Planning ahead

Things to know before you get started.
7 Ways to Prepare for Pilates
  1. 1. Get a good teacher

Find a certified instructor and learn some basic principles in an organized class. Developing proper movements and breathing techniques ensures every Pilates session is a success.

  2. 2. Wear comfortable clothes

Pilates demands freedom of movement and should always be done with bare feet.

  3. 3. Invest in a yoga mat

Pilates does not require a lot of equipment, but a good mat is essential for comfort. Choose something portable and not too thick or thin.

  4. 4. Bring a towel

For some exercises, it is easier to maintain the correct position if you place a towel under your head, or under your hip bone. Your instructor should tell you the correct placement.

  5. 5. Stay focused

Refrain from talking with your friends during the exercises. Focus on your breathing and movements for maximum benefit.

  6. 6. Learn the 100

This move warms you up and gets your blood pumping, and is a great first move to learn.

  7. 7. Be patient

Don't push yourself too hard to see immediate results. Listen to your body, and stop if you feel discomfort.
