if you have any interest in trying out or further improving your skills in Taekwondo, MMA, Muay Thai, BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) and more. The staff is quite friendly and have shown me nothing but kindness since my first day there. Additionally the vibe is not an egotistical one, a problem that definitely exists at other gyms. Regardless of your amount of experience everyone is welcome and everyone is safe. But I digress. Initially I went to Hybrid to hone my skills in the sport of boxing. I took some group classes then started training with Miguel one-on-one. Now you should know that before I even came to Hybrid I had a strong foundation in the fundamentals of boxing and have learned from men and women alike over the last 4 years who have either boxed competitively or have been practitioners of the sport for a long time. It was not until I began training with Miguel that I realized how much I still had to learn to truly become a boxer. Each and every session is well thought out. Of course the basics came into play first, there were many foot work drills along with heavy bag work, mitt work, as well as thorough concentration on head movement and sparring. What really impresses me with Miguel is that he takes time to learn about your background in other areas and will then incorporate it into your training regimen. For example, I have a background in wushu (kung fu) and a little experience in taekwondo. With that in mind, Miguel was able to take very small elements of what I had learned in those practices, specifically foot work, and tie them into my training as a boxer. This was very unique, in my opinion, because it helped me to not only better my skills but also create a certain style and become a boxer of my own. Every session was educational and challenging. Sparring is safe and controlled, never overbearing. Most importantly, Miguel has a bonafide passion for his craft. Encouraging, punctual, and dedicated are just a few of the words I would use to describe him. If you have even the slightest interest in boxing, or any combat sport, I strongly recommend signing up with coach Miguel. He's nothing short of a true martial artist. You won't be disappointed.
Where do I begin? As an overweight man in his early 30s, I realized that if I didn't start taking care of my body now, I'd be setting the stage for future health problems. I can't stand gyms (too repetitive), and I have little patience for martial arts that serve no real life purpose. If I'm going to be stuck in a life or death situation, high-kicking attackers all around me isn't going to work. I whittled down which martial arts would actually interest me, and it came down to Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. Lucky for me, Threshold had BOTH, and is right by my train stop and home. How much more convenient can you get?!? The Muay Thai classes are great. There's no "line up side by side and mimic my moves" here! The moves or combos are demonstrated multiple times, then your job is to practice them one for one with a partner. You learn to read real life opponents, not am imaginary figure taking all of your shots. It is fast paced and intense, but the methodology is such that even a rookie won't feel overwhelmed. Class is competitive, but at the same time the more advanced students do their best to get all new members to their level. Our instructors, Bill Shimuk and Ed Serra, have years of experience, and have both the patience and passion to impart their skills to us. Seriously, I haven't felt this great in over a decade.
