I began singing professionally as a result of winning some important Vocal Competitions when still a teenager! I was still a student in college when engaged to sing my first professional role! I've over 40 years in the business, and have sung in many of the world's most prestigious theaters with the operatic legends of our time. I am widely regarded as one of the world's foremost Bass-baritones. It isn't a job -- it's a life style -- if you give it everything you have, the rewards are remarkable.

  • Soulstream Music Studio of Contemporary Voice

    (17 reviews)

Soulstream Music Studio stands out amongst other vocal studios because we are not about "one-size-fits-all" vocal instruction. First and foremost students get to be involved in their own instruction which means they have the freedom to choose the kind of music that they want to learn and that excites them to learn about! Students also get to explore their musical aspirations be they big or small, and to create goals that are realistic and customized to them as individuals. I really enjoy helping people find their voice, not only in terms of their sound but in terms of their unique personality. I love to help people feel confident in what their own sound is; not trying to mimic other singers voices, but cultivating their own genuine voice. Singers who find their true voice find their confidence and find their artistic freedom.

I teach each student individually and cater my teaching methods to what works for THEM. Many teachers teach each student the same way; use the same books, and same exercises for each student. I believe that is not only boring, but incorrect. Some students are more visual, some students need to move more, or create pieces on their own... etc. I love to experiment with students to find out the strongest way they learn and what their 'vocabulary' of learning is; and build from there- using THEIR vocabulary and tools of learning. I love seeing the spark in someone's eye when they learn a new concept and are able to repeat it, or "get" it. It is the biggest thrill of teaching, in my opinion. Watching the light bulb turn suddenly on in someone's brain is so fun!

  • Your True Voice Studio

I specialize in non-classical vocal technique and music. This includes all forms of pop, musical theater, and other genres. Very few teachers have this area of expertise. Do not buy into the myth "If you can sing opera, you can sing anything!" It's just not true. You need to train towards your goals. Seeing improvement in my students.

Greetings and welcome to my studio profile. As a professional singer and teacher, I strive for artistic excellence and customer satisfaction. I want you to be excited about your voice and the progress you are making and will do everything I can to support your growth and progress. I have 10 years of experience in private teaching and would be delighted to apply this knowledge to help you reach your musical goals, whether auditioning for your school musical, preparing for college auditions, joining a church choir, or auditioning for an opera company. I teach a variety of musical styles including classical, musical theater, jazz, and some pop. My goal is for you to discover ease and freedom in your singing, increase your range and vocal stamina, introduce you to different styles of music, and ultimately equip you to sing with confidence and meet your personal musical goals. I graduated with highest honors with a Bachelor's degree in Voice Performance from University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and recently completed my Master's degree in Voice Pedagogy and Performance from Westminster Choir College, graduating with distinction. My studies have taken me abroad to performing programs in Austria, Italy, Serbia, and Canada. I am an active performer and am experienced singing opera, classical music, jazz, musical theater, choral music, a Capella and Baroque chamber music. I am currently singing with the Chicago Master Singers and recently toured with them to Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia. In addition to private voice lessons, I am trained to tutor music theory, music history, sight reading, beginning cello, and Singing diction for Latin, Italian, French, and German. Lesson Details: Lessons are tailored to fit your individual goals and interests. I teach in increments of 30, 45, and 60 minutes based on the student's age and level of experience. Lesson Structure: 5-10 min. warming up your voice 10-15 min. vocal strengthening exercises and solfege (to improve sight-reading and musical skills) 20 min. repertoire coaching 5 min. final questions and assignment for the next week. Repertoire: I am happy to work with you on the songs that you are interested in learning. I also enjoy finding repertoire for you and introducing you to different styles. I often use repertoire to help build vocal skill sets, so that even when we are working on a folk song or classical piece in lessons, the skills you are learning can be directly applied to other styles you are interested in. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to meeting you and discussing your musical goals in person! Feel free to contact me with any questions. Warmly, Sara L.
