Sal is very professional and reliable. He fixed a water stain I had on my ceiling and painted the bedroom and bathroom ceilings. He was also responsive to fixing a crack and repainting the area on my wall. There was evidence of the crack. He did a fantastic job and I would recommend him to anyone looking to paint or wallpaper their home.

I Highly recommend Mike Levy for his efficiency and knowledge. He helped us remove and rehang three doors and they required extra effort to make them function properly. We would definitely hire him again for any construction jobs we may need in the future.

Elvin was great! He painted all of the ceilings on the first floor of my house. He came out to look at my job the day I made the request, scheduled the work for 3 days later, finished in a day and my ceilings look fantastic! I couldn't be happier and decided to have him do more of the paint work that needs to be done in my new house as a result.

George removed ice dams for my neighbor and me after the 2015 blizzards. He responded quickly, gave us a good deal, and took excellent care of both my house and my neighbor's house. Ice removal supplies and contractors were nearly impossible to find at the time, and he came to our rescue. We were very grateful for his reliability and good work.

Paul did a wonderful job hanging wallpaper in four rooms of our home. Two of the rooms were tricky as was the repeat in the paper. He handled it with ease.

Andy is a rare find. He is true professional and craftsman and such a great person to work with. We hired him to replace the wallpaper in our hallway, foyer and stairs as well as paint our kitchen and mud room. The wallpapering project was challenging as we had significant wood trim and detail that he had to work around. Andy masterfully wallpapered around all of the tight spots and made our home look beautiful. As a painter, Andy doesn’t take any short cuts and carefully prepped or kitchen before painting. He even corrected some of the painting mistakes that our previous painters left. His attention to detail and expertise on our project was much appreciated. Working with Andy was a delight. He is extremely responsive, follows up consistently and is honest with his recommendations. Andy has a pleasant and positive can-do personality. He was very polite, patient with our project delays and accomodating toward our changes and additional requests. He came when he said he would and on time despite his challenging commute. He was very reliable, cleaned up his work area each day, and respectful of our home. Andy’s price quotes were also very competitive and accurate which we also appreciate. Overall, we had a wonderful experience working with Andy. He is such a great person and pleasure to work with. We highly recommend him and would definitely hire him again for our next renovation project! Thank you Andy for helping us make our home look great. We really appreciate your dedication and efforts!!

Sue was unbelievable from the estimate phase to the end of the job. She was hired to do some wallpaper removal in our house and not only did her and her assistant do a fast/great job but the tips and tricks she taught my fiancé' and I were priceless. I plan on recommending her to co-workers and also hiring her again if need be.

Newton was great! He was very knowledgeable and professional. We are already talking about other jobs we would like Newton National to do for us. This time, we had wallpaper removed and the walls prepped for paint. Newton was able to come by after work for an estimate and get started a few days later. He did a great job. I'd hire him again in an instant.

He worked tirelessly and efficiently to get the jobs done. We are finding out Norm can do much more than just paint walls and I would highly recommend him for all of your handyman needs!

Tim and crew were hired to convert a breezeway space into a four season room. This involved demolishing and rebuilding two outside walls, removing shingle from the other two walls, and finishing the interior to the point of being ready for painting. He installed a slider, exterior doors, and windows. From the estimate phase through completion, Tim was upfront and professional. He and his crew did quality work, from excellent finish carpentry to making sure the site was cleaned up after each day's work. If problems were found along the way, Tim brought them to my attention promptly and worked collaboratively to find solutions. The only downside of this experience was having the start date of the job delayed. Despite that, however, Tim completed the job within my required timeline. I think all builders have challenges with time/job management, so that said, Tim performed relatively well. I would hire him again, and give high recommendations. Thanks, guys, for your awesome work!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best way to remove wallpaper?

There are several proven methods for wallpaper removal; each has its pros and cons, but some are definitely easier. Peeling is usually the least painful, followed by soaking and stripping. Dry-stripping is the next most time-consuming, and steaming the most work. The average wallpaper removal job costs between $360 and $560. The method of removal can affect the cost, as steaming takes longer than peeling and will therefore typically cost more. Peeling wallpaper off is usually the quickest method. To see if your wallpaper can be peeled off, try gently edging up a corner and carefully peeling the paper off the wall in strips. If you can’t peel, then you’ll have to score and strip it, either by dry-stripping or by soaking and then stripping. Plaster walls can withstand moisture and can stand up to soaking and stripping, but drywall should not be soaked. For very stubborn wallpaper, steaming may be necessary, which is time-consuming but effective. If you prefer not to attempt these methods yourself, wallpaper removal pros have the proper tools and experience to quickly take down wallpaper and also repair any damage to your walls.

How much does it cost to remove wallpaper in a room?

The national wallpaper removal cost averages $360-$560, which will typically include multiple rooms. Pros often charge by the square foot to remove egregious wallpaper that is long past its prime. Wallpaper removal cost may range anywhere from 60 cents to $1.50 or more per square foot. A pro may estimate removal costs ranging between $160 and $300 for a medium-sized room. Costs can vary due to ceiling height, and some pros add a skim coat to make repainting or re-papering smoother. Here are some examples of average costs to remove wallpaper:

  • Foyer: 36-120 square feet, $21.60-$180.
  • Powder room: 16-36 square feet, $9.60-$54.
  • Living or dining room: 120-252 square feet, $72-$378.
  • Family room: 192-384 square feet, $115.20-$576.
  • Bedroom: 100-224 square feet, $60-$336.
  • Guest bath: 45-84 square feet, $27-$126.
  • Master bedroom: 168-384 square feet, $100.80-$576.
  • Master bath: 54-160 square feet, $32.40-$240.

Once the old wallpaper is gone, the average cost to install new wallpaper is $240-$350.
