Introduction
Hello students and parents! I am a scientist in the biotech industry (with experience in bioengineering as well) and have been tutoring for over 10 years, specializing in middle school mathematics, algebra, test prep, study and organizational skills, and organic chemistry. I obtained a Master's degree in chemical engineering at Columbia University in 2019, and my BS in Neurobiology from the University of Texas. When I took the GRE in preparation for my graduate school applications, I scored 169/170 (96th percentile) on Quantitative, 164/170 (94th percentile) on Verbal, and 4.5/6.0 (84th percentile) on Writing. I am very purposeful about customizing tutoring to match specific goals, learning style, and the student’s personality. I can help you with specific questions or I can lead the session if you aren’t sure where to begin. I am very patient, I have worked with all kinds of students at many levels and personalities. Everyone learns differently, has different motivations, strengths, and struggles. My goal is always to encourage and build confidence. When a student is not understanding, I seek to understand where the disconnect is happening. Teaching is also creative -- I approach confusion as an opportunity to find new ways of explaining and guiding the student. As a student I enjoyed developing my own study and organizational skills, so now it is rewarding for me to pass along this knowledge and keep those skills sharp. Tutoring is also personally rewarding because it allows me to grow as a teacher -- I am always trying out new ways of approaching and explaining problems. Feel free to reach out with any questions! Rose is an amazing young lady, she is a good match with my middle school aged granddaughter. Offering her ability to break down math problems for a simpler understanding. She is outstanding and is modest in her own accomplishments.

FAQs

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

It is very important to not treat every tutoring session with the same "formula." Just as everyone learns differently, students also are unique in their motivation, interest, goals, time commitment, focus, frustration, energy, and desire to lead or be led. The first few sessions are critical in determining how to balance each of these needs and how to present information in a way that they will understand.

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

I mainly work with high school and college students, as well as students young as 12 and adults preparing for the MCAT or GRE. I have experience helping struggling students who are not particularly interested in math and science, and can lead and encourage them appropriately. I also work with students who prefer to guide the session themselves, who bring specific questions and topics for each meeting.
