Social Tailwaggers provides dog training and behavior management for all ages; puppy consultation; puppy socialization class; in-home training and group classes. Our mission is to help people understand there is a better way to work with your dog to create a fun, loving, and humane bond between you and your dog. We only provide positive reinforcement training, and do not use or recommend choke, prong or shock collars.
Jody Broughton, owner of Social Tailwaggers is a Certified Professional Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) and behavior consultant. She trained under a highly respected certified animal behaviorist for 2 years before starting her business. She has been training dogs of all ages for over 5 years. Jody believes early socialization with puppies and positive reinforcement training will have an everlasting effect on the dog-human relationship and will help to prevent behavior problems.

My Izzy and myself needed some direction on how to pretty much everything. Jodi is very kind but thorough and gave us great references for products to use in mental stimulation as well as play time. Izzy is still a bit of a puppy but seemed to respond well to the tasks and to Jodi. Now we have to practice for a perfect pup!

Jody came over for our first session last night and it was wonderful! She took all the time we needed to talk through a variety of dog behavioral topics, answering all our questions and giving us a lot of advice, including advice outside of the scope of basic training or what we had discussed initially. She brought interactive food dispensing toys to show us, gave us handouts of what we talked about, and showed us how to work on specific commands, coaching us through it. Jody also educated us on a lot of different ways to ensure our dog is safe, healthy, and mentally/physically stimulated - I really appreciated how we looked at how to care for and work with our dog on the whole, not simply to teach commands. The entire session was so helpful to us, and Jody was a pleasure to work with! We're excited for either more one-on-one sessions and/or a class with Social Tailwaggers!

Jodie has been fantastic with the information and training she provides. She is very organized with her puppy classes and provides additional information on puppy care at the end of each class. She also came to our home for an individual training session and was very insightful and helpful with tips on house training and providing tips on our puppy setup, schedule, and obedience training. She has been very helpful and is clearly very experienced.

Jody came by to coach us through some issues we've been having with our puppy: nipping, barking, jumping, and leash pulling. Jody spent 1.5 hours teaching us techniques to work with our puppy, and managing our expectations so that we know what's normal puppy behavior. We're already seeing great results!
Jody was very patient, knowledgeable, and helpful as we work to train our puppy to be the best dog she can be! All of her techniques are positive, and reinforced with treats. No awful choke collars, shock callers, or leash jerking necessary.

I have a 4month old Shepherd/Lab mix and was very desperate to get some help. Not only Was she very quick to respond but was thoroughly detailed with answering all my questions and concerns about my pup. I had a phone consultation on account of meeting up during “quarantine” isn’t the best thing to do, but it didn’t just end after our session. She gave me multiple resources to use. Very obvious she cares about helping to positively raise a puppy without the use of prong collars, choke collars, etc.. and I will be signing up for her classes very soon.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
We do not have a standard pricing system for our in-home/one-on-one services. Please contact us for pricing. Pricing for group classes can be found on our website.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Our in home teaching is customized to your dog’s needs. We start with a no charge telephone consultation or email to determine what you and your dog’s needs are. Whether he needs the basics such as sit, down, and leash walking or help with behavioral problems such as resource guarding and jumping we can help. Before the initial appointment, a client information sheet is emailed to gain further information about your pet. This information helps us to see if there are any additional behavioral needs which we feel need to be addressed. We service Maryland and parts of Washington DC.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
A six month course covering Operant and Classical Conditioning and Functional Behavior Analysis was completed. This course was taught at Humane Domain by a well known Certified Animal Behaviorist, Debbie Winkler. Further education was obtained by assisting Puppy K and Basic Training classes at Humane Domain for over two years. Although there is no licensing for dog trainers, there is a certification which can be obtained, Certified Professional Dog Trainer. Jody Broughton earned her certification in 2016 after obtaining over 300 hours of dog training experience and passing the CCPDT exam. We are also a member of The Professional Pet Guild and the International Association Of Animal Behavior Consultants; a Family Paws Parent Educator, and an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator.
