“Baseboards aren't just decorative — they may also hide the natural settling and uneven edges of walls and flooring. Professional installation typically helps mask imperfections, creating a cleaner, smoother look overall.“

Sherrie A. says, "What. great experience I had when I contacted Joe Stapleton to replace two bi-fold doors in my bedroom. I originally contacted Lowes to purchase and install the doors in my bedroom, however, when the quote of $695 was presented to me I thought otherwise and reached to Thumbtack and Joe. From my first contact Joe responded quickly, set up a date and time to look at my project, arrived on time, explained what would need to be done and how must it would cost, $150 to install two doors. He also noticed I had another bi-fold door that needed to be replaced and let me know he could include this in the $150 price. Once my doors were delivered from Lowes's I contacted Joe, we set up a date and time for him, however that date had to be rescheduled not because of Joe but because it had snowed and the roads were to slippery. A few days later on a Sunday, Joe arrived and installed my new doors which look lovely. It took him about an hour, he brought his own tools, and left the area were he was working neat and tidy. I would recommend Joe to everyone, he also does all repairs with the exception of HVAC. I look to have him return soon to replace a ceiling fan in my dining room with a ceiling light!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Carpenters, handymen, and flooring contractors are the pros who typically install baseboards. Painters also frequently offer this service, especially when it's part of a larger room painting project. The right professional for you can depend on the size and complexity of your job.

When looking for a professional to install baseboards, make sure you complete the following steps:

  • Verify their license and insurance: A professional should have general liability insurance. Depending on the project scope, they may also need a contractor's or carpenter's license. These requirements vary by region, so it’s a good idea to check your local regulations.

  • Get several estimates: A detailed estimate should break down the costs for materials, labor, and any additional tasks like painting or old baseboard removal. It should also provide a clear project timeline.

  • Read their reviews: Look for comments about their attention to detail, especially regarding mitered corners and clean caulk lines. Red flags include mentions of damage to walls, messy job sites, or poor communication.

  • Look at their portfolios: Pay close attention to photos of their finished work. Look for clean, tight corners and seamless joints. The baseboards should sit flush against both the wall and the floor with no visible gaps.

  • Find out if they have warranties: Ask about a workmanship guarantee to cover any issues that come up after the installation, such as joints separating or caulk failing, due to the quality of the work.

  • Ask important questions: Will you handle purchasing and transporting the materials? Does your quote include painting, caulking, and cleanup?

There are several factors that might impact the cost of this project, including:

  • Material choice: The type of baseboard you choose plays a big role. Materials like MDF are typically more affordable, while hardwoods like oak or maple will cost more.

  • Project size: The cost will depend on the total linear feet of baseboard you need installed. Larger spaces or an entire home will naturally require more materials and labor than a single room.

  • Removal of old baseboards: If you have existing baseboards that need to be carefully removed and disposed of, this can add labor time and increase the cost of the job.

  • Complexity of the layout: A room with simple, straight walls is faster to work in. Spaces with many corners, curved walls, or staircases require more precise cuts and fitting, which can increase labor costs.

  • Finishing work: Unfinished baseboards need to be painted or stained. This service, along with caulking gaps and filling nail holes for a seamless look, will increase the final price.

Here are some cost-saving tips:

  • Do some of the prep work yourself. You can often cut labor costs by removing the old baseboards and clearing the room of furniture before your installer arrives.

  • Choose a budget-friendly material. Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is typically more affordable than solid wood.

  • Bundle your installation with other projects. If you also need crown molding or window trim installed, hiring a pro to do it all at once may be more cost-effective than booking separate jobs.

  • Get several quotes before hiring. Comparing estimates from at least three different professionals helps you understand the typical price range and find the best value.

  • Handle the painting on your own. You can cut down on labor hours by painting or staining the new baseboards yourself, either before or after they're installed.

Baseboard installation is a job best left to the pros — here's why:

  • You'll likely save a lot of time and avoid the frustration of a complex DIY project. Pros usually have specialized saws to make precise miter and cope cuts, ensuring your corners fit together perfectly.

  • They also have other tools for the job, such as a nail gun and miter saw, which can guarantees a secure and even installation.

  • Many pros also know how to scribe baseboards to fit against uneven floors or wavy walls for a seamless look.

  • Experienced pros often provide a clean, finished look by expertly caulking gaps and filling nail holes.

During your pro’s visit, you can expect them to start by confirming the project details and taking precise measurements. They’ll then cut the baseboard material to fit your walls with clean, tight corners. After securing the new baseboards, your pro will typically fill the nail holes and caulk the seams to create a smooth, finished appearance before cleaning up their work area.

Typically, it will take a professional a few hours to a couple of days to install baseboards. The total time depends on a few factors. For example:

  • Project size: The total square footage and number of rooms needing baseboards will directly affect the project timeline.

  • Room complexity: Rooms with many corners, curves, or built-in furniture require more time-intensive precise cuts.

  • Old baseboard removal: Removing existing baseboards and prepping the walls for the new ones adds time to the job.

  • Wall condition: Crooked or damaged walls may need repairs before the new baseboards can be installed.

  • Finishing work: Finishing touches like caulking gaps, filling nail holes, and painting will also add labor hours.

Remember: The timeline for your project will vary depending on many factors. Always ask your pro to provide an estimate.
