I can't say enough about the positive experience of working with the Murphy brothers and their team. I needed extensive exterior carpentry repairs and a full exterior paint job on my house. I was given an estimate of 7 days to complete the task and that is exactly how long it took. The full crew and supervisors were here on time every morning and put in a full productive day. Most of the time we had 4 painters on the house. It did rain one day and the crew showed up to treat and paint my shutters in the garage. They did not waste any time but made all time productive. Every person on the crew, from the owner on down, were highly skilled professionals and all were professional, courteous and very nice people to work with. Their work is extraordinary and they always go the extra distance to make sure the job is done correctly. They do many little things that make the outcome even better than expected. My house now looks like it was built yesterday. The work was excellent, the price was competitive and fair, the time to complete the project was right on estimate and all members of the crew were a delight to work with. I have not criticisms to offer. I can think of nothing they could have done better. I would recommend Shawn Murphy (Murphy Painting), Dan Murphy (Murphy Remodeling) as a team or individually, and their crew without the slightest hesitation. I am very pleased with tis experience.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best way to remove wallpaper?

There are several proven methods for wallpaper removal; each has its pros and cons, but some are definitely easier. Peeling is usually the least painful, followed by soaking and stripping. Dry-stripping is the next most time-consuming, and steaming the most work. The average wallpaper removal job costs between $360 and $560. The method of removal can affect the cost, as steaming takes longer than peeling and will therefore typically cost more. Peeling wallpaper off is usually the quickest method. To see if your wallpaper can be peeled off, try gently edging up a corner and carefully peeling the paper off the wall in strips. If you can’t peel, then you’ll have to score and strip it, either by dry-stripping or by soaking and then stripping. Plaster walls can withstand moisture and can stand up to soaking and stripping, but drywall should not be soaked. For very stubborn wallpaper, steaming may be necessary, which is time-consuming but effective. If you prefer not to attempt these methods yourself, wallpaper removal pros have the proper tools and experience to quickly take down wallpaper and also repair any damage to your walls.

Is it OK to paint over wallpaper?

You can paint over wallpaper that’s in good condition and isn’t at risk of coming off the wall. This technique is particularly useful for those who don’t have the time or inclination to remove all the wallpaper in a room. Consider hiring an interior painter if you’ve never painted over wallpaper.

How much does it cost to remove wallpaper in a room?

The national wallpaper removal cost averages $360-$560, which will typically include multiple rooms. Pros often charge by the square foot to remove egregious wallpaper that is long past its prime. Wallpaper removal cost may range anywhere from 60 cents to $1.50 or more per square foot. A pro may estimate removal costs ranging between $160 and $300 for a medium-sized room.
