Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can a notary come to you?

While some notaries work entirely in an office, a notary can also come to you if they offer mobile services. These notaries may charge a higher fee than those with brick-and-mortar businesses because they have to charge for driving time and may offer emergency pricing for customers who need signatures urgently.

Where can I find a notary?

You can find a notary in your area by searching for them online, where you can compare several pros’ ratings and reviews. Read customer reviews to get an impression of their reputation, and decide if you need a mobile notary (someone who comes to you).

Make sure that whoever you choose to work with can display the proper credentials in your state, and finish your search by contacting several notaries and requesting price quotes.

Tye was right on time. Very professional. She explained what we needed to do with each page. She was warm and friendly like we had Known her for years. I would recommend her to any one who needs a notary public.

Her ad shows a $6 price for 1, 2 or 3 notarized signatures -- a great deal! Since she list her business as a "Mobile Notary Service", it seems obvious that travel would be involved. Once I tried to book her to notarize a simple, one-signature page, she quotes me a fee of $65. A $59 travel fee for a $6 service?! Sounds like Bait-and-Switch to me!! I replied that I would be more than happy to come to her to avoid the high travel fee. She told me that the travel fee would still apply because she would have to meet us somewhere, "for safety reasons". I totally understand and would expect her to take safety precautions, such as meeting somewhere public, but if you charge a travel fee no matter what, then include that in your pricing. If I went to a clothing store to buy a $5 shirt they advertised, only to find out that they charge a $35 fee for inbound shipping and handling and a $20 fee for retail store overhead expenses for a total of $60, I would no longer think that the shirt was a good deal, nor would I buy it. Most importantly, a Notary is a position of trust and they should not be conducting business in a misleading or fraudulent way. People who dont act ethically should not be rewarded, they should be called out and held accountable for their actions. Until she updates her pricing to include these inflated fees, I would encourage everyone to protest and refuse to use her services.

Why you should hire a notary public

A notary is licensed to approve signatures on official documents related to real estate, prenuptial agreements and much more. For example, they can help you sign contracts and other important legal forms, like mortgage loans or refinancing documents.  Find the nearest notary public near you and read their reviews. If the closest agent is too far, hire a notary who offers mobile or traveling services in your area.
