The shelter in place has really put the focus on all of the projects at the house that need to taken care of. We kept hearing noises coming from the attic at night but wasn't sure what it was. The noises stopped and we figured that the problem went away only to realize that it had returned. Then we found rodent droppings under the sink which was totally gross, we realized that it was rats making their way into our kitchen. We knew then that we had to get rid of them and right away. We called a few pest control companies but they couldn't get someone out to remove the rats until later in the week. We decided to give Presto a try hoping they would be fast. I called them and they had someone come out to our home within an 1 hour. I didn't mind paying for the inpsection fee because it was deducted from the total cost of the serice. They pointed out all of the places around the house that the rats were able to access into the home. They provided me with a quote to repair them and begin to trap the rats in the attic. We didn't realize that the bird seed that we had in the backyard was a feeding source for the rats until it was pointed out to us. It was recommended that we also install bait around the house since we had a creek and open field next door. I was hesitant because I have little ones and animals not wanting them to be exposed to chemicals. They explained the rat poison they use is multifeeding which is less toxic and that everything was approved for use in California. I'm so glad we had chosen Presto because our rat problem is gone! We found one dead rat under a log in the backyard but it was explained there were more rats dead becuase all the bait was gone indicating there were a lot. We no longer hear any noises in the attic and we make sure that the bird feeder does not spill the seed onto the ground. They solved our problem so fast and explained everything that they would be doing ahead of time. I would highly recommend them to anyone who wants their problem gone for good and fast. AmySee more

We have some pesky critters digging up our yard leaving mounds all over. Read up about it online (as you do) and tried traps and repellants of various types with no results. So, I called the experts. Holy moly. These folks know their stuff. Pulled out half a dozen gophers and moles within a week and just came back this week to remove a few more this 2019 season. Dani was really courteous and let me watch him at work, explaining everything as he went along. Showing me where the runs went, which mounds were associated with other ones, which were new, what was likely to be a different critter from others. There is so much accumulated experience and knowledge in this team - they do an awesome job and I'm glad I trust them to keep our yard free of plant destroying vermin. Just awesome.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an exterminator during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Ask exterminators in your area if they would be willing to offer a consultation over a phone call or video chat. You can then ask them any questions you have about the upcoming appointment. Make sure to ask what precautions they are taking to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and whether they are observing social distancing guidelines. You may ask them if it's possible to conduct the appointment virtually or without person-to-person contact.

How can I find out if an exterminator is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Essential service providers during the COVID-19 crisis are defined by individual states, cities and localities. For the most accurate information, visit your official state or city government website to see what is considered an essential service.

CISA is the government agency that defines critical workers on a national level, so you can check its website for more information. However, note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an exterminator when social distancing?

If you need pest extermination services inside your home, talk to the exterminator first to be sure that you both feel comfortable completing the project. Also, follow the CDC’s guidelines on social distancing. You can also arrange with the exterminator to take extra steps to stay safe, such as waving instead of shaking hands, staying at least 6 feet apart, using digital payments and sanitizing any common spaces before and after the project is complete.

Does an exterminator need to enter my home?

If you have an outdoor pest infestation, it’s unlikely an exterminator will need to enter your home. But if your pest infestation is inside your home, the exterminator will likely need to enter your home. Check with the exterminator beforehand to explain the extent of the problem, the layout of your house and see if they can complete the job outdoors. You can also ask the exterminator to video chat or set up a phone call to exchange as much information as possible before you begin the project.

Do exterminators offer remote or virtual services?

Typically, extermination takes place at your home or place of business, but you can ask if the business is offering special accommodations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across a profile that states the exterminator is offering remote services, ask what those services include. But if the job has to be done in person, be sure to follow the CDC’s guidelines on social distancing or see if you can postpone your appointment.

How much does it cost to treat a house for termites?

Termites are not only creepy-crawly, they can literally eat your house out from underneath you. Termites feed on damp and dry wood and can chomp through your house at an alarming rate. The national average pest control cost for termite extermination is $240-$400. Treatment costs can be higher for an extensive infestation. Here are some examples of average pest control costs for termites:

  • Liquid treatment of subterranean termites: $3-$4 per linear foot.
    • For $75 per year, a company may offer a maintenance plan that provides inspection of the property and renewal of the warranty.
  • Liquid treatment of subterranean termites: approximately $400 for a 2,000-square-foot home at $3-$5 per linear foot.
    • The price is higher for additional work such as foaming and drilling inside of concrete slabs.
  • Fumigation treatment of drywood termites: $1,200-$1,500 for a 30,000- to 35,000-cubic-foot home
    • Fumigation is measured in cubic feet because it fills the airspace of the home and infiltrates the wood that the termites may be colonizing. The cost of fumigation is affected by the number of levels in the home as well as the square footage.

How much does it cost to get rid of cockroaches?

Cockroaches are not only ugly, they are difficult to get rid of. Quick and resilient, they can be hard to get rid of without professional help once they have inhabited a house. Nationally, the average range for cockroach pest control cost is $80-$130. Extermination professionals typically provide a free estimate to determine the extent of the infestation. They’ll check for the main sources of the bugs, identify bug access and entry points into your home, and determine the best method for elimination. There are a variety of cockroach extermination tools including gel baits and traps, pesticide foggers, desiccants (which dry out the cockroaches), neurotoxins, and other pesticides. Pest control costs can also cover preventive measures like regular spraying and trap maintenance. Some regions of the country are much more prone to cockroach problems than others, so pest control costs may need to be part of your quarterly budget. Cockroaches love dark, humid, and warm areas and water sources, so place traps near your washer and dryer and under your sinks.

Is it safe to use an exterminator spray?

Exterminator sprays and pesticides are generally toxic, and toxicity levels can vary by product. Therefore, it’s best to speak with the best pest control specialists near you to determine the safest way to get rid of your pest problem and reduce the risk of exposure. If a pesticide is needed, it’s likely safer to let the pro spray your home.

Keep these tips in mind if exterminator spray will be used in your home:

  • Exterminator spray is not safe to swallow, inhale or touch.
  • Leave the house when the spray is being applied indoors.
  • Ventilate your home by opening windows and doors upon return.
  • Keep pets and pet supplies away from the chemicals.

Is monthly pest control necessary?

Monthly pest control service is only necessary for certain situations. For example, severe ant or cockroach infestations may require monthly pest control in order to destroy the infestations at the source.

Talk to the best exterminators near you to get an idea of what type of service you need — and how many times you’ll need follow-up treatments.
