Keith installed recessed lighting in our vintage condo living room. Our building was built in 1927 and converted in 1990 so anytime you open a wall or ceiling there will be surprises, but Keith knew exactly how to handle every issue. Competitive pricing, great work, and Keith is a great guy - definitely recommend.

All work was completed on time and on budget. Very high quality work. Had absolutely no objection when I added on a few additional smaller projects as well. Had him repaint my kitchen, master bath, guest bath, guest bedroom and first floor power room. All work looks simply amazing! Would definitely hire him again in the future! Sourced through Thumbtack. For being my first experience using Thumbtack, I was definitely satisfied with its role in linking homeowners with contractors.

They did a great job. They completed tile work for our dining and living room. The work was complicated with a different design in our dining room that then needed to flow to the diagonal design in the remaining space. They cared about the details and getting everything just right. I would highly recommend.

I hired Kosterna Construction to do various drywall projects, including building the framing and insulating the walls. They also put in support beams where needed, built a sub floor for tile in the kitchen, installed an exterior door with frame, built frames/molding around windows, evened out a sloping floor/ ceiling. I was able to buy my own materials and paid them for the labor. They are very experienced in all new construction and remodeling. Very nice, reliable, easy to work with. I thought they did great work for a fair price and plan on hiring them for future projects! attached are some photos

We hired Raul and his team to do a full update for our kitchen and dining room. We had cabinets painted, new backsplash, wainscoting added, and painting. They were great with communication and timeliness of the project. An added bonus that they were as tidy as one can be while completing this type of project! The end result is amazing, totally transformed our home and now planning to hire them to update the flooring!

WOW....I don't know what other way to describe my experience with Master Craft & Design! Eddie and his team did an amazing job turning an unfinished part of our basement into an amazing guest bedroom. He worked with us on selecting the best flooring, colors and design for the room. He also custom built our master bedroom closet and hallway closet, transforming them from a standard wire rack closet into custom build wooden shelving and multiple areas for our hanging clothes. We didn't know exactly what we wanted the closets to look like, so he patiently worked with us to create a design that was beyond our wildest dreams. He also transformed our laundry room from a cramped, disorganized space into a beautiful, functional space. For every project, he used top quality materials. He also threw in a couple of fixes on some annoying issues we had with the house (doors not closing right, swapping out some standard light switches for dimmers, etc) free of charge. He finished everything ahead of schedule and never changed our price from the original quote. His team also showed the highest respect for our home by putting down paper and hanging plastic to contain any mess. They even brought our trash cans up from the end of the driveway after trash day! Master Craft & Design have created some lifelong customers in us!

I had old tile to be removed and new one to be installed. A wall where the fuse box is, had a hole. It was replaced by Ed and his crew did nice work and very reasonable. Now my laundry room looks better than before. I'm definitely hiring him for my future projects.

I was extremely happy with the work that Robinson from Perfect Painters performed at my home. The painting he (and one of his partners) did was gorgeous! He did a great job and he went over and above what was requested. It was a fair price and a good value for the money. I absolutely love the rooms he painted - every time I walk into them it's like breathing a breath of fresh air! Anytime I need any painting done in the future, Rob at Perfect Painters is the person I will definitely call! Professional and personable, he gets the job done, on time and on task. Excellent job, A+.

Expert Style did a great job painting my living room and a small hallway. I met with Eli on May 22nd to discuss the work I wanted to have done and he sent one of his employees out to do the work on June 4th. The work took longer than I expected but the quality and detail of the work was worth the extra time. The floor was cleaned, curtains rehung, and furniture moved back into place after the job was finished.I would definitely recommend this company for painting.

Last winter, the snow really took a toll on my roof and subsequently, my living room. Once I got the roof fixed, I needed the living room ceiling repaired and painted. I contacted Perfect Interiors and Ed (the owner) gave me a very reasonable quote to do the entire room. The workers arrived on time, repaired the water damage and painted the ceiling. Ed helped me pick out the perfect wall color as well as an accent color for one wall. I can hardly believe it's the same room! Ed was so helpful I decided to have him remodel my master bathroom. I didn't know where to start but he assisted with choosing a vanity top, sink, fixtures, tile and paint colors. Once again, they did a wonderful job. Five stars!!

STAR CONSTRUCT is the absolute best remodeling company you can find. Ady and his crew are responsible, kind, trustworthy, meticulous, clean/neat, priced very fair for his excellent flawless workmanship. You will not find a better crew or better contractor. They remodel my whole house, 6 bedrooms, kitchen, living room dining room and 2 bathrooms, and every detail was perfect. I am just thrilled with work they did, they made my house like new. I am so glad I found him. Thank you again Ady, I will tell everyone I know about your professionalism and I will use you again.

We chose Network Remodeling after meeting with the owner Stan Silver because he really listened to what we wanted in a family room and garage remodel. He provided helpful suggestions and his price was very fair. When we asked for changes, he was always open to them or would provide a better idea than the one we had. We would definitely work with him again. It was the best and easiest remodel that we have had done.

Excellent service, upfront and honest off the bat. We were looking for an interior designer to really alleviate the hassle of moving into a new home. We were low on time and wanted someone who would manage a project from start to finish. David's offer was to do a free consultation in home with a full walk through free of charge, and his website laid out how the entire process will work so it was 100% up front. From a project managers perspective, that's perfect. We are looking forward to working with David on creating our home and will leave a post review of how things went. Expecting things to go really well.

We have worked with Beacon for two jobs, one big and one small. They replaced our beat-up old parquet floor with carpeting, we changed the plans on installation day, and they still did a fantastic job on time! And we hired them for a complete basement finishing job....taking a big empty unfinished basement and doing everything, from pulling permits to cooperating in the design, building walls and floors and ceiling, involving electricians and HVAC... resulting in a spacious, comfortable, beautiful four-room basement. Beautiful work at a fair price, on-time, and all their crews were simply delightful to work with!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
