Justin did a nice job replacing some exterior trim on my home. He was professional and patient, and willing to explain the specifics of the project. His work was excellent and the cost was reasonable. He paid particular attention to the small details. Justin was methodical and didn’t rush through the job like some contractors. Also, unlike many contractors, Justin is not afraid of climbing. I would highly recommend Justin to a friend for exterior trim repair or replacement.

ER Construction is by far the best company we have ever had do work on our home. We have had some horrible experiences in the past with contractors who didn't show up, finish work promised, were sloppy and rude. ER Construction has finished all the work in our 1850 colonial and it has surpassed our expectations. The painting, floor refinishing, ceiling repair, and floor installation has been incredible and we are having them paint the exterior as well. We are very happy and satisfied and are recommending them to everyone we know!

The Clean Remodel team came in and gave us a super professional quote to paint all the ceilings in our house. The full project scope was a bit too expensive for our budget at the moment, but we were able to hire them to do a few rooms while we DIY'd the rest. They were able to do all prep, priming and painting for 3 rooms in a single day, including cleanup. A pleasure to work with and the work looks great!

We hired M&M to paint our guest house. It was formerly an office and most of the walls were covered in a tacky wallpaper. When our contractors were finished, M&M came and transformed the entire house from top to bottom. They had to do a lot of repairs, caulking, and trim work, prime, and then apply 2 layers of paint, but they never stopped working from the time they were hired until the job was completed. I was completely shocked when I saw the work they did around the window hardware, it was as though not a drop of paint ended up where it didn't belong. They also took care of our brand new floors to make sure they did not get scratched, or any paint on them. Their employees worked wonderfully, did not need any supervision, and they were courteous and professional. Monica and Marco are the owners and were some of the nicest people we have hired for jobs such as these. We will absolutely be hiring them again, and we recommend them above all others for your painting needs.

Crew came in did a great job. Roofing assuming done well, is somewhat of a commodity and very price driven. Mike quoted a very fair price. Crew was courteous. Large container stayed in my driveway a little longer than necessary; however, I made use of that by purching my garage of junk.

I really feel like I hit the jackpot when I went on Thumbtack and without knowing anything about the drywall contractors on the site, I randomly picked Joseph Drywall. I don't think there is a more reliable and professional team with such great work ethic and abilities. I am beyond pleased with the work hey did to restore my home after experiencing significant water damage. My home looks brand new and I could not be more happier! Thank you Joseph Drywall! Sean and Kaitlin showed up on time and quickly got right to work clearing out a foot of snow from my super narrow/annoying driveway and my front and back porch and walks. They were quick, courteous and professional and really did a fantastic job for what I consider a fair price. As I'm still recovering from a lower back injury, I was worried I wouldn't be able to take care of this all myself so I'm super thankful to have had the help. Have a ton of other odds and ends things to do around the house and Brophy Builders will be my first call for that and any other snow removal needs! Thanks guys!

Paul and his crew did a really nice job with remodeling our kitchen. Most important, they showed up when they said they would, were sensitive to cost containment, and were very responsive and open to feedback. Paul seems to legitimately care about his business and reputation, and came back to address very small things that we noticed later, which is a rarity given our experiences with the broader base of contractors that we’ve used in the past. We’ll be hiring him again to renovate a bathroom given how easy he has been to work with.

Last week my husband and I contracted with Woody's Home Improvement to install a new railing in the entry of our raised ranch home and tile back splash in the kitchen. We honestly could not be happier. In the past we have had other contractors who always left a mess and never put finishing touches on jobs. However, Woody paid so much attention to every detail from start to finish. He offered us design ideas and options for both jobs. He thoroughly explained how each job would be done and estimated the time and dollar amount with great accuracy! =) We have an 8 month old in the house and he was so considerate about noise and cleaning up after each job so our little one didn't find any left over nails or pieces of wood. I truly believe you just can't find good contractors like Woody these days. He is the guy that will treat your home as if it were his own. He improved both the safety and value of our house with these two jobs. We wish we could rate him with 10 stars!

Joseph is straightforward and diligent in his approach. He communicated well and kept us apprised of everything throughout. He has a talented crew of tradespeople and earned our trust such that we hired him for a second project to remodel our kitchen as soon as he was finished our first project of repairing our porch and roof from a fallen tree. Thank you, Joseph. Job(s) well done!

I hired CKB to do some work at my house, I have never seen a crew that works as hard as this crew, they come everyday and work steadily through Love the rain, I could sit on that porch all day and watch it. We don’t get enough of it here in Mesa,AZ. Could use some thunder with it too out the day, the work they have done for me has been beautiful, I have no complaints at all, they are all kind and very nice to work with, the manager Watson Braga was great to work with, he gave us some great ideas that made my house look beautiful, he did our living room over all new walls and ceiling, he did a gorgeous marble fireplace and he layed down our hardwood floors, they came out beautiful. I highly recommend Cape, kitchen and bath, there prices were great and the work they done for me was perfect, I have no pictures right now because I'm waiting for them to finish painting, then I'll gladly show pictures of their work.. Thanks CKB

Cedrone Contracting renovated my kitchen and bathroom, replaced floors in 4 other rooms, and took care of a lot of plumbing and electrical work. The work was done well and the timeline and price were very reasonable. I especially appreciated that I always knew what was happening and could ask questions and get answers quickly. I’ll recommend and I’ll hire Cedrone contracting again if I have more projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
