Gino was a pleasure to work with. He did an outstanding job all around. He was very polite and respectful of me and my kids. I would definitely use him again if any thing pops up. He moved us from our old home to our new one, then the completed a list of imperfections. We needed some framing, drywall, painting and he even fixed our leaky faucet. He finished all the work in great time and a wonderful finished product. I would advise anyone to hire Gino if they had to move or any home repairs.

Jay was great to work with! This was a challenging job in an original plantation home with 14' ceilings and 12" stacked crown molding. Jay and his guys did an excellent job finishing drywall and painting. In fact, they even had to paint the ceiling again because of a change order on the paint color! The communication was fantastic, the workmanship was great, and the price was very fair. I will happily work with Jay and his guys in the future, and I recommend him for any project.

We hired Br Pro Painting to complete multiple projects around our house that we'd been meaning to handle for a couple months now (painting, drywall repair, fence repair, broken tiles in the bathroom, a door that wouldn't close, etc.). When Gustavo and Ruben began working, we discovered that our drywall repair actually included mold, termites, and rotten wood and became a much more extensive repair than anticipated. They communicated every step along the way to us and did the work right (no easy/quick fixes) at a price we felt was fair. Overall, we would recommend Br Pro Painting to anyone looking to tackle projects around the house (even beyond painting). They worked efficiently, were very friendly and trustworthy, and overall did a great job.

I am very pleased with the ceiling drywall repair done by Shaun Brown of The Handymen. Shaun took his time to do good quality work - it is obvious that he takes pride in a job well done. The texture and paint blended flawlessly with the existing ceiling. I would highly recommend Shaun for this type of work. Shaun is also punctual and his word is good.

Better than average work quality, very professional, very responsive to any request which I made, final invoice was slightly more than I had expected, but the problems faced in a 40 year old home one can expect the unexpected to happen as what happened in my home, i.e., one of the 3 other companies which I had contacted for an estimate, possibly stole an igniter off of my furnace, which was discovered when I asked this A/C installer to check it out, as winter is just around the corner. That added over $300 to my final bill. As per punctuality, due to the heavy demand on A/C installers in a high heat area, he did the best that he could do to stay on target with the arranged start time and finish time and finished within 4 hours of the promised completion time, even with all the extra trips to the parts supply house. Job well done! Thanks.

My foot accidentally fell through my attic floor when investigating a "squirrel incident." WallBros Drywall sent Edward to my house the very next morning. Edward was courteous, professional, and very quick (finished in an hour!). On top of the excellent service, they beat all of the other quotes I received!

We hired Erix Garcia to install our kitchen floor. It turned out so great, that we will be hiring Erix to install our drywall, do the painting, and we are also going to hire him to do flooring in the main areas of the house. Very nice young man, very digilant hard worker. Came on time, and if he was running late, he called to let us know. So glad to have a contracter we can depend on. Thank you, Erix. Bill was awesome from the start. We have had the experience from living in Ponchatoula from 2007 of contractors not doing what they said they would. Bill always showed up when he said he would and on time. His work is fantastic and extremely detail oriented. He did Sheetrock and painting work, installed ceramic tile in the kitchen and one bathroom, plumbing work and some custom jobs. There are several more jobs I want to line up with Bill, we just have to save up the funds to do them. Thanks Bill for all your hard work and dedication to making my home beautiful again!

Morgan did great work in the bathroom re-tiling our floor, installing new shower doors and refinishing the molding in our space. His quality is excellent. My only complaint or advice is to nail down the timeline and completion date with him. Our project took a quite a bit longer than we wanted. Having said that we are certainly very pleased with the finished product.

Of all the times I needed contractor work done: roofing, tile work, plumbing, appliance repair, window installation, concrete, etc., Larry, by far, was the most customer service oriented I ever hired. Due to my work schedule I was not able to meet him face-to-face during the entirety of the project. I was set to meet him initially to do the estimate, but I had to leave before his arrival. While he was on his way, I let him know I left the key and to go in the back then call me up and I would let him know what needed to be done. That was all he needed. He would send me pics via smartphone text of the progress. He also called me at the end of the days he was at the house. NO OTHER CONTRACTORS DO THAT! NONE! At least none that I have hired. He would also offer to do other small projects he noticed while he was there. If I had the budget to do them, I would have had him do those too. He really seems to enjoy and take pride in the work he does. I had some moderate drywall work at a small rental property I was readying to put up for sale. Larry exceeded my expectations. Definitely recommended. Would hire again. Thanks, Larry!

Installation of a storm door. They came equipped and ready. Attention to detail was used from the start. They definitely didn't rush the job and took their time doing things right. Their installation actually looked better than the previous old install. Pricing on the job was the lowest I was given. I wouldn't hesitate to contact them first on any other jobs I may have. Don't look over these contractors.

They did an awesome job on our back door, replacing the frame and repairing the drywall. Kim and her staff were very professional and responsive. Would definitely hire again and recommend to others.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
