About
This class is taught by a woman for woman, specifically to learn to defend herself. Being a woman, the instructor is sensitive to the needs of her students and the issues which commonly bring other women to seek out such a class. She understands how intimidating and frightening such a class can seem, yet she is able to take a serious topic and bring levity and fun into the class. Students are able to walk out feeling confident, empowered, and successful. The program not only includes specific techniques based on the nine most common sexual assault scenarios, but also addresses how to prepare mentally and emotionally to resist an attack. The instructor, Marita Bower, is a second-degree black belt in Shorei Kai Karate, and a 2nd-degree blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Through the instructor's extensive work with criminal offenders, including sex offenders, she is able to give insight into factors that will make her students a less likely target for most any offense.

Marita is a wonderful provider. She was willing to come out to our Church group and volunteered to speak to them about Self-Defense for Senior Adults.

Marita jumped right in to the physical aspect of self defense, though a bit awkward at first, I must say it did give you some sense of what it would feel like if you really were attacked. By the time it was over, I felt like that physical "hands on" aspect of it was the best part! Much more useful & informative than sitting and listening to talk for a couple of hours! Got a lot out of it as did my 14 year daughter and friend. Looking forward to level 2!! Maryanne Doi

I have taken the level 1 and level 2 classes with Marita. I have learned numerous techniques to fight off an attacker. I was able to practice the techniques on an "attacker" and learned that I can do it. It was fun and educational. I would highly recommend the classes to any female but especially for girls in high school or college.

I liked the physical hands-on portion of the class. The techniques are easy to learn and execute. You leave the class feeling like you could defend yourself if you needed to. Great learning experience in a safe environment.

The class helped me so much to feel safer. Marita is a wonderful teacher and has so much experience and knowledge in preventing and surviving an attack. Her instruction is tough enough to help people push through their fears, but also compassionate enough to make you feel comfortable in for some a very uncomfortable situation. The skills I gained just from Phase I were amazing and the confidence I took away from it will be a shining light in my future. Thanks so much Marita!!!!!

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

Previously, I worked in the Criminal Justice field, first as a Prison Guard, then a Probation Officer, and a Director of a private work release facility. I was repeatedly in contact with sex offenders and witnessed their path of destruction. In order to learn to prevent future abuse, I obtained a Master's Degree in Social Work and provided treatment to sex offenders, their families, and victims of sexual abuse. Following the birth of my children, I decided to stay at home, but I missed being able to help others. I volunteered at an advocacy center for victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence. However, after earning my black belt in karate, I realized that I could "marry" all of my past experience and my new endevors to assist victims, and hopefully help prevent future victimizations by teaching women how to protect themselves. I attained the rank of 2nd Degree Black Belt in Karate in 2013, and I am a 2nd stripe blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
