Pat is awesome. I painted the entire interior of my new home but didn't have the resources to reach the high-up corners in my stairway. He got it done quickly and neatly and also helped me with a few other projects around the house while he was there. His prices are very fair and I'll be sure to have him back to help me with other jobs.

Very professional. Very nice. Organizing the pickup was extremely easy. After James and his partner had placed the oven in their truck, I asked for a quote on painting the interior of our house. They had no problem doing it, even though I had not previously mentioned this request. Would definitely use again!

Christian Wells and his team are reliable, communicative, experienced, trustworthy and do great work. I had a large complete deck replacement by them and they customized so many parts of the project, including a custom lattice and cantilever solution. His team is so good that I recommended them to my condo board to perform roof replacement work for my townhouse condo association here in Dupont Circle, as well as recommending him as contractor for a new penthouse rooftop deck for another neighbor. Christian was awarded both contracts because everyone in my community saw how dedicated his team is and how good the work product is. I intend to use 5thGen Group for interior work, as well (we had a former lead contractor who was originally hired to transform both the interior and the deck, but proved unreliable and bailed on the deck job, so I used Thumbtack to find Christian/5thGen Group and I am so happy that I did!).

Had a great experience using J-Team for a utility sink repair (that fell from the wall and broke the drain pipe). I received a very reasonable preliminary quote through Thumbtack and his subsequent complimentary visit to assess the work matched that price. The work turned out to be a little trickier and longer than anticipated but it gone done very well. I liked it so much I've already asked for quotes for additional things I need done in the house (from bathroom caulking to a kitchen backsplash installation). Jaime is a great guy and I recommend him!

I highly recommend the design services provided by Trait Interior’s Kelley Rucker. Decorating can be stressful, but Kelley made it as stress free as possible with her down-to-earth approach, positive outlook, up-beat personality, eager nature, and responsive communication. Kelley is one of the kindest people I have had the pleasure of knowing. She treated me like a friend instead of a client. She looked out for me every step of the way and had my best interest at heart during our consultation, shopping trips, and design implementation. Kelley listened intently, did her research, and took immediate action. She was ready to hit the ground running! It was refreshing that Kelley came up with a plan to tackle my design issues, sent me a course of action, and delivered. She even drove me around town during the shopping sessions and used her creative thinking and determination to overfill her car with large shopping items. She was right there at the store taking items apart and putting them back together at my home. Kelley was also accommodating and generous with her time and suggestions. Additionally, she is cost conscious and value oriented. If you have a budget, she will stick to it! Kelley loves what she does and her excitement for her work is infectious. No one else I spoke with showed the same kind of enthusiasm for my project as Kelley did. It’s important to feel like you are a priority when you want to accomplish a project, and Kelley made me a priority. I believe Kelley offers free phone and in home consultations, so you have nothing to lose by giving her a call.

I have to take issue with the review posted here by Jennifer C. KT recently completed a five-month design project for my condo and she was not only a great designer, she was a true professional and joy to work with. Before beginning the project I asked KT for a few references. She gave me the contact information for seven former clients - they ranged from a young couple just getting started in their first house with a very small budget to people who I would guess spent more money redoing their living room than I spent on my whole condo. I contacted all seven hoping to hear back from two or three within a short window. EVERY single one of them either called or emailed me, or both!, within 24 hours and they all said the exact same thing - you will not only love what she does for your home, you'll love working with her. All of them went on and on about how highly they thought of her. I almost wondered whether these people were for real...but after working with KT I can tell you first-hand that they were absolutely right. She was both creative and resourceful, identifying the things that were worth the extra money and the items that we could frankly get at IKEA that would be just fine. She regularly showed me different versions or ways of doing something and never pressured me to go above my budget. (Full disclosure: I went over but that was my choice.) KT also hired the carpenter, painter, flooring contractors, etc., that worked on my condo. They were all folks she had clearly done multiple projects with before. Not only was she professional and ALWAYS on time (not something I can say about myself) but she made sure all those she hired were professional and on time. And when they didn't finish a project to my (or her) liking, she always made sure it was redone...and never was that an extra cost to me. I'd like to be able to include a negative trait here about KT so that anyone reading this review wouldn't think I was just blowing smoke but I'm not going to make up something that isn't true. I would hire KT again for any design project and I would HIGHLY recommend her to anyone who was looking for an interior decorator and/or someone to manage a design project for their home. It's unfortunate that Jennifer didn't ask for references from people who have actually worked with KT. I would have told her how many times KT worked around my schedule, how often she went above and beyond to make the process easier for me, and that she was one of the most honest and up front people I've ever met. I love, love the new look of my place and would be happy to show anyone considering KT as their designer my before and after photos - and to answer any questions about what it was like to work with her. Add me to her already long list of very happy customers.

