Nick came out to me in Dupont Circle even though it was Labor Day. He was prompt, polite and very professional. He repaired faucets in the kitchen and two bathrooms. He also fixed leaky bathtub and shower heads. Finally he determined where there was a leakage in my dishwasher. I checked his work and the problems were corrected. When we were missing a part, he found an open hardware shop and got there and back in no time. I appreciate his work and would use him again for any plumbing work.

Eagle Home improvements did a fantastic job repairing a pipe that burst due to faulty labor from my home builder. They showed me the damage, repaired it quickly, and ensured I knew how to properly shut off the water in the future. I will definitely use them again in the future. They were easy to work with and communicated clearly through Thumbtack throughout the process. I wish every service provider were as easy to work with as Eagle Home.

One recommendation for improvement is the price was different from what was quoted and although I understand that the price can change once the technician gets an in person look at the entire project. I would have preferred discussing the cost increase instead of waiting until all the work was done. He did explain what he was doing, but I need to talk labor and materials in conjunction with the additional cost.

I had a gas fireplace installed two years ago. Another contractor did the basic frame and sheetrock around the fireplace but didn't finish the job. Jenrri met with me in person to assessed the job and give a quote for the work. Jenrri was pleasant and professional and my two Westies both liked him. If they didn't like him I wouldn't have hired him. He said the front area around the firebox would need to have the sheetrock replaced with cement board. I was glad he knew this because not having the right materials could be a fire hazard. After meeting with him. I decided to hire him and planned for him to come Feb. 16-19, 2016 to do this job. He did this job with another worker named Melby. Jenrri and I had to buy materials from the store the first day, but Melby stayed and started working. He removed the sheetrock and also cut boards for the shiplap look I wanted on the upper front and sides of the fireplace. Jenrri and Melby completed cutting and installing about half of the boards the first day. They laid tile on the hearth and around the firebox. I had picked large tiles for the hearth and small tiles to go around the firebox. The small tiles took more time to cut and install. Some of the tile around the firebox doesn't lay completely flat because of the screws for the cement board and because the framing around the firebox wasn't level. If I had to pick again I would have picked larger tiles to go around the firebox. They would have been easier to install and wouldn't have shown that the firebox wasn't completely level. After the tile and boards were installed they painted all the boards and the two walls on each side of the fireplace. Then installed the mantle and touched up the painting. They did a very nice job cleaning up when the work was done and even put furniture and a rug back in place. They also completed the job on time. I am happy with my finished fireplace. It looks beautiful. Both Jenrri and Melby work hard and do a good job. Maybe if Jenrri did the whole project instead of finishing someone else's work it would have been perfect. I would hire him again and I would recommend him to others.

First off: great quality. I don't think I could have asked for a better realization of my plans for my bathroom remodel, which included extensive tile work and construction of a new closet. Pricing was reasonable; they were in the middle of the estimates that I got. That being said, there are a couple of negatives. The schedule was quoted for ten days, but it took sixteen. I did need to take half of one of the days originally scheduled to go into the office to support a client meeting, but a week's extra labor time to finish seemed excessive to me. Especially since after the original two weeks were finished, I had limited flexibility at work and needed to push work off to weekends. All told, with my restrictions at work, it took an extra two weeks beyond what was expected. Part of the problem was punctuality: workers were frequently late, so less got done each day. I also asked to keep a couple of pieces from the demo of the original bathroom that I never got. Overall, I would recommend this contractor if you have a reasonably flexible schedule. They truly do beautiful work, and I'm ultimately very happy with how my bathroom turned out. My designs were executed very nicely. I was just a little disappointed that it took so long.

This guy called me about my broken fridge. He was up front and knowledgeable about everything. He showed me what was wrong, had the correct parts and was done in an hour. He charged a reasonable price for parts and labor (almost $150 less then another estimate I received). He was nice, no hassle, and flexible (came at 7AM before I left for work!). No complaints at all; fridge works, I'm satisfied.

