Russ's carpet crew did an amazing job on our carpet installation. The best we have ever had. Real nice guys and reasonably priced too. I will always call them in the future. We are looking into having them install our hardwood and repairing some tile work now too.

One of the best contractor experiences that I have had in a while. Shawn (Sharp Skill Floor Covering) was very professional and friendly from the start. He was very insightful (about the work to be done), punctual, and very responsive. The quality of the work that he and his crew performed was superb. I would use this contractor again.

We hired M&M to paint our guest house. It was formerly an office and most of the walls were covered in a tacky wallpaper. When our contractors were finished, M&M came and transformed the entire house from top to bottom. They had to do a lot of repairs, caulking, and trim work, prime, and then apply 2 layers of paint, but they never stopped working from the time they were hired until the job was completed. I was completely shocked when I saw the work they did around the window hardware, it was as though not a drop of paint ended up where it didn't belong. They also took care of our brand new floors to make sure they did not get scratched, or any paint on them. Their employees worked wonderfully, did not need any supervision, and they were courteous and professional. Monica and Marco are the owners and were some of the nicest people we have hired for jobs such as these. We will absolutely be hiring them again, and we recommend them above all others for your painting needs.

Jon completely remodeled our en-suite master bathroom from top to bottom. It was an extensive tile & granite renovation job and went off without a hitch. The shower is to die for, as is the vanity, tiled walls and floor. We were so happy with his craftsmanship and professionalism, that we had him do other work around the house, in particular our kitchen back splash and other bathroom vanity and such.

Last week my husband and I contracted with Woody's Home Improvement to install a new railing in the entry of our raised ranch home and tile back splash in the kitchen. We honestly could not be happier. In the past we have had other contractors who always left a mess and never put finishing touches on jobs. However, Woody paid so much attention to every detail from start to finish. He offered us design ideas and options for both jobs. He thoroughly explained how each job would be done and estimated the time and dollar amount with great accuracy! =) We have an 8 month old in the house and he was so considerate about noise and cleaning up after each job so our little one didn't find any left over nails or pieces of wood. I truly believe you just can't find good contractors like Woody these days. He is the guy that will treat your home as if it were his own. He improved both the safety and value of our house with these two jobs. We wish we could rate him with 10 stars!

JP came to look at one project for us and ended up taking care of two! We had a few different contractors come through, but JP was the most professional and had the best vision for completing what we were trying to accomplish. Everything went perfectly according to plan and we couldn't be happier with the finished result. We discussed costs up front and everything came in on budget. Very responsive to any questions or concerns that came up and had perfect suggestions for when we didn't know which direction to go in. Very happy with everything and won't hesitate to call for any future projects!

We had an unique experience with Wheldun, they went out of their way to provide us with comfort. We were trying to renovate the house with our limited budget with a hope to earn some summer rentals but we were no close to finish up on our project with the contractor we were working with. He did’t show up at work for couple of days plus we had not made any contract/agreement with him since he was referred by a close buddy. We thought we would atleast try to speed up the project if we could have someone else do the roof so, we contacted wheldun who promised to finish up work by the next day. The twist to the story is when we told the contractor with whom we were working with that we will simplify your work since he was one man army and have wheldun take care of roof, he got offended and said he will not work with us and told us to either cancel the deal with Wheldun or find someone else to work with. Here we are talking about a gutted house to the studs which basically needs everything. So, we reached back to wheldun with our issue, they not only provided us with additional discount based on our situation but also promised to provide us with resources to finish up rest of the work at the same rate which the contractor was charging us. For us what Nick and Jermy did was more than client and contractor relationship. They have out weighed our expectation and we cannot thank them more.

Bob “the builder” as my family and I refer to him is my go-to contractor for any work we need done. Bob built our entire 3000 sq ft house 14 years ago and we have had him back several times since for new projects. He is a quality builder, honest, reliable and reasonably priced. When we wanted an extra 2 car garage, we called Bob and he constructed an exterior 2 car garage for us, which turned out beautiful. He worked with us on the size, style and layout and made sure it complimented our main house structure. Years later, when wind storms caused a tree to fall through my garage, I called Bob again to make the repair. He did everything from fixing the soffit, siding and gutters to reshingling the roof. As always, he was professional, responsive and understanding as I worked through the cumbersome insurance company process. Recently, I hired Bob again to build a large elevated composite deck. His workmanship is sound and of high quality, his prices are reasonable and I highly recommend him to others. Bob has been building for a long time and he knows his stuff. He and his crew show up promptly every day (even when it’s 98 degrees out!) and I appreciate that they work hard and make consistent progress until the job is done. He communicates with me regularly to keep me informed on the project. I continue to be happy with Bob’s work and will have him back again when we have another project for him. Thank you Bob for doing great work whenever we need it.

I was incredibly pleased after working with Alexandra and her team! I desperately needed to renovate my dated bathroom and they guided me through the process after I had chosen the tile and design. This was my first renovation as a homeowner and they listened to my needs but also stepped in with advice. They recommended that I go with grey rather than white grout on the floor and I am so happy with the final product. Recommend hands down and when the time comes for further renovations I will be choosing them!

When you are on a winter vacation and a pipe bursts in your home and you literally lose walls and ceilings and floors and are left with studs and a major insurance claim, the one contractor that you would want to have by your side is Keith Gilmore. Keith took hold of the situation and secured the required trades (his choices were in line with his own caliber of expertise) in order to get our home livable once again. It was a very long road but Keith was with us every step of the way. His workmanship is impeccable, he takes enormous pride in what he produces, is very innovative and is always open to ideas, both accepting and offering them. He is an honest and fair businessman and I have shared his name with family and neighbors. If I ever need to make any improvements and/or "fixes" he is the one and only contractor we will use. We have been enjoying our "new/old" home for awhile now and it still amazes me to live each day surrounded by this beautiful transformation.

I hired JC to correct a botched tile job for a rather lavish downstairs master bathroom I was creating/remodeling. He was extremely patient, showed fastidious attention to all details with quarter rounds and ceiling molding etc. JC masterfully took care of each detail and is clearly well versed in every aspect of construction.

John came in and finished a job that was abandoned by another contractor. I'm thrilled to have found him here. Very nice guy who gave me options and made sure I was happy with everything before the work was started. Pricing is fair and his work is solid. He installed my tile backsplash and regrouted the the floor tiles that were incorrectly done by my old contractor. Everything looks great. I would highly recommend his services and I already have him scheduled for more work at my place.

The job was to install the tile underflooring and lay tile for the 8x10 bathroom floor. This was the first time I have used Chad McGee and his assistant Jay for this bathroom repair after a burst heating pipe. They were simply outstanding and worked together beautifully. Chad is very professional, precise, does beautiful work and is a pleasure to have in one's home! He arrived when expected, even a bit earlier, and both he and his assistant got right to work. They did not waste a moment. I would HIGHLY recommend Chad McGee Tile and Construction. Flawless!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
