Reese & Christian handled extensive plaster repair that was damaged from electrical work in an old house. They were very professional and courteous. They did well to communicate the work before hand and were great about checking in with us along the way to make sure we were updated about the work and had the opportunity to answer any questions. Reese also did extra research for us about ongoing work that we are interested in which was very much appreciated. We will definitely use them for future work!

Priced a fixed price and stuck to it Helped with deck removal and didn't damage the deck. Offered adding the clean out and gave me time to compare costs on the internet. He was offering at half the cost and let me know it wasn't necessary because the current repair is better than the original that lasted 30 years. Stopped work and explained all important steps. Took the time to explain the current status when I got curious. Had the help and tools for everything. Showed the camera view from the house to the sewer when the job was finished. Replaced the deck boards and power washed the deck so it was better then the start. Demonstrated great pride in his work.

Came in to install 2 light fixtures that I purchased for $140+. Ended up fixing the 2 existing fixtures instead for $150 (minor repairs) and I returned 2 new fixtures to Home Depot - saving me $140 on new parts. Really pleased w/ Andy's Electric.

We had initially hired Salvo to fix a botched plumbing job. He was quick to respond to our Thumbtack request, and was also available to provide service soon. During that visit, he mentioned that he also does partial home remodeling - such as tiling, floors, bathrooms, etc. Salvo was very transparent in explaining that he only does the work he feels comfortable doing and has expertise in. We appreciated his honesty as we had recently been suffering through a string of contractors who promised competence, but instead left us with repeated disastrous outcomes. We invited Salvo back to our home to get estimates on 2 incomplete bathroom remodels, that required a lot of re-work due to how our previous contractor approached the project. Salvo gave us a reasonable quote for our project, and assured us that when he was working on our home, he would only be working on our home, so we wouldn't have to go chasing after him. Cut to the end of the bathroom remodel - everything looks fantastic. The tiles are expertly cut and laid, and fixtures are appropriately installed. Any rework that needed to happen, whether it be plumbing or concrete, was done cleanly and efficiently. Additionally, we asked Salvo to install a back splash, kitchen faucet, garbage disposal, and outdoor spigot for the hose. We would highly recommend Salvo for any job, and look forward to working with him in the future, as well. He was reliable, professional, personable, and punctual! He was cooperative in fixing odds and ends as we pointed them out, and he also took initiative to tell us what needed repair or what could be salvaged. He took occasional help from his wife and another family member, and they were all a pleasure to work with.

Needed the front door lock to a building repaired/replaced. Jim was responsive and came out within the day. He kept me in the loop completely which I appreciated since I never met him face to face. Jim was accommodating and took care of everything. Price did change from the initial quote but that was because we needed to end up buying a new lock. Would definitely use him again.

Patrick was one of the first to reply to my Thumbtack lawnmower repair request, and everything went better than expected. He was able to schedule a time sooner than I expected, he completed the repair quickly, and offered a couple helpful suggestions for use and maintenance. I will definitely call Patrick for my next lawnmower maintenance. - Mike in Rolling Meadows

My wife and I needed 3 closet doors put in our bedrooms and I found Brandon on this app. Read reviews about his company before contacting him. The good reviews were right. He came by to give an estimate and it was fair price and he sent his partner Kyle to do the work the next few days. Kyle was always 15min early and very kind and very respectful person. And if you need to step out of your house to do some errands, you can for sure trust him. The quality work they give you will be 100% right we were more than thankful for there service. I highly recommend them to do any renovations or repairs in your home! Thanks Kyle for everything...

Jacek was a godsend in the midst of my first home buying experience and major renovation project. I originally engaged Jacek to perform some wood restoration work on some wooden beams that run across ceiling of my living room. These pine beams were original from when the home was built in 1889 so I wanted a wood restoration specialist with experience in restoring older homes. Jacek fit this mold. The scope was quickly expanded upon seeing the quality of Jacek's work and the passion he had for painting, home renovation and also design work. I ended up having Jacek paint and repair the drywall in nearly every room in the new home I purchased. While time consuming, his attention to detail and insistence that each crack, imperfection or break in the drywall be repaired prior to painting paid HUGE dividends as the walls are now closer to the quality of a new construction home vs. a +125 year old house. Jacek was also able to help me source a reputable carpenter and drywaller (both of which did an outstanding job) for a fraction of the cost of what general contractors / carpenters from Angie's List were trying to charge. Jacek's price was also extremely reasonable in a world where many contractors are only focused on the bottom line and quality of work is an afterthought. While we did go over budget from the original estimate, the overages I paid to Jacek were WELL WORTH IT as he made sure the work was done properly before checking out and stayed a couple extra days to finish the last 5-10% of the work. Outstanding job Jacek. I'm also planning to post some before and after pics of Jacek's work in my West Town Home on the Unique Painting and Decorating Studio Facebook website (he needs more pictures of his work).

Jose did an excellent job repairing and patching several areas in my home that had water damage. He was very meticulous and patient with resolving a "mysterious" leak in a bedroom window. He also installed a new vanity and painted the guest bathroom. I was very impressed with his wood working skills, dry wall repair and painting. The work was seamless; we will definitely use his services in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
