Reese did a fantastic job building our IKEA HEMNES 8 drawer dresser. He brought a helper and they were done in under 3 hours. They also mounted it to the wall for us. He was so very nice & professional. Definitely knows what he's doing when it comes to IKEA furniture.

Kyle did an awesome/creative job in building my new railing/banister around living room going down the stairs. He was very prompt and was very professional in answering questions we had. Took his time to ensure job was done the right way which took him a day to do. He was very reasonable in cost for the quality. I have already been getting compliments on his work.

I hired Kosterna Construction to do various drywall projects, including building the framing and insulating the walls. They also put in support beams where needed, built a sub floor for tile in the kitchen, installed an exterior door with frame, built frames/molding around windows, evened out a sloping floor/ ceiling. I was able to buy my own materials and paid them for the labor. They are very experienced in all new construction and remodeling. Very nice, reliable, easy to work with. I thought they did great work for a fair price and plan on hiring them for future projects! attached are some photos

This review is long overdue. My experience was great. VAC Group built furniture for us in the basement and in the laundry room. It turned out beautiful and it was a pleasure working with them. Their skill is superior, and the products are beautiful. They built a murphy bed for us with shelving around it, cubbies and storage cabinets that also serve as seating area in the basement. We spent more than we would have liked to, but our basement looks like a nice living area, not just like a finished basement. The laundry room was maximized with storage and shelving. We are very happy with the results and will most definitely use them again in the future for building home office furniture. I cannot say enough good things about them. Highly recommend.

My experience with QHR has been excellent! The price was very reasonable (low, actually) and the work was done quickly and in a thorough, professional way. The crew showed up on time, cleaned up perfectly and repaired all areas of the building as agreed. This company is outstanding!!

Dan assisted with designing, building and installing our fireplace mantel. The project required removing and lowering the existing fire place box as well as designing a second mantel which extended 10+ft. He was very responsive, accommodating to our aggressive timeline, and fulfilled most the work off site to minimize the construction on site. Dan even helped mount our TV above the mantel. The final fireplace structure is now a beautiful, and functional staple in our great room. Highly recommended.

I hired David and Bob to replace two patios and a roof deck with trex. The project entailed demo, replacing joists, building benches, laying the trex, and took about 10 days. David and Bob were punctual, worked hard, and I am very happy with the quality of the work. I would not hesitate to recommend them to others. Thanks!

Shelton built a brick mail box and installed a new kitchen sink in my house. The work was very thorough and got finished on promised schedule. Shelton is a personable individual and that trait is important when someone spends that much time in your home. I will hire him for all my future needs in the house.

Brad was awesome to work with. He made a great elevated fort / treehouse for our small yard for our 8 year old. Great communication and really did just want we'd asked for. Hoping he can help us again! Thank you!

I was impressed by the level of service and patience of Aidan during the installation of my TV bracket. My apartment, in a building from the 1920s, is of an unknown wall types, which didn't phase him. Aidan was kind, professional and friendly. I highly recommend him for any project.

The Jates construction team did an amazing job on this project. My wife and I needed to repair our laundry area / utility closet / hallway, which had been destroyed by a roof leak in our condo building (long story). We decided to try thumbtack, not knowing what to expect. Antonio from Jates responded immediately, and scheduled a visit the next day to provide a free estimate/quote. By the end of the day, we received a detailed Quote / job description, with a fair price. Estimated project time would be about 3-5 days. We signed up Jates, and immediately received an email. Jates was on site the very next day, completed the project in 3 days, always showed up on-time, and even gave us advice on paint colors and the doors (went with their paint suggestion - Dolphin Fin, a blueish/grey, by Behr at Home Depot, and love the look). They also helped us install a cat door for the utility room (where we are putting the litterbox)! Antonio provided updates throughout each day, and was very responsive. The entire team was very professional and friendly. Overall we are incredibly happy with the work Jates did. IMO, the most important things from any contractor are 1) transparency, 2) hard work, and 3) easy to contact. The Jates team gets an A+ on all three. We will definitely use them again, for other work in our unit (and also for condo projects) You guys rock!! P.S. I attached a before/after picture below, so people can see just how great they did!! We love the result!

Over the years I've had Brad do a number of jobs, ranging from antique restoration to building custom pieces with beautiful inlay and special features; a music cabinet, bookshelves and a jewelry box. He is a fine artist and craftsman. Jude F.

Kevin repaired a broken downspout on our condo building. He was incredibly responsive, professional, and fantastic with follow-up from coming out to see the problem to getting us an estimate to doing the actual repair. He was also very conscientious about cost of the repairs, and attempted a fix that was as cost effective as possible before pursuing a more costly route. Kevin was called by a few other owners in our building to help with other repairs based on our positive experience as well. I would to hesitate to use his services for anything else we might need in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
