I hired him because his profile was easily visible and he has good reviews from several people. Plus when I asked for the quote he knew exactly why I needed a contractor, which made me feel confident that he can get the work done. We are selling our home and the buyers needed some work done based on the inspection report. Paul came on time and did a fantastic job. He went above and beyond what other contractors did by taking before and after pictures for me to send to the other buyers. He is also really nice and professional and the price is reasonable. I gave his business cards to my realtor to refer him to other clients since my realtor was looking for good reliable (and Paul is a certified electrician) contractors to work with.

A team came out to perform a one-time maintenance clean, which I'd made clear to management was an opportunity to earn our recurring business. The team members were very nice and friendly. In general, the quality of the cleaning was good without being great, but add in a couple of big misses (an entire bedroom was not vacuumed, a large buffet not dusted) and the overall result did not make the first impression we'd have needed to sign on for a regular cleaning service with Becht. I might consider using them again if in a bind, as they were able to get me in on short notice during a busy time of year, but I'd feel obligated to QC the whole job before they left.

Ron has completed several projects for me both personally and as a General Contractor over the past 15 years. In a world where integrity is a man's biggest asset, Ron should be considered a leader. When I hire somebody to execute a project no matter large or small, I want people who have high integrity, who are dependable, who pay close attention to detail and return to rectify any mistakes. I would recommend Ron to friends, family and anyone in need of getting a project done right!

James Prather called to confirm, showed up on time, completed the job to perfection, and was very professional. We were on a tight time frame in selling our home and needed the work completed in order to close. He fit us in the next day and stayed until dark to make sure it was done correctly. We would recommend him because he was an honest, hard-working, and fair contractor.

Dustin was excellent. I talked to him at 7:30pm on a Sunday to discuss a plumbing issue that we had. He came out first thing the next day to fix our problem. He was professional and explained our situation to us as well as the pricing before doing anything. He was in and out in an hour and a half and even took a look around the house to give us a list for our landlord of other things that needed to be fixed. We have never had a better experience with a plumber or contractor. I would highly recommend calling Dustin to anyone needing plumbing help.

Seth Perkins did a wonderful job replacing all my baseboards in the house and repairing a large hole in my wall! He was prompt to come out for the estimate and on the day of installation. He also made quick work of it and finished in no time (unlike some other contractors). I will definitely be using him for any future projects and highly recommend him to friends, family, and anyone else looking for repairs. Thank you!!

Sean remodeled 2 bathrooms and a kitchen in a rental I wanted to put on the market. Everything turned out beautifully and really updated the home. The house sold at asking price in less than two weeks! I then had him convert an upstairs loft to a fourth bedroom in another rental and he finished a wasted attic space into an office or game room. He did great work, kept the job on schedule and made sure everything was to my satisfaction. I am thrilled to have found a contractor that takes care of all the details without having to do anything myself!

Our experience with Personal Touch Painting has been amazing! We decided to have our front livingroom painted, as we do about every three years. We have used different contractors before in the past, but this company had incredible reviews so before even meeting them I knew I would not be disappointed. They were on time for our first face to room meeting, and within 20 mins we had scheduled for the work to begin within two days with the scheduled completion of one 8 hour day. Keep in mind the room we had painted is the busiest, most visited room in the house at all times with the most furniture. Day of work again began with punctuality with Wesley and Justin arriving ready with all materials, and professionalism. I have never seen a painter previously care about the preservation of his clients belongings as Wesley did. These guys are the real deal!! Wesley recommended using BreakThrough paint by PPG, and honestly my room has never looked so good. Clean cut lines, vibrant color, and it really gives the room a brand new feel. Wesley and Justin put everything back in place, cleaned up work area and finished ahead of schedule by 3 hours. We were beyond impressed and have already scheduled for them to do additional work on our home. I will only recommend Personal Touch Painting moving forward.

Nate responded quickly and started the work requested in a prompt manner. He was extremely friendly with my family and we enjoyed having him around. We had a contractor on hand for another job and he was flexible and worked around the other project. He was very helpful and took on other projects we added on with enthusiasm. Altogether he powerwashed and painted a garage door, power washed siding and deck, installed a storm door and did deck staining for us. We will be calling him again.

Roman was the lead contractor for our full home renovation. Inside and out, top to bottom remodel. This project was complicated and not lacking in obstacles. Roman was organized and met deadlines, communicated promptly and efficiently, and his personal work along with that of his crew showed experience and close attention to detail. He was very helpful in explaining our options to us as things came up during the project and always shot us straight, not a doubt in my mind I can trust everything he says. We are so greatful to have found Roman and for the work he did for us. He will be a future go to for whatever we need and we strongly recommend him to anybody and everybody.

I had Thad install an exterior door for me... he got it done quickly in the time frame I had hoped for. He made it very easy to work with him... I simply bought a door at Menards, he picked it up and installed it for me a couple days later. Trustworthiness is the most important to me in finding a contractor... I found Thad to be honest and very trustworthy. I would definitely recommend.

Balmer Restoration came out to give me an estimate right away. I'm selling my home and the buyer requested a new roof. Chris helped me determine that there was still life left in the roof and that a new roof wasn't needed at the time. He helped explain why my insurance didn't cover hail damage in the past too. He also told me the pros and cons of trying to repair my roof versus doing a new install. His expertise showed and he even provided written documentation to help rebuff the buyer. Balmer Restoration is a contractor that you can trust!

I would highly recommend Integrity D & R for any project. Our project included painting, installation of hardwood and tile floors. Shelli (owner/designer) was there every step of the way. We experienced a problem with the quality of the hardwood floor. After many inspections the manufacturer was reluctant to accept any responsibility. Shelli continued to work with suppliers and sub-contractors and our defective floor was replaced at no cost to us. Integrity stood behind the work and we have nothing but the highest praise for Shelli and the people who work with her. We've had nothing but compliments on the beauty and elegance of our home since our project was finished.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
