Planning ahead

Things to know before you get started.
7 Steps to Hiring a General Contractor
  1. 1. Determine what needs remodeling

Include plumbing, flooring, roofing, lighting, and landscaping. You can prioritize the areas that need minor remodeling.

  2. 2. Create a rough budget

Make certain that the actual cost falls within a reasonable range. It should be flexible enough to accommodate any additional recommendations from your contractor.

  3. 3. Shortlist potential contractors

Because you need a general contractor, confirm that the company has contacts with plumbers, roofers, electricians, and other subcontractors.

  4. 4. Discuss the project details

Address any concerns and questions before the project starts. This helps confirm the correct project measurements before purchasing the required supplies.

  5. 5. Ask for a final quote

He or she should provide a detailed account of how the funds will be allocated. Compare quotes from at least three potential contractors.

  6. 6. Understand the contract

Only sign when you are sure of the details. The important areas it should explicitly pronounce include dispute resolution, warranty, payment, start/end dates, cleanup and penalties.

  7. 7. Finalize the arrangements

Create enough storage space for the remodeling supplies. Choose a convenient location to allow for easy cleanup after the project.
