Heat wouldn't come on. Repairman came over later on the same day (Friday) I had put in a request.
After a thorough check of our Burnham gas boiler, during which he explained to me what he was doing, he found that there was a problem with the vent damper (which controlled the ignition) and that there was also hardly any pressure on the boiler. The fill valve was really old and had a missing part (was told these valves need to be replaced every couple years).
I asked him if the vent damper had to be replaced, and since I'd been having trouble with it off and on in the past couple years, couldn't we just bypass it altogether? He consulted with his boss over the phone and told me that was indeed possible.
After he was done with determining what the problems were with our system, he gave me the bill for the labor done that day but he said I didn't have to pay it that day.
The following morning (Saturday) he called me back and gave me a detailed description of what needed to be done and what the replacement parts would cost. If I hired the company, the fee for his labor of the previous day would be waived.
On Monday morning, two other repairmen from ACC&H came over and installed a new ignition control (goodbye pesky vent damper), a new fill valve along with a back flow preventer, and a 1/2 shark bite ball valve. They checked the pressure and bled all the radiators in the house. After the job was done, one of the repairman took the time to explain to me what they had done.
Everything was done in a timely manner and for what seemed to me a reasonable price ($470 for parts and $385 for 4.5 hours of labor).
Based on this experience, I heartily recommend Atlantic Coastal Cooling and Heating.
