If you're looking for someone who can do the job whom you can trust to be fair, you'll get no better than Dominique. He makes his daily living installing drywall, which is what you want if that's what's needed. My friends said that we could do it ourselves, but I'm sure it would not have looked as polished. Dominique works quickly and efficiently, cleans up after himself and gives you exactly what you bargained for. He said he'd be fair in price, and he delivered. Expect him to do the job the day he visits if it's not too big a job. He picks up the materials at the local Home Depot, puts in the time, and your problems are solved.

John was extremely professional, courteous and punctual. His workmanship was excellent. This was a small job, but he didn't act like it wasn't worth his time - approached it with enthusiasm to have the opportunity to work with us. We hired John to patch/repair drywall, skim coat walls, and prime in a bathroom. VERY happy with his work, was very competitive in his rates, and WILL hire him again!

On-time, friendly, brings all of his own tools, neat and, most importantly, does a fantastic job. He had a clever solution to the plumbing for our new bathroom vanity (old vanity had different plumbing line-up) as well as mirror installation. He is so professional that Handyman doesn't explain his quality of work.

I was very happy with the work that Joe did installing bifold closet doors in my home. He gave me a reasonable estimate, arrived promptly at the pre-arranged time and completed the work within a reasonable time frame. Afterwards, he cleaned everything up and brought the unused pieces and parts to the trash. And the work was done exactly as I had hoped. I cant think of any way the experience could have been improved, since Joe did everything well.

"It's hard to find good help these days", does NOT apply to Mike and his crew. I got 5 quotes (3 from Thumbtack) for a plastering job and threw out the top and bottom quotes. My wife and I read the online reviews for the remaining and selected MJK for the job. Mike wasn't on time, he was early! He was meticulous with his prep work to make sure no dust came into the main house or plaster got on the flooring. They worked quietly which was important for me as I work from home. The work was quick and the clean up was thorough. I looked over the four walls and ceiling that he put up and couldn't find any imperfections. We are very happy with the finished product. I will hire him again for future jobs and would recommend him to my family and friends. -Chris Foxboro, MA

I hired HD construction to repair my deck and install trim and lattice around the perimeter. Heraldo was extremely responsive and was able to schedule me in shortly after he reviewed and quoted the job. The overall result was great and I was very happy with the work. I would definitely recommend HD construction and would hire again for future projects.

Adonias was very easy to work with. He is friendly, creative, and flexible. He has a very busy company, so sometimes my projects took longer than expected, but he is good about communicating. Eagle7 remodeled two bathrooms for me (I will upload pictures after I finish cleaning and organizing them). They took out two fiberglass shower/tub units, built a new tub with tile surround and a tiled walk-in shower with glass door. They replaced sinks and countertops, replaced flooring (tile in one, vinyl plank in the other), repaired some plumbing, replaced fan/light combos, and built out walls where needed. In addition, Adonias and his crew helped with a few extra requests as they came up, without complaint. We were updating most of our house this month, so there were many contractors in and out, a dog, kids, and general chaos. The crew took it all in stride, they were patient and worked around our schedule. Prices were very reasonable, and they worked with me to think through what could be salvaged/reused to minimize costs. Adonias also sourced materials as needed, not overbuying or upcharging. Highly recommend Eagle7.

Kyle and his associate were a pleasure to work with and did an excellent job refurbishing our bathroom. They showed up on time and finished in a timely manner. It was nice to deal with one person who could do, or had the resources to bring someone in, all of the work, plumbing, tiles, electric and carpentry. I will be keeping his number for all future projects.

We hired Brian to renovate a small downstairs bathroom. His work exceeded our expectations. He recessed a bathroom cabinet that was difficult due to piping in the wall, he demolished and replaced tile, put in a vanity and installed a properly vented fan. This was difficult because we had no ductwork and easy way to vent it but he created an ingenious solution. He was sweet, kind, professional and expert at his craft. He did not rush the job but took his time to do it right. We will be calling him for many more projects!

Jose and his partner did an exceptional job on removing my kitchen tiles, cleaning up the subfloor, and installing the prefinished wood. What separates these guys from the others I’ve worked with is their honesty, value, and reliability. They showed up exactly when they said they would and backed up any further materials they needed to buy by providing receipts. In the end, the quality of their work was fantastic. If you live in the Somerville, Medford, Arlington, or surrounding Boston area, I highly suggest you hire these guys.

We highly recommend Paul and his team. These guys were easy to work with, extremely responsive to our needs, and reasonable on price. We had a family room that was covered in wood panels. Everything was taken down and replaced with drywall along with installing a picture window. They were very helpful throughout the entire process and had a great eye for detail. Paul and the guys were respectful in getting the project well-done within a quick time frame. I would hire again for future housing needs.

Our bathroom was long overdue for re-painting. As you can see in the "before" picture, we had a lot of peeling paint that needed to be removed before we got to anything else. Erik was able to complete the job in two days, and our bathroom looks phenomenal! The first day, he scraped the loose paint from the ceiling and walls, primed and sealed everything, and then applied 3 coats of plaster to bring it back to a smooth surface. The next day he primed and painted the ceiling, walls, and door, and cleaned up any plaster residue. I'd highly recommend him for any painting!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
