FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
Growing up, my family never had any pets because my parents were allergic, even though we all wanted a dog. When I was 10 years old I volunteered at the Humane Society in my town for the first time. Ever since, I've been volunteering at Humane Societies, Greyhound retirement facilities, and shelters everywhere I've lived. In high school, I discovered hypoallergenic dog breeds, and my family was finally complete with the addition of our two Portuguese Water Dogs.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
Most often, I am hired to pet and house sit while my clients are out of town.
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I recently dog sat for a Labradoodle, Lulu, who for years would lunge and bark and dogs while walking out of pure excitement. Her owners had hired private trainers, tried many classes, and read all the books they could to try to control Lulu and make walks more manageable. When I took care of Lulu, I positively reinforced seeing dogs on our walks, and by staying calm myself, trained Lulu that there was no need to get excited when she saw another dog. When her parents came home, they were thrilled they could pass a dog on the sidewalk and Lulu didn't make a move.
