Awesome work. I had glass in five windows replaced. The quote was very reasonable compared with others. The work was done quickly and the windows look great! Replacing the glass was a lot more cost effective than replacing the whole window and the work made a huge difference in the look of my house.

I hired Antonio Originally to paint some windows, I was so impressed with his quality of work that I had hired him for 2 other jobs. What I have come to appreciate is Antonio’s ability to be a real handyman, he can do painting, carpentry, plumbing and electrical. I intend to hire Antonio again and again.

I am very pleased with the results. I remodeled my kitchen. Several things were done - old back splash was removed and new back splash installed, over the stove microwave installed, granite countertop supports installed, painted cabinets and walls, added trim and molding to a patio door and window, etc.

I love my new windows! We had 10 large custom windows installed in our sunroom and they look beautiful! Chris and his team were very professional; they showed up and finished on time and kept my property clean. I now have high quality windows that are not only beautiful but energy efficient. I would definitely hire them again!

Jose and his team were great! We had had water damage on our ceiling caused by a leak from the condo above us. The ceiling was extremely wet and cracked, and water was dripping down onto the floor. Jose and his team fixed our ceiling in no time, taking extra care to ensure the patched area was seamless with the rest of the ceiling. He even painted our window trim and re-stained an area of our floor at no additional cost. Great work, will definitely hire again!

I got my original windows replaced by them and it was the easiest, smoothest process! From receiving the quote, to the actual replacement and instillation. I am so happy with the results and will be using The Home Doctor again in the future!

After I moved into my condo I realized that the patio door and bedroom window were the originals, from 1987. It was so drafty in the winter and the HVAC would run constantly. The bedroom window also had some damage. So I decided to hire Star Home Improvements to replace both the patio sliding door and bedroom slider window with Vinylmax ones. They were custom fit and with white trim. What I really appreciate about Star Home Improvements is they made sure that everything was consistent with condominium association standards to match the rest of the community's replacement patio doors and windows. The workers were extremely polite, clean, and efficient. Customer service was top notch. It's been a few months since the installation and boy, did I make an excellent decision! Our electric bill has already decreased by $58. The energy savings of the Vinylmax triple pane windows cannot be beat. A bonus is the sound proofing the high-quality glass provides, along with the added security. I highly recommend this company for custom door/window replacement and installation.

I recently had flooding in my basement through one of my windows during all of this rain in Northern Virginia, so I needed a glass service company that could make it out as soon as possible. Sasa Glass sent someone within 3 hours. Alejandro G. arrived on time and he was very professional and courteous. He thoroughly inspected the outside and inside around the window and said that the windows were in good shape and likely only needed some caulking and silicone. THANK YOU for the honestly. It goes a long way with me. I will certainly call them when we need glass installation or service.

Weather delayed my roof replacement project but when the window of opportunity came the Crew came and replaced my roof in 1 day. They even replaced some damage sub roof without any extra charge. I plan on using them again for other home improvement projects.

My kitchen was old and badly in need of a face lift. Curtis came in and turned it into a beautiful and modern piece of art! I have a 13 foot island, gorgeous cabinets, new sink, window, appliances, huge pantry and floors. He was there everyday until it was done with excellent work done by him and his workers.

Absolutely the best experience I've had with any kind of contractor. Priced very reasonably and even completed some other household repairs to my gutters, deck, and siding on the day that the replacement windows were installed. I highly recommend Arlington Glass!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