I have worked with Terry Varner since 1999 on more homes than I'd like to admit! She has completed total transformations top to bottom on a condo, a Townhouse, two historic homes in Baltimore City (Homeland) and our small shore home in St. Michaels, MD. She listens to your vision and works within your budget and timeline and makes the magic come to light! From complete kitchen & bath renovations to custom framing in your foyer, Terry brings out the wow factor each and every time no matter how large or small the project is. She is not only an interior decorator but truly acts as a project manager making sure the right people are doing the work and that the job is completed! I recently purchased a condo in Silo Point and can't wait to hear her ideas for house # 6, I wouldn't have it any other way!

1. Excellent work in interior flooring design in every which ways...Having 4, in total, of these interesting and yet colorful carpet-tile rugs on the first floor of the house. I really love how neat they make the space look. The carpet-tile material tracks dust and dirt well. A light vacuum returns their pretty look within no time at all. They are both functional as well as pretty. These are unique and one-of-a-kind solution for your floor coverage, and that is what I'd like to have. Chun-Fa's working style is meticulous, thoughtful and efficient for all of my projects. He never drags his feet of delivering a rug design diagram. He listens to my feedback on the proposed design and would alter/adjust the design to my satisfaction. In summary, he is pleasant, considerate and reasonable to deal with. I'd highly recommend Chun-Fa for your design needs. You will be happily surprised on how good and trust-worthy he is!!

I was lucky enough to meet Venetia Boyd through friends after she had completed their interior design. She is fun, creative, and easy to get to know. Venetia put special touches in my living room, dining room, master bath, master bedroom, kitchen, and family room. I not only loved what she did, but I so enjoyed working with her.

We hired Eliza and Edison to do a color consultation on our new home purchase. the home was built in 1994, and still sporting a lot of the original builder grade paint. The home had a cold and bland feel. Amy and Brian showed with a huge color selection and helped us pick colors to warm the house, to include all 4 bedrooms, office, family room, and kitchen. Their rate was very fare for the amount of time they spent with us. They were very patient as we changed our minds a couple times in the middle of the consult. On top of it all, they made the appointment the same day we contacted them, and the appointment was only a few hours after our initial contact! We definitely recommend them!

Signature Design Interiors staged my home in One Loudoun and did an amazing job! They brought in furnishings, art, area rugs, linens, and accessories to highlight my home's best features. The turnaround time between requesting their help and the completed project was just a couple of days. I highly recommend the team at Signature Design Interiors for staging as well as decorating and remodeling. They are top notch!

Angela is so talented and gave our house a much needed make over. She is great to work with. In our first meeting, I showed her some ideas and talked about my goals. When she came back with her recommendations, I was amazed - she totally "got" my aesthetic and just completely nailed it. Our home was transformed into a beautifully designed and functional family household. We just bought a new house and I am going to work with Angela again on a total design make over. She is fantastic!

Ashley was responsive to my request for staging. We set a meeting date and she arrived before time and gave good suggestions on additional small improvements I should do. She followed up with a call around the time I stated I would be interested in using her services. On the day of staging she was there promptly and my husband and I are VERY pleased with her services and pricing was reasonable. Her decorating skills gave the home a different flavor and I must admit it looks REALLY nice. I would definitely recommend her.

My husband and I highly recommend Jen. She helped us with closet organization when we were in a 1 BR condo and has now been helping us with the overall look and feel of our 3 BR townhouse. She's been fabulously adept at understanding each person's taste and making recommendations that harmoniously blend those preferences. (modern furniture that our cat won't damage, a parlor type room with a create-your-own-shape bendable bookcase, cordless top-down, bottom-up, easy-to-clean window shades, etc.) There are two things that I think make Jen stand out from other decorators. The first is that she can explain the construction of a house. When we talk about complex projects, Jen knows whether we're visualizing something that involves structural complications and what would be involved in overcoming those hurdles. Second, she's incredibly patient. There have been decisions that took us longer than it should have, but she didn't try to hurry the process, which is extremely helpful given life's competing priorities.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
