Hired on Thumbtack
There were signs from the beginning. He was super responsive until I gave him a down payment, then started ghosting me right away to the point where I thought I was going to have take him to small claims court. After weeks of unanswered calls, texts, and eventually some stern threats to get my money back, he finally responded to schedule the work and had his crew show up. To my surprise, they were excellent -- fast, respectful, quality work. Genuine props there.
The only part they didn't finish was the staining, which Bruno told me would have to be done a few months later. No problem. I paid him for most of the work and withheld $500 for that portion. Now, months later, the same ghosting. It's been weeks and it's clear to me Bruno has no intention of finishing the job. He got what he wanted and he's transactional enough to see that as perfectly acceptable.
The irony is that, when I hired Bruno, he gave me this whole song and dance about how he's all about relationships. Stick to your word, do a good job, tell your friends, blah blah blah. I wanted to like them and give them more business because of the quality of their work, but this kind of unprofessional behavior isn't acceptable.
I recommend working with another contractor who deserves your trust.
