Introduction: I am a keen observer of how people learn and adjust my instruction to emphasize the student's learning style - be it visual, auditory, kinesthetic or some combination thereof. It allows the student a more immediate feeling of accomplishment and a solid foundation off which instruction can be further tailored. I am also an experienced special educator and can work with students with a variety of learning difficulties or disabilities including ADHD and Autism. Seeing other people develop their love of expressing themselves through music is extremely gratifying and I have had the pleasure of seeing many students go on to attend prestigious music colleges (i.e. Berklee) and to have successful performing careers.

Jay Breen is an excellent drum teacher, musician, and educator. I took drum lessons with Jay on and off from the age of nine to eighteen. Jay introduced me to many great recording artists, and to many styles of music. He also taught to transcribe drum beats, play drum rudiments, and read music. If I wanted to learn a particular piece of music all I would have to do is bring in a recording, and he would write out the part so I could learn it. Jay was always open to my musical preference, and he encouraged my personal musical development. My lessons with Jay were fun and productive. Jay's abilities as a seasoned musician, capable of playing many instruments, made lessons versatile and exciting. He made preparing for our annual recitals fun and challenging. The recitals taught me how to perform comfortably in front of live audiences. Jay helped me at a young age to develop a skill for listening to drum sounds on recordings. I have a lot of respect for Jay on a professional and personal level. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for a drum instructor or for private lessons.

I took drum lessons with Jay for many years. He taught me as I was discovering rock, punk, and metal music, and really instilled in me the ability to listen to a drum track and figure out how to play it. He is a fantastic teacher, and I have to credit him with imbuing me the many skills I've acquired as a drummer. His lesson plan would span many different styles of playing, from rudiments to multi-person African beats (aimed at making your 4 limbs completely independent from one another; it was truly awesome) to very complex syncopation and layering of odd time signatures. We would often deviate from the lesson plan, too, if I found a song I wanted to learn how to play, which made it all the more welcoming. He truly cared about my experience as a student and fit his plan around my interests. I remember all of my lessons with him were always worthwhile, in that he always had something new for us to work on, and I never felt bored by the material. Jay was keen to stay on top of a piece of music if I was struggling with it, walking me through where I was slipping up, and figuring out an exercise to get whatever lesson we were working on to click with me. And it went beyond just learning how to keep a beat, knowing the different between "pp" and "ff", etc. For recitals we would work out these multi-drummer pieces that required a lot of listening and filling of space. It's hard to put into words, because a lot of it really relies on feeling, groove, etc., and now everything comes very natural to me, and I truly feel like I owe that to Jay. Anyway, if you've made it to the end of this review, there should be no question: take lessons with this man!

I studied with Jay for a few years off and on at a local music store during my beginner/intermediate stages of my musical career, and I still look back to his teachings and the contents of his notes and transcriptions in my notebooks TO THIS DAY! He was a GREAT teacher and musical mentor that helped me excel to the next level of my playing.
