Gerald Gilbert says, "I found Azarvand Tax Law through Thumbtack and they responded within 30 minutes. I explained that I had made a nontaxable withdrawal from my Roth TSP account but since I did not receive a 1099, I did not report it. Two years after the withdrawal, I received a notice indicating I owed over $93k in taxes, penalties and fees. After corresponding with the IRS twice and providing absolute proof the withdrawal was tax-free, I received a third notice indicating I did not provide sufficient proof. I contacted three different law firms. One wanted a flat-rate of $4,500 and the other one wanted a much higher retainer.I explained to all three law firms that I had provided absolute proof it was a nontaxable withdrawal and it should be a simple case. With my initial call with Azarvand, Candice understood my position and explained exactly how they would proceed and approximately how much it would cost if everything went according to plan. When everything was said and done, it only took two phone calls by Azarvand to the IRS. On the first call the IRS admitted they had not reviewed what I submitted. On the second call Audre was able to speak to an agent that pulled up my file, reviewed what I submitted and agreed the withdrawal was nontaxable and would close the case.At the beginning of each month, Azarvand would send an accounting data of what was done and the cost as well as how much of the retainer had been used.Everything they did was above board plus they did not round up to nearest whole hour but would represent the exact amount of time spent on the task.I highly recommend Azarvand Tax Law for anyone that has tax issues.Gerald"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Hourly rates for bankruptcy attorneys range from $200-$300. In total, customers spend an average of $999-$1,183 for their services. But because lawyers have different fee structures, you should always ask for an estimate from several bankruptcy attorneys in your area before hiring one.

You’ll need to conduct a little bit of research to find the best bankruptcy lawyer for your situation. Start by pulling up a list of attorneys near you. Identify a few lawyers who have high ratings, mostly positive customer reviews and the required credentials in your state.

Once you have a list of three to five potential attorneys you can hire, figure out how much they charge. Ask for a free cost estimate (what are their hourly rates?) and ask them to explain their fee schedule. Choose an attorney with a solid track record and reputation, fair pricing and the right credentials.

Lawyers typically charge for their time (typically a hourly rate) regardless of whether they win a case. Sometimes, the losing party is ordered to pay the other party’s lawyer fees on top of their own. Some lawyers also work on contingency, meaning they will take a percentage of the awarded amount only if they successfully win the case.

Before hiring a lawyer, make sure you understand their fee structure.

It’s possible to file bankruptcy without a lawyer’s help (which is called “filing pro se”) — but consider the pros and cons before you do. The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts strongly recommends you get advice from an attorney because of the “long-term financial and legal outcomes.”

You can find bankruptcy attorneys near you on Thumbtack. Start searching and comparing potential lawyers to hire.

A bankruptcy attorney helps individuals and corporations navigate the legal and court process of going through bankruptcy. They’ll explain the process to you, help you fill out forms, advise you on which chapter you should file under and more.
