I researched roofing companies to have our house re-roofed. I contacted 5 companies ... 2 never showed up to even quote after they set an appointment, 1 quoted me DOUBLE what Storm Works quoted and the last company rep was, to be blunt, a bit strange and left me not feeling uncomfortable about awarding them the project. Sean from Storm Works was very professional, prompt and most importantly followed through on what he stated. When his crew showed up it was very obvious they knew exactly what they were doing. The work was done properly, we were guided through the process and at the conlusion you would have never known they were there with the exception of our new roof. A job well done all around! I would highly recommend Storm works.

Stephen is a consummate professional - his work is outstanding and is super personable. Stephen and his wife completed a brick- up (about 3 feet) of my window, taking the time to explain in detail how he was going to complete the job. From the moment of the first laid brick, you can tell Stephen is a true craftsmen, and had a passion for the masonry trade. Stephen, well done! 5-stars - Joe

Our experience with Clean Slate was great! We live in a multi level brownstone, so I knew the job of interior and exterior window washing would be a tough one, particularly with its old windows and tricky storms. Frank and his team were very professional, and spent an extraordinary amount of time making sure the job was done well. We will definitely hire Clean Slate again for future jobs.

For our open house we Had some of our ceilings painted, walls painted and lots of trim work!! (Our windows and some doors were all dark brown- we wanted them white to be more modern). The work was quick and clean (no drips or marks anywhere to be found) and Reubert was very easy to work with, responded quickly and was really flexible as we added a couple of Windows last minute. His prices are really reasonable - would definitely recommend him!! If the reviews let me post pictures I would have!

Thank you Stella Construction. I had the company remodel my kitchen. New hard wood floors, counter tops, cabinets, tile back splash, window casings, baseboard, and paint. The back splash now absolutely compliments the counter tops and cabinets. Everything came out perfect!

I had a hole in one of my dormer windows patched. Billy was extremely professional and accommodating from our first conversation to the end of the job. He did a little bit of extra work that he felt was necessary and still kept the cost of the job at the same original cost that we discussed. I would hire him for other jobs in the future. It was nice to realize that I hired someone as professional, dependable and dedicated as Billy.

I hired Felipe and his partner a few weeks ago to replace 8 windows and 2 doors. They did an AMAZING job... Not only was the price good but they were able to start the job 2 days after I approved the estimate. I dealt with Felipe and his partner, who were both polite, always at the jobsite and kept everything clean. The job was done exactly on time. I will highly recommend them to anyone. Thank you, thank you and THANK YOU!!!

Mark installed new windows in my 1850 home, and we had to coordinate with a moving company so that they were there at exactly the same time. Mark was easy to work with, and responsive to the schedule changes, and installed my windows beautifully and at a reasonable price, I wiuld highly recommend his company!

AMAZING....I needed a deep clean: windows, cabinets, doors, baseboards, everything. I've never done this because I always do it myself and feel that it wont be done well enough. I broke my hand and needed it done. She was AMAZING. I was very impressed with her work and would highly recommend her.

My wife and I hired Pat to do our siding. The short of it: Pat and his crew surpassed all of our expectations and then some! We cannot recommend them enough! The long of it: From beginning to end, this was a great experience. Pat quoted us a highly competitive price (in fact, it was the lowest one), he started the job on time, worked with his crew every day, finished on schedule and on budget, and added a number of extra architectural details (e.g., gabled roof line, exquisite door and window frames) at no extra cost. His quality of workmanship, attention to detail, and pride of work completely transformed our very ugly house into a dream home that is now the nicest house on the street – something Pat himself had promised he would do. As for his crew, these guys were great: they showed up early every morning, worked extremely hard throughout the day, cleaned up every day, and were very kind and courteous to us, our little daughter, and our dog. We actually miss having them around! As a testament to how great of a job Pat and his crew did, we now have random strangers stopping by to tell us how beautiful our house now looks. In the end, we could not be happier with how everything turned out. Pat and his crew delivered on everything they promised, and then some!

