“Blown-in insulation can make your home more comfortable by evening out temperatures, dampening noise, and helping control pests. It's generally budget-friendly, may lower energy bills, and is typically quicker and cleaner than traditional insulation methods.“

Edward Bell says, "I just received an annual inspection of my home's basement by a tall, slender technician (Chris M.), who tightened up the metal struts (beams) that were installed several years ago. Chris, turned out to be very knowledgeable for a tech who has only been with OBA for a little less than 2 years. He answered every question I had and offered advice for the future and assured me that another property I own, should I require service, he or his colleagues would be more than happy to offer assistance with that basement. This young man was exceptional and was the epitome of great customer service and I should know. As a co-author for The Customer Service Specialist Study Guide, used by the Electronic Technician's Association (ETA), in order to earn the coveted CSS designation, a candidate must complete our study guide. I know good customer service and Chris M., is an example of what people who deal with the public should expect. I don't know what his career mindset is, but if I were the management at Ground Works (Ohio Basement Authority), I would definitely put this young man in for a raise and have him be the face of service for others in his field. Thank you, Ohio Basement Authority for all the work you have accomplished in my home and I cannot think of any other company I would use for my basement or the basement of my late wife's home (that I now own)! As I have, over the years, I will continue to recommend Ohio Basement Authority (Ground Works), to anyone who has a need for basement or foundation repairs, inspection and in general, those issues an owner would have concerns with. I might add, once you hire OBA, you will find their pricing better than competitive."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

These steps will help you find a professional to install blown-in insulation:

  • Verify their license and insurance: An insulation contractor may need a specific license, and they should always carry general liability and worker's compensation insurance. Requirements vary by region.

  • Get several estimates: To compare apples to apples, ask for detailed quotes from a few different blown insulation contractors. A proper estimate should include the insulation type and R-value, total area, labor costs, and any prep work like air sealing.

  • Read their reviews: Look for comments about professionalism, thorough cleanup, and improved home comfort. Red flags include complaints about messy work, inconsistent insulation depth, or property damage.

  • Look at their portfolios: Past project photos should show insulation that is evenly distributed and at a consistent depth. The work area should look clean and protected.

  • Find out if they have warranties: Ask about warranties on both the workmanship and the insulation material itself. A good contractor will stand by their work.

  • Ask important questions: Before hiring, ask if they perform air sealing, what their cleanup process is, and what R-value they recommend for your space.

There are several factors that might impact the cost of blown-in insultation, including:

  • The size of the area: The total square footage of the space you’re insulating, such as an attic or walls, is a primary cost driver.

  • Type of insulation: The material you choose — like cellulose, fiberglass, or rock wool — can have different price points.

  • Labor and accessibility: The complexity of the job, including how easy it is to access the space, and the rates charged by different blown insulation contractors will affect the final price.

  • Old insulation removal: If you have old or damaged insulation that needs to be removed before the new material is installed, this will add to the project cost.

  • Desired R-value: The level of thermal resistance (R-value) you want to achieve can also play a role, as a higher R-value often requires more insulation material.

Typically, it will take a few hours to a full day for a professional to complete blown in insulation installation. There are a few factors that may impact how long it takes. For example:

  • Size of the space: The square footage of your attic or walls is the biggest determinant of the project's length.

  • Accessibility: Hard-to-reach areas like tight crawlspaces or attics with limited access can add time to the job.

  • Old insulation removal: If old or damaged insulation needs to be removed first, this will significantly extend the project timeline.

  • Obstructions: Pros may need to work carefully around obstacles like ductwork, wiring, or stored items in the space.

  • Insulation depth: Achieving a higher R-value requires installing a deeper layer of insulation, which takes more time.

Remember: The timeline for your project will vary depending on many factors. Always ask your pro to provide an estimate.

Take these steps before your pro arrives to install blown-in insulation to ensure a safe and efficient appointment:

  1. Clear the work area. You'll need to remove any furniture, boxes, or personal items from the attic and the areas leading to it so the crew has easy access.

  2. Protect your home from dust. Cover furniture and flooring near the access point with plastic sheeting, as the installation process can create some dust.

  3. Point out potential hazards. Show your pro the location of any recessed lights, exhaust fans, or attic vents so they can work around them safely.

  4. Create a clear path for equipment. The crew will run a large hose from their truck into your home, so make sure the path is free of obstacles.

  5. Keep pets and children away. For everyone's safety, it's best to secure pets and keep children out of the work area until the job is complete.

During your pro’s visit, you may expect them to begin by preparing the area, which includes sealing air leaks and protecting your floors and furniture. They will then use a large hose connected to a blowing machine to fill your attic or wall cavities with insulation material to the correct depth. This is a process that most professional blown-in insulation contractors can finish within a few hours, and they’ll clean up the work area before they leave.
