Having no formal training in the medium, Roy began taking photographs of friends and family, which quickly turned into a full-time passion. Roy spent most all of his free time teaching himself the technical aspects of the art, during which his passion for editorial and fashion photography emerged. In October 2002, Roy opened his first studio in a commercial building that he discovered not far from where he grew up. It was important to him to stay in Baltimore because Baltimore has always felt like home to him. It was at this time that Roy began his career as a professional photographer. Over the first two years, Roy's talent quickly developed as did his client base. Starting with portfolio and head shot work, Roy's name began to work its way throughout Maryland along with the surrounding states, and his studio grew. In early 2004, Roy brought on a full-time post-production artist to take on the large amount of photo editing and layout work that he was now faced with. In late 2004, Roy's career took a giant leap forward when he landed his first commercial advertising campaign for Chevy Chase Bank. With his studio and client base quickly expanding, Roy opened a second and much larger studio space. In 2006, Roy brought on a full-time studio manager to run his business and oversee the day to day operations. Nearly 10 years later, Roy's work has been published in hundreds of magazines, seen on billboards and in newspapers. His work has been used by thousands of individual artists, musicians, models and commercial clients, and these numbers to continue to grow daily. Roy spends a large amount of his free time teaching photography students as well as providing internship outlets to many of the tri-state area college and universities. "It seemed that there was a lack of help and support for new photographers in the professional community back when I started, and I wanted to make sure that individuals had a place to learn and get real experience in this business." "I never imagined myself as a photographer, and now I can't imagine myself doing anything else." Roy Cox

FAQs

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

I shoot projects from a billboard advertisement for Under Armour to an actor's head shots and everything in between. Over the last 11 years I have photographed nearly 13000 individuals and I have some clients that have literally returned for their 20th shoot or more. This really says something about us I think!

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

The biggest advice I can recommend someone is to make sure the photogrpaher they are looking to hire can actually accomodate their project professionally. I use a full time studio manager to make sure all of my clients, both large and small, can be taken care of before and after the actual shoot itself. I always say that the shoot is the easy part, but everything that my client needs before the shoot and after the shoot is whats important and a lot of photographers don't realize this. Also make sure you are able to view images before they are edited in photoshop and that you are allowed to choose what gets edited. Many photographers nowadays mask their abilities in photoshop by only allowing their clients to view what they want them to see. This is a very common issue with modern photography services.
