Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs that could be similar to fixing a hole in the wall:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

However, you should request cost estimates from drywall repair specialists in your area to figure out how much it will cost you to fix your hole.

What tools do you need to repair drywall?

To repair drywall, you need up to several tools and materials. For example, you may need a drill to insert drywall screws and boreholes. A drywall saw or utility knife is perfect for cutting and shaping drywall, and don’t forget your tape measure and pencil. Drywall and taping knives are also essential.

For materials, you’ll likely need construction adhesive, drywall tape, drywall screws, masking tape and joint compound.

If you don’t have these tools — and you don’t want to spend money on them — contact a drywall repair professional instead of doing it yourself.

Do drywall contractors need a license?

Pros may need to obtain a license to fix and install drywall. It’s always worth checking with your local government about whether a drywall company or contractor has to be licensed before they work on your project.

Who do I hire to install or repair drywall?

A general contractor, handyman or a drywall contractor (or company) can usually install and repair drywall. It’s recommended that you call one of these types of pros when your drywall needs to be repaired, such as after a plumber or electrician has completed their work.

Look up local pros online and compare their profiles, paying extra attention to their ratings, reviews, experience and list of services. Contact three to five pros to get cost estimates for your project.

Do drywall contractors do insulation?

A drywall contractor focuses on drywall. If you want to install insulation (or upgrade your existing installation), you should hire an insulation contractor. It's possible that your drywall contractor may be able to offer basic insulation services, but for more advanced insulation installation (such as spray foam), go with a professional who specializes in this.

How do I find a good drywall contractor?

The best way to find a good drywall contractor is by searching for the top-rated contractors near you on Thumbtack. View their ratings, and read their reviews to see how they did on past drywall projects. Pay attention to the photos uploaded by the customers and contractors, so you can analyze their quality of work.

After you found a few contractors you like, ask them for price quotes. For more tips on how to hire contractors, read our in-depth guide.

I hired Mark to repair a hole in our master bedroom ceiling that had been cut out to repair a leak. He is the consummate professional. He was prompt, is a perfectionist (which I like), and the price was right. I’ve had a lot of drywall work done over the years, but never this quality. I highly recommend!

My Mother hired Justin for what she thought would be a drywall repair. She actually needed drywall replacement. My Mother’s home was the same house she was raised in as well as myself and siblings. The home has welcomed five (5) generations. Justin was very professional, gave excellent advice while serving the needs of my Mother. The job was completed as specified, cost was very reasonable and we are able can move to the next step of the kitchen remodel.

Austin is awesome! He always shows up on time and sticks to the price he quoted. His work is exceptional… We had him patch and repair drywall in small spots at two different homes. The patchwork and the paint was flawless! We will definitely be hiring Austin again for future projects.

I had 4 separate areas in my home that needed repair due to water damage. One was a pretty extensive drywall job, and the others were plaster repair (including a spot on the ceiling). Ron was quick to respond, provided an in-person quote within one day, and the job was complete by the end of the week. He was professional, stuck to his estimate even after it took a little longer and required more material than originally anticipated, and did a fantastic job. I will definitely hire him again!

I had initially hired a handyman to do some work around our new house, and there was some drywall that was stained from an old leak. Our handyman tried to repair it, but ran into some issues getting it flush on the ceiling. While he knew drywall, he was not an expert. In comes Mike with MVM Construction, and he was able to swing by, take a look, give me a reasonable quote, and had guys there by that afternoon since I was hoping to get it done before move in! Whatever issue our handyman ran into was no problem for Mike's guys. They quickly patched things up, and it looked beautiful. As they were doing the work they made some marks on the wall, so while the drywall mud was drying, they took a trip to the store, got a perfect match on the paint color for the wall, and fixed that, too! That gave them the time to put on the second coat of mud, get the ceiling painted, and you'd never know the drywall was cut out. Very impressive work. The quote was a little higher than others I had received, but it was worth every penny.

I would highly recommend Dawa. The quality of his work is top notch! We needed drywall repair and painting for several rooms (including a kitchen that required fine detail work) and baseboard replacement and painting as well. He works quickly and efficiently, with great attention to detail. On top of all this, he’s also a really nice person! If you’re looking for high quality workmanship, hire Sherpa Painter.

Couldn't be happier. He replied within 20 minutes and came out within two days. Unrivaled professionalism. I felt so comfortable with him in my home that I left twice. Fantastic quality work repairing 4 large observation holes in my drywall, and he went above and beyond ensuring I was happy with the final product, even offering to paint free of charge some adjacent baseboard that he noticed had been repaired poorly by the previous owners. I let him know as he was leaving that it's rare to find a professional you trust in your home and with any repairs you need. Embodies the honest-work, small business owner mindset. Resounding recommendation.

Paragon painting helped us out with finishing a bathroom reno that we started working on a couple months ago! We needed help with a ceiling that had begun peeling as well as some drywall repair and patching. They came and did everything within our budget! These guys have years of experience and because of that were able to finish the project very fast! Don’t waste your time getting quotes from anyone else!

Job description: We had a five-inch gouge in drywall in a high-traffic area. PROS 1) Very responsive, before, during and after the project. 2) On time/early on the days of the project. 3) The hole was ultimately repaired well, and debris was contained/removed. CONS 1) The estimate was on the pricier side of the ones we fielded. 2) It seemed like a pretty straightforward job, but it needed three attempts over two days to get it done. One had visible lines from the patch, and the second wasn't given sufficient time to dry before painting, leading to bubbling. To their credit, the job was completed sufficiently on the third attempt. However, it took eight hours over two days instead of four hours over one as originally estimated. We appreciated the communication throughout the process and the opportunity to review the handiwork, but it could've gone smoother.
