Introduction: I like what I do very much. I like to share a good job well done with my clients. Their satisfaction and the fee are my reward :) I do most of the work either with the help of one other, the owner if they care to participate, or by myself. I really don't want to supervise, I'd rather spend the time doing the best job I can. Word of mouth advertising is very economical. The many different tasks and jobs keep this occupation very interesting. Unlike construction, every job is different and a problem to be solved for the client The older the house the more there is to learn about the history and story that goes with each one.

I never actually did any work for Annette. No money ever changed hands. I did not know how to respond to this situation, so I called Thumbtack and this is what they advised. Through the course of talking with Annette,she changed her mind every time we discussed the job and asked for a new estimate. When I got to the house her nephew met me instead and changed the parameters again, then asked if I accepted checks. At that point, I got a little nervous and backed out of the job. Annette demanded to know why, I could tell she was not happy, all I could say was I was too busy. Initially, Annette awarded a one star review. After Thumbtack talked to her, it was raised to 3. I was sorry I could not draw firmer boundaries, ask her for one list, and offer to come back.

Emily asked me to repair some Ikea drawers from a dresser, The sides had flexed enough over time to allow the bottoms to droop and eventually fall out. Driving down to the row houses, I realized that there would be no where to work out side, So I said, plan B. I take items to my shop, repair and return them. Emily readily agreed, As I drove away, I thought all she has is a phone number, I felt that was pretty trusting. I brought them back 24 hours later better than new, having glued and flattened the bottoms and re-squared the carcasses. when I could only find a spot 10 houses away, Emily came out and helped carry them back up to the third floor, I would do work for clients like her anytime.

Grace had a 46" TV she and her boyfriend began to install. They hired me to finish the installation. I located the studs, centered the TV on the wall, leveled the mount and completed the installation. I could not find a small nut to put on a bolt to finish the angle adjustment. When I called Grace to let her know, she thanked me as said she was very happy with the job.

Alena and her room mate asked me to fix an old oak extension table. It needed the table top reattached to the pedestal. The old screws had rusted and were broken off. They received the table in two pieces. I enlarged the old mounting holes, used larger screws, tightened the legs and it was almost as good as new.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I do not do any formal continuing education. Older houses just don't change that much. The codes do though, so I get the latest books and manuals or call the town inspectors directly for my own edification and to discover if those who have come before have done the same
How did you get started doing this type of work?
My father was an production engineer. His job was to solve problems. He also liked to fix things. I got the bug from him. Only I applied it to problems centered around home renovations and repair. I also like to fix old hand tools.
What types of customers have you worked with?
The jobs I like most are moving walls fixing support beams, tiling, repairing trim and painting. I like to leave when the job seems complete.
