It's been quite a few years ago, to be sure, that I had lessons from Randy. My experience was nothing less than excellent. I took bass lessons from Randy, starting with the beginners books and working my way up. If I had a particular music style or preference, Randy would find me material to learn and do lessons with. If there were particular songs and bass lines or styles, Randy would transcribe from the song itself and show you the technique(s) involved. My main areas of interest were blues, rock and funk. What I learned from Randy got me to open mic nights where I would learn to jam with other musicians and bands. From there I kept working with Randy along with plenty of practice on my own till I was accepted in a blues band and I began play for pay. Along with teaching you the music and the technique what is perhaps the most unique and handy thing about having Randy for a teacher is that he always had gear to sell and I bought plenty through the years. All quality pieces that I still have most of today. You will find his personality pleasant and soulful. He helps you grow without pushing or getting nasty. Just like anything that requires work, you will only get out of it what you put in...but if you are willing Randy can take you on a wonderful musical journey and you will be amazed at what you can get accomplished.

DJ Brian Wirt was one of the best decisions I've ever made, and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a dj. He kept the party dancing all night with just the right mix of fast and slow songs. I did a lot of searching and spoke with a lot of DJ's & Bands, and ultimately felt DJ Brian seemed to be the most professional, and offer the best value for my money. I did not want some basic or cheesy DJ. I knew my wedding was going to be special, and it was. DJ Brian did everything perfectly, and played a great selection of music. Everyone I spoke to said they had a great time. Thank you for making my wedding as special and memorable.

Steve Shook with Cool Blue Band played for our daughter's wedding reception. Steve helped us with music selection and reception program organization. The band played for 4-5 hours. Steve was very helpful in planning and the band was excellent in performance. They played exactly the type of music we wanted and we all had a great time. They were flexible in letting a family member perform with them and our daughter received her dream reception. The band was there when they were supposed to be and I would not hesitate to hire them again. They really were fantastic!

The Boomers are a Dancing In Paradise favorite. We have patrons who follow them faithfully and are here every time The Boomers play here. They are very friendly and interactive with the crowd. They have a special ceremony and song for folks celebrating birthdays. Most of our Patrons are Dancers and The Boomers play very Dance-Able Music. They have been playing here almost Monthly since July 2014 and I have Danced to them for 5 years before then.. We will continue to book them. To find their Gigs here look at DancingInParadise.net . Coming from an international background, Uche the singer/songwriter has created a band out of his passion for music and life. The music may sound simple, but there is nothing typical about the way this group integrates pop, rock, soul, and roots music. The love for what they do is evident in the energy they exude in every song, and it's no wonder they're getting all the attention in the Midwest. The songs ring familiar, much like radio hits from the past, but anchored by this big voice, and that's why they stand out. The band is not trying to reinvent the wheel; they're just trying to preserve what is great in this world, and that's good music. Creatively, their influences run parallel to bands like Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Dave Matthews Band, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but also they convey that raw heartfelt emotion like classic rock bands of the past, such as Journey, Foreigner, and Steve Miller Band.

We are professional musicians with a respect for the client. We tailor each of our shows to what the client has requested in the area of our dress, the volume we play our music, the style of music most preferred, and etc. We always conduct ourselves in a professional manner during intermission, while setting up and tearing down, and while on stage. You will not hear vulgar language or songs that can be offensive to some folks. Our music ranges from jazz with a hint of blues to some country, some rock. If the client hires us for a dance then we will stick to the more danceable songs in our repertoire. If it is a more formal type of event where the guests are enjoying a meal or simple mingling and conversing we would play more of our jazz selections.

The David Holland Band is a group of mild-mannered ordinary guys who, every weekend, metamorphose into ordinary guys who are in a band. They are not exactly supermen but are not exactly normal either. These guys just like to have fun and love to play music -- primarily country music with some good classic rock thrown in for a good measure. If having fun is infectious, then get ready to have some because these guys are highly contagious. Rapidly becoming known as the most "danceable" band in the area, the David Holland Band offers everything needed for a great time while attending to their performances. Here comes the fun!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
