I highly recommend EBRR and team to everyone. The team was always professional and on time. Ed Bilo takes great pride in his company and it is obvious he enjoys his work. The team was always sure to make certain the finished product was exactly what we wanted. EBRR is a one-stop shop- they are skilled in so many areas of property maintenance. We had them do flooring, outdoor landscaping, post construction cleaning and concrete repair. Ed Bilo was happy to help with whatever type of work we needed done around the house and provide ideas and expertise. We will be inviting them back to do future projects in our home without hesitation.

I was referred to Thumbtack by a co-worker after describing I had purchased the tile materials to re-tile a stand-up shower and a shower/tub combo. Matt was one of 5 contractors who responded within hours after my post and I was impressed with his credentials, pictures of jobs completed, and reviews. He met with me within 48, and we realized he had completed the tile floor work in my house for the previous owners nearly 5 years ago! The tile floor was a big selling feature for me back then and I was pleased when Matt could do the work I requested, for a very reasonable price, and he was able to start within a few days. Matt is prompt, meticulous, courteous, and was patient to answer my questions, and to do the work well and not rush to just finish

We absolutely loved working with José and his team to tile our basement floor with ceramic wood-looking tile, expose a brick wall, and install new toilet and a wall-mounted sink. He works FAST and within budget. Extra things we needed done were added at very reasonable extra expense ($40-60 to repair an unexpected drywall hole behind a mirror). His team does beautiful work, and José made sure every bit of trash or demo material was taken away. They also went above and beyond to make things look nice. For example, I don't think they charged me extra when they plastered around our baseboards and it looks soooo much better! They also patched a little hole left by a past electrician's job. They took extra good care of our space as if it was their own home. We also like that he respected our desire to further finish our space ourselves ( we are ok with doing our own painting). I can't say enough good things. We will definitely hire José and Brandon Contracting for our next job.

Antonio did an excellent job and I would highly recommend. I was looking to replace all my hardwood floors and carpet in my home. He showed me a variety of different options and price points. I selected 2 great looking samples he had and when it came time for the job he professionally took out all the old flooring and put in the new In less than 2 days. His communication and follow up were spot on and in the end It looked amazing and I was highly satisfied. His price points were Very competitive and I and was able to meet the budget I was looking for. I needed a contractor to do some drywall work and he gave me a referral that I ended up using as well. I would definitely recommend.

Carlos, Arrived during the timeslot he set up with me, and he got right to work. It took him about 2 1/2 hours powereash a 16 x 16 deck. He is a very contentious worker, which is really good since my husband is a very particular person. We would hire him again.

I was delighted by my experience working with Ordonez. He installed a marble backsplash in my kitchen. His price was competitive but it was his conscientiousness, thoroughness, and commitment to excellence that impressed me the most. I’ve worked with many home contractors, and this is one of the best. Fully recommend!

I hired Nilto to "finish" a room in my basement which we were turning into a gym. He framed half of a wall, hung drywall on two of the walls and the ceiling, installed an outlet, built a small custom railing, painted the drywall, and installed rubber flooring. Nilto took time to discuss the project and make recommendations based on his expertise. He even came back to our house to discuss the project with my wife and ensure she was comfortable with the plan. The project took a few days longer than expected (mostly due to uncontrollable things like drying plaster...etc) but was still finished in a reasonable timeframe. I had to point out a number of things that needed to be fixed (small things like some screws were sticking out, a few anchors in our concrete walls needed to be removed, the baseboards were a bit crooked), but Nilto took care of them quickly and send pictures to me throughout the project to be sure I was happy prior to returning home from work for the day. Overall, the price was excellent and at that price, I am very happy with the work Nilto did.

Everything about A and B was top notch. Francisco was fantastic with call responsiveness, getting answers to me quickly and coming when and where he said he was going to. His crew of guys did an amazing job prepping my concrete floor (commercial project) from the demo. It was like glass by the time they skim coated and repaired all the cracks. The transitions from vinyl to carpet is flawless. The price was more than reasonable as well. You can probably find a "contractor" to beat their (and probably anyone's) price but you get what you pay for. They weren't even the most expensive either. They were the middle guy and boy am I glad I went with the middle guy. Thank you so much Francisco! I can't recommend you enough.

Wilson did a fantastic job of building a frame and installing a bamboo fence in our yard. He was flexible and reacted positively to changes in the job conditions as they evolved. He finished the job in record time with very high quality. Wilson is patient, knowledgeable, and respectful of time (which most contractors are not) which we valued enormously. I absolutely recommend him for fencing, deck building, and other yard building work.

