About
Hi! I’m Ian. I’ve been teaching guitar, ukulele and bass for over 25 years. All ages/all levels. Before anything else, *PLEASE DO NOT SEND A MESSAGE OR REQUEST BEFORE READING THIS FULL SECTION* As per the business model of this company, it is completely free for you to send me a message or request but please only do so if you’ve at least read this full section and at least want to try a free lesson. I happily give a free lesson to all potential new students, as long as I know they are genuinely interested in potentially continuing from there if they like it. And if you decide not to continue after the free lesson, that's totally fair. That's what free samples are for. That said, below are my most frequently asked questions: WHERE DO THE LESSONS TAKE PLACE? Anywhere you have internet and a computer. I teach my lessons virtually. I taught only in-person for 17 years and then shifted to virtual in 2018. All you need is a computer and a phone and I will make sure you're fully set up before we do the first lesson HOW MUCH ARE LESSONS? The first one is free. No pressure at all to continue. And I want to put my rates in this intro section but I'm not allowed to by the company! However, they are listed in my profile below. Either way, I always keep them fair and below current industry standard :) WHO CAN TAKE LESSONS? I teach anyone from beginner to advanced and any age from 6 and up. There is no age that is ‘too old’ to start. Bass, guitar and/or ukulele. DO I NEED AN INSTRUMENT? Yes. But if you don't have one and want help/advice for getting one, I'm happy to do so. But again, assuming it's to then at least set up a free lesson. DO YOU TEACH HOW TO READ MUSIC? Yes. But I also don't insist you do it. MUCH can be done without it as well. If you made it this far, great. Hope to hear from you soon!

I've been taking lessons with Ian for over 7 years now. We started in person on ukulele. A year in, Covid came along and we shifted to virtual. I figured I would miss the in person lessons but virtual has been amazing and now I know they can be great if done well- which he does. And it's also nice to not have to leave the house! We have a shared Dropbox folder. He sends files to see and read and even recordings to practice along with in between lessons. Also, a couple years ago, I wanted to shift to guitar and so we did and it was seamless. He took much of what I learned on ukulele and used it to help me understand the guitar better. I still take lessons with Ian to this day and I couldn't recommend him more!

Ian has done fantastic work with my stepson. He's blossomed and has found a love for the ukelele. My stepson is also learning music theory that, as a musician myself, I wasn't exposed to until much later. He's excited to eventually add on guitar lessons, and to develop as a musician. I'm really excited to see where his continued time with Ian will take him!

Hey I didn't even know he wanted to move onto guitar! Ha. Well I'd be happy to move him in that direction too. Ukulele is a great way to start before moving onto guitar. Thanks for the review

My son started guitar lessons with Ian 5 years ago, when he was in kindergarten. Ian takes the long view when teaching, which has really worked. He’s phenomenally patient, and both our son’s successes and failures have been part of the process. It takes the pressure off to progress on an arbitrary schedule, and as a result, practicing guitar has organically become his daily habit. We really credit Ian with cultivating his skill, interest, and dedication. I can’t recommend him highly enough.

Thank you so much! Jacob has come a long way. I love that from the get-go he's always seemed really into the lessons and the idea of progressing. He has a passion for music and that's easily half the battle overcome. Looking forward to more as we continue on!

I wish I could select all of these qualities because he is an incredible teacher. I have taken guitar and ukulele lessons from Ian for nine years. He is beyond talented and smart. He is so kind and patient with my siblings and me. Not only has he gotten me to an advanced level of guitar, but has expanded my love for music. He is extremely professional and creates a comfortable environment for students. He always follows through and structures his lessons in engaging, motivating ways. Ian is the perfect teacher, and I would recommend him to anyone who is interested in pursuing their passion for music.

Wow! Thanks Adley. And I must say you are also an amazing student. Over the years, you've practiced a lot and it's paid off. Looking forward to seeing what else we can accomplish in the future!

Ian had been an outstanding teacher for my 12yo son. He has taken a methodical approach to learning the instrument, and he’s even incorporated music theory into the lessons. My son enjoys learning from Ian and has made tremendous progress. I couldn’t imagine changing to another teacher.
Ian's Music Lessons (read 'about' section!)'s reply
Thanks so much! Lessons have been a lot of fun with Bobby. Here's to more!
