Introduction: Dr. Ryan Suleiman offers private lessons in composition, arranging, and music theory for all experience-levels and all ages in person (Somerville, MA) and via Zoom (anywhere). He completed his Ph.D. in Music Composition/Theory at University of California, Davis, and has many years of experience as a professional composer/arranger. He has collaborated with renowned ensembles throughout the United States on music for orchestra, opera, chamber ensemble, soloists, dancers, and even puppets. In addition to teaching composition and music theory privately for over 10 years, he has taught as a Lecturer at Sacramento State School of Music and was an Associate Instructor and Teaching Assistant at UC Davis. He has also helped students prepare for their theory exams in programs such as AP and Certificate of Merit (Music Teachers Association of California). Ryan's aim as a teacher is to help his students become the best version of their artistic selves and open them up to new possibilities. And of course, to have fun in the process. Any style is welcome, and to that end he loves to help students explore their own interests while introducing them to new ideas. Feel free to get in touch for any questions and/or to schedule a trial lesson. You can learn more about Dr. Suleiman's work, view a CV, listen to sample, or watch his interview series, "Reflections on Music and Nature," on his website. Ryan was a great teacher and I would have continued working with him if I didn't have to stop taking lessons because of work conflicts. He was so easygoing and understanding, but also clearly an expert on all things music! Ryan is a wonderful teacher and a wonderful human being.

He patiently introduced me to fundamentals of composition that greatly improved my work. He also brought a great many composers to my attention and provided insights into what made them great. His intelligence and tact are amazing. Very enjoyable times.

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

See pricing scheme above. Only additional fee is +$15/lesson for traveling to the students home within 3 mi of East Somerville.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I like to start out by asking questions of the student which allows me to assess their musical experience, interests, and goals. Even people who supposedly "don't have a music background" know more than they think. It's always fun to imagine where a new student might be able to go with their creativity.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Ph.D. in Music Composition/Theory from University of California, Davis. Bachelor of Music in Composition/Theory from California State University, Sacramento. 15+ years of professional experience as a classical composer.