We met Gary Rawding, owner of Symphony Home Improvement, at a home show (the first one we ever attended). We set up an appointment to meet with him, that day, and are now the happy owners of new white CompositWood windows. From the beginning, our experience was a good one. Gary spent approximately four hours explaining the different types of window, and the technology used in the windows' compostion. In the end, we chose CompositWood windows because we felt that they were the best option. The installation crew came on the day scheduled and were on time. They each introduced themselves and were extremely courteous throughout the day and a half that was spent putting in 20 windows(including one very large one). They did a very thorough job and did not leave any hint of a mess. They were very professional. When the job was done, Gary came to inspect the windows to make sure all was well. It was. We are now considering replacing our front door, and will be calling on Gary of symphony Home Imrpovement. We love our windows. On a scale of 1-10, I would give all involved a 15!

3 years ago I needed to replace my roof. I also had two skylights I knew needed to be replaced but was always so worried that if I replaced them I would have issues. A friend recommended I call Budget Exteriors, I am so glad I did. When I met Lou and showed him my issues he was very accommodating to my concerns. Lou is very knowledgeable about his products and the process of work that needs to take place ~ I was very comfortable working with him. (I did get other quotes to see if he was fair and he absolutely was.) Going on 4 years and my roof still looks great and my skylights are issue free. So this summer when I wanted to replace all the windows in my house. I called Budget Exteriors for the job. Lou again explained what would be my best options and I was impressed again. His communication with me through out the job was a pleasant add. He seems genuinely concerned for the homeowner to have a good experience. My favorite is my front bay window. My previous front window was flush to the house. Budget constructed my new bowed bay window and it is gorgeous! I would highly recommend Budget Exteriors to anyone.

Marine Home Improvement was not the cheapest of the bids we received for this job, yet we selected them and are very glad of it. The bid itself was professional looking and detailed. The details that it included helped us eliminate other vendors who hadn't spelled things out like: using the painted aluminum (instead of yucky J-channel), or if they were insulating. The quality of the work that is being done makes us glad we selected Marine Home Improvement. Worth every dime! Here are some reasons: Excellent work ethic - they show up and get right to work in the early morning. They work through cold and drizzle. They clean up after themselves both as they go and at the end of the day. High Quality work - There was a small area of rot they uncovered that they made sure was fixed correctly. They didn't just cover things over. Everything lines up aesthetically, and is clearly true and level. Attention to detail - The window framing is amazing. Watching them do it has been a source of interest for many of the folks that regularly walk down the street. People stop and watch. Personality - They are pleasant and polite, and when we've stopped them to ask about something, they are always accommodating of our questions.

I originally was on the website to price a slider for my breezeway. When I saw that the small size of that order would trigger a $250 surcharge, I added the replacement of some non-functional windows to the order. I had a question on the available sizes and got great assistance over the phone from Kerry in their office. Once I put the order through, an appointment was made for Brian and Tom, the installer, to come to the house to do the actual measurements, and bring sample windows so that I could see what the different types look like. Another positive with Renoviso – Brian actually tried to talk me out of the more expensive fiberglass windows until I was really sure that I preferred fiberglass to vinyl. It was so nice to work with someone who wanted to be sure that I was happy with the final choice, even if it would reduce the amont of the total order. While they were there, I realized I might as well bite the bullet and replace ALL the windows. They had no problem doing the additional measurements. There was some back and forth on the ordering to verify the number of panes in the windows and they came back to the house another day to check some measurements. Tom had some concerns about the work involved in replacing the slider and ended up recommending that the slider replacement be deferred until I replace the deck it opens out to, and add the slider replacement to a deck rehab project. I was amazed that a vendor would recommend dropping part of an order and losing that part of the sale. I had felt that I was in good hands with these guys, but that was the clincher! He also added a repair to a porch post that had nothing to do with windows! Kerry in the office and Brian were great to work with too and always available to answer questions. The scheduling of the installation was well-coordinated with my work schedule and the guys who did the installation were great. They were there for two days, and I think they left the house cleaner than they found it each day! I love the windows and highly recommend Renoviso, and Advantage Siding who did the installation.

Scot was very communicative. When we first discussed my options he priced out a variety of options with pros and cons and helped me think them through. In the end he made a small, raised seam metal roof which not only looks great but works as promised. Scott is nice, professional, does beautiful work and was very neat and tidy. I would heartily recommend him.

Nick and his crew did an exceptional job on my windows and screens. I loved the fact he did the window cleaning traditionally. The crew took their time and what I loved most was Nick took me around the house after the job was done to see if I was satisfied with the job. Best window cleaner I have ever used.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