Ford and crew were very responsive and did a wonderful job on refinishing our floor for a reasonable price. We had a bit of a miscommunication that left us waiting around a while for the initial estimate, but otherwise they were fairly prompt. I appreciated his willingness to respond to my questions over Thumbtack (particularly in comparison to others floor people on here) and via text message as well as on the phone. The previous owners of our home had painted over some wires tacked onto the baseboards and the paint was cracking and ripping as they were removing the shoe molding to do the work on the floor. Ford offered to come back and install the shoe molding for us after we've had time to repaint the molding that was damaged by the methods of the previous owners, which I appreciated. We were on a tight timeline trying to get the floors done between closing on the house and moving in and Modern Floors was able to accommodate our schedule and work with us to get it done when we needed it to be done. The finished product looks beautiful and they did a great job matching the color of the engineered hardwood floor we have on the main floor. The only cons to our experience was the lateness to the initial estimate appointment and it would have been nice to get an email copy of the estimate. I would not hesitate to recommend them to a friend!

Learned about Curtis' company through work he did for a neighbor who was extremely satisfied with his work. They allowed us to see the work he'd done on their master bath and it looked great. We had our townhouse kitchen renovated by them. Curtis provided a very comprehensive estimate which detailed some items we hadn't considered such as daily clean-up, the payment schedule, and how receipts would be handled for materials purchases. His estimate came in at the middle of 4 estimates we received for tear-down of the original kitchen, new cabinet installation, tile floors and backsplash with some electrical and plumbing thrown in. He was able to accommodate an earlier start date when the cabinets we ordered were available earlier then expected by 2 weeks. He and his 2 assistants worked efficiently and more importantly they took care when doing the demo (and throughout the project) to protect the hallway floors and other areas of the house from dust, dirt and debris. They worked very efficiently and by the end of the 2nd day were starting on laying the tile floor. Cabinet installation went smoothly and he was kind enough to point out a couple items which we needed to report back to the cabinet makers regarding some bowing. Overall the project took approximately 9 business days from start to finish with a few small visits to finish up hardware, trim and reinstallation of the dishwasher once the counters and sink folks (separate company) finished their piece. His 2 assistants were equally pleasant and made us feel comfortable so we could ask questions as needed. We plan to use Curtis' company Oddjobs.pro again for upcoming bathroom renovations and some other work we need done.

Remberto and his team were phenomenal! They came in and tore up the horrible job the first contractor did on the floor, and made it look perfect. I also had him do some other items in the basement remodel, that the previous contractor walked away from. This included porcelain tile with an inlay in a shower. My wife and I were blown away with the quality of his work. They removed all trash immediately, and kept the work area as clean as possible. Not like the previous contractor that left trash everywhere, including all of their food containers. I would definitely use RB Contractors again, and have been recommending them to everyone that asks.

I needed my subfloor replaced in my diningroom due to my dogs forgetting how to use the bathroom outside. Almost immediately after I posted my repair need, Peter contacted me. He was able to come out the same day to give me an estimate. And, he not only was extremely thorough in checking out the repair I needed, but also candidate in his recommendations on what he could do and very knowledgeable, which I greatly appreciated and made me sure he was the right person for the job. I received his estimate (which was extremely reasonable) the next day and he had his crews out the very next day, which was unbelievable with it being the Friday before Memorial Day weekend. Peter's Floor's crews were absolutely fantastic! They showed up in the morning and immediately got to work. And had my entire subfloor replaced in 3 hours!!! They were extremely professional, courteous, and took extra care in making sure everything was done just right. They even cleaned up everything before they left, leaving me with a nice new subfloor of much better quality than what I had previously. I will be hiring Peter's Floors for more flooring work I have planned in the future.

Dennis is the first contractor I have worked with that actually called me back. He is very prompt and very professional. His crew was very respectful of my property and cleaned up the job site at the end of each day. Eugene is one of the best carpenters I have had the pleasure to work with and the deck he built for us is the envy of the neighborhood.

I had Baiza Construction replace the floor and wall tile in each of our 3 bathrooms a year ago. I waited this long to submit a review just to be sure everything held up nicely. They also did all the plumbing to replace the shower fixtures. Honestly, all I have is good things to say about their crew. First, the price was very fair. Second, he said it would take 5 or 6 full days to finish, and it took them 5 days and just a few hours on the 6th day. The tile work came out perfect. Every day, the guys checked with me to verify any ideas I had, including what pattern I wanted, or exactly how high I wanted the fixtures. They were sure to keep a clean area throughout, and never left a mess overnight. Anyway, I'm very happy with the work that was done, and I would definitely hire them again, and have recommended them to others.

I hired Antonio, of Renaissance Restoration, to do several projects. They included: 1) rebuilding the curb in my shower that was installed improperly by a different contractor; 2) Finishing a half-bath remodel that included refinishing and painting the drywall after they had be damaged from wallpaper removal, installing a vanity including plumbing and trim; 3) Repairing water-damaged hardwood floors and refinishing hardwood floors in the kitchen, dining room, bathroom, hall and stairway; 4) Expanding the kitchen entrance by 2 inches, repairing and refinishing the drywall and wood floor. I was at first skeptical to hire one person to complete all these tasks due to the variety of skills required. Fortunately, Antonio had all the skills necessary to complete the job expertly and timely. His attention to detail and vast experience with carpentry and contracting work in general proved to be invaluable. The end result of each project was even better than I had expected. Needless to say I would hire Antonio again for my next project.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