To quote George Steinbrenner about George on Seinfeld, "Hire This Man". Matt is the best contractor we have worked with. We had a very ugly white tile kitchen floor and Matt came in to provide an estimate. We bought the supplies, which he picked up for us, and he quoted us the labor cost, which was extremely reasonable for 6 days of work. Matt showed up on time each day, even coming over on a Sunday for a few hours. He was very transparent in what he was going to be completing each day and met the objective each time. He is very friendly (even stopping to pet our dogs who bothered him a few times) and personable. He even told us that we still had a few extra items left over and returned them to the store for to get us a refund. I feel like most contractors wouldn't tell you if you have left over supplies, but not him! When he was done with the project, he cleaned up everything, wiping down anything that may have gotten dirty as a result. He is very careful, laying out plastic protectors so dust didn't settle on our counter tops. I normally don't shell out 5 star reviews, but Matt is very deserving. He will be our go to when we get the bathroom floors redone in the near future!

John did a great job with our small project. He gave me a quote that included labor and materials so that I knew exactly what to expect. The bulk of the work was done in one day and he came back the next day to paint. We were pleased with the end result!

This is the first time using this professional handyman and the Thumbtack resources. My husband and I were impressed with Michael's work, his suggestions, his professionalism, and punctuality. He gave us a quote for materials and labor, a start and finish date timeline and he completed the work on schedule. We are glad we chose Michael to do this work and would recommend him to others. When we have future work in our home, we will hire Michael again. M/M DePriest

Curtis so far has remodeled one bathroom for me. His crew laid a beautiful checkerboard ceramic tile floor, replaced the vanity, vanity top, mirror, and toilet, and painted and installed all new bars and a light fixture. They are honest, hard-working, and tidy workers. They laid drop cloths on floors to keep them from getting dirty and hauled away all trash. They are great at listening to what the customer wants and fulfilling those requests. They are also punctual. I love the bathroom and cannot wait for them to begin work on remodeling my master bathroom!

We hired Bathgate Construction to hardscape our 600 sq. ft. backyard for rat abatement and aesthetics. Brad communicated in a timely manner and the price was fair for the job quoted. We saw him several times during the project, as he came to check in on his team. He recommended a slight modification to add a step into our garage area, which turned out nicely. We live in the city, with very tight space, so the job took a bit more manual labor since they couldn't bring in any real heavy equipment to get the job done faster. One minor irritation is that we were quoted 5 - 6 business days to have the job completed, but in actuality, it took about 12 business days (and a Saturday) for completion. Regardless, his team did a beautiful job on the brick laying, creating a herringbone pattern with soldier border. Overall, I would definitely hire them again and recommend them for their work.

I decided to go with Plumbing Solutions to replace both of my toilets because they offered one year warranty on labor and their price was competitive with the other companies on Thumbtrack. I highly recommend for future plumbing needs. They were able to accommodate my work schedule and pick up my toilets from Lowes.

What great workers! They really know their stuff. They were knowledgeable, always on time, friendly, and very professional and courteous. They were also very efficient and worked very fast, which is very hard to come by these days. And they literally know how to do everything inside and outside of your house. They also gave me a very good price, which was within my budget. They were able to repair things in my house that no other contractor was able to do. Thanks Blue Sky. You’re the best!

I hired Matthew to run wire, and install cable in my finished basement. I have a 100 year old city row-home, which has been rehabbed over the years, so figuring out the most efficient way to run the wiring through the floor/walls, was no easy feat! He put a lot of consideration in how to do it properly, and did a great job of coming up with solutions to any challenges that arose due to the "old versus new" architecture. Meanwhile, he explained each step to me thoroughly, so that I was always aware of what he was doing, which I really appreciated. The end result was a seamless job, that allowed me to have cable in my basement, with an absolute minimum of holes needing to be cut into the walls or floors. He was on time, worked quickly, and efficiently, cleaned up after himself, and was very friendly. He also charged exactly what he quoted me for labor & equipment, with no 'hidden fees", or last minute charges, which was appreciated! I would definitely hire him for future work, and would recommend him to anyone needing electrical work done in their home!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

    • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
    • Toilet replacement: $75.
    • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
    • Faucet replacement: $125.
    • Garbage disposal: $75.

    Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
