We echo the same compliments as many others have done so. Paul was prompt, courteous, completed the project in a timely manner, and double-checked to make sure the new attic fan functioned properly. We will definitely rehire him as our needs occur, and heartily recommend his services to whomever may require electrical services.

I was selling my house which needed some minor repairs. I contacted Thumbtack. I was matched with several Contractors in my area. I chose Lakefront General Contractors & Cleaning Services, and l'm so happy I did. They came out and accessed what needed to be done. I was impressed by the professionalism and the caring nature of the gentleman that came. He was very concern and attentive to what I was explaining needed to be done. He did an excellent and outstanding job...he went above and beyond the call of duty! Very conscientious, and had a very good sense of humor to boot! He completed the job to perfection! I am so happy and pleased with the work that was done! I highly recommend them!!!!

I have employed Ben's service to clean my house for a few years. Usually a team of three or four cleaners arrive on time and are quite friendly. After 90-120 minutes the house is very clean and I feel great. I highly recommend Becht Cleaning Services.

Hollie and her team did a great job! They called to let us know they would be a few minutes late, but did end up being close to an hour late. However, they did an excellent job cleaning our home and were a great value for the price. We will definitely use Xtreme Cleaning Services again

LD Construction is who you should contact for all of your home repair needs! The owner, Luke Davis, does great work for a very affordable price. I had door frames, doors, shelves, and drawers that all needed to be repaired in a short period of time. Luke was at my house the day after I called him. He gives free estimates and also gives you pricing options depending on how much money you are looking to spend on a project. LD Construction does great work, and I could not recommend them enough for your home improvement needs!

I was searching for someone to clean my gutters and needed someone immediately. It’s a Saturday afternoon and Nathan took the time to fit me in his schedule. He gave me a price for the gutter maintenance and found that it wasn’t as bad as I had thought. He offered a discounted price or for the same amount quoted he would mow my lawn. I am completely happy with his work and the quality. He is fair in his pricing and recommend CASE HOME SERVICES for you home care need. Thanks Nathan.

Don sold our home in less than a week! The key for our quick sale was his expertise in the real estate field. He has been serving the Indianapolis area as a realtor for many years and that was definitely apparent as he helped us navigate the world of real estate and prepare our home for the market. He was thorough in walking through our home with us to give practical advice on what we needed to ...do to put the house on the market and sell quickly! He also made it easy for us to complete needed cleaning/repairs/maintenance with his many professional contacts for the specific tasks. He helped us receive TOP DOLLAR for our home based on market value and we SOLD to our VERY FIRST showing, with multiple offers coming in. Don was very personable and attentive. We felt like we were his only client by the way he always quickly responded to us and spent time with us, even being "hands on" to complete some needed projects in our home. Don also helped us purchase our new home. We felt confident because of his knowledge of the real estate market. We trusted him to help us get a fair deal and price for our home, and we sure did! We would not have considered selling and purchasing a new home without him!

I was so impressed with Travis that I hired him to do a major remodel of our home and to add an addition to it as well. . We can't express how pleased we have been with Travis and his team. Top quality work. Professional Service. Fair Price. My wife and I are very satisfied with Monroe Builders and will use them again in the future. Hostetler Construction built a very beautiful fence for my house. They took the time to listen to my questions and ideas and helped me make the right decisions to build the perfect fence for our house. TRUE STORY - 2 weeks after the fence was installed, our house was hit by a tornado. The fence stayed in place and had no damage. Every piece of wood was in place and nothing was loose or falling off. It was as if the fence had a force field around it. Our house on the other hand suffered over 10 grand of damage. Based on that event, I would recommend Hostetler for any job just on that experience alone. His work is high quality and tornado proof.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a property management company do?

Property management companies manage the rental of residential homes, apartments, condos, commercial spaces and retail spaces. Property managers can oversee just a single unit or many properties, whether those sites are inhabited full-time or are vacation rentals. A property management company helps a property owner or landlord find tenants; collects rent; takes care of accounting, property maintenance and repairs; handles on-site management; and manages vacation rental check-in and checkout tasks. Although many property owners or landlords successfully manage their own rental real estate, a property management company can help you handle tenant issues and maintenance problems, especially if you are not located in the same city or state. Most property management companies deal with tenants directly, and their tasks include:

  • Marketing the rental property
  • Collecting rent
  • Handling repair problems
  • Responding to tenant complaints
  • Evicting tenants

A property management company may be a good choice for property owners who have several investment properties, live far away from the rental property, or don’t have time for hands-on management.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Why is property management important?

A property management company can be a landlord’s greatest asset. As a neutral third party, the property manager handles the day-to-day operations of a real estate investment, from a single vacation home to a large apartment building or several rental properties. A property management company can be especially helpful to landlords who own several units and can’t manage each of them individually, or those who live too far from their investment properties to meet with renters and oversee maintenance. Property management is particularly important if your rentals are part of an affordable housing program. To receive financial assistance from the government, the landlord must comply with a complicated set of rules; property management companies should have both experience and expertise in complying with the rules specific to each housing program.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
