We moved into a two-bedroom house and our designer recommended EBRR as a general contractor for our major renovation projects. Luis, the project manager, came in, listened to all our needs and specificity notated our request. We had a complete estimate for everything within only a few days including cost and time frames. Barry and EBRR was able to accommodate with all architect's drawings, all subcontractors and permits. The work was done on time and within budget, even with the inevitable surprises that always come up during renovation. They were punctual, always respectful and very neat.

My review: Jose of EES Services arrived on the date and time promised, in fact, he showed up early to accommodate my schedule. He was professional, polite, and thoughtful in our interaction. He did the job thoroughly and completely, and worked in the pouring rain to get my gutter cleaned! I couldn't be happier with the result and I highly recommend EES Services for any of your home repair needs.

Tim was truly outstanding. He was on time, professional, courteous, and even took time to show me a few tricks when I expressed interest. I had a ceiling leak that needed drywall repair, and it's one of the toughest jobs out there, but Tim did a great job and stayed late to make sure it was done right. I couldn't have asked for more, and I'll be going to him directly for all future projects around my house.

Angel and his team were asked to provide an estimate for replacing some outlet receptacles and light switches in my home, which is a small job in comparison to some of the electrical work they have told me about. After Angel and his right hand man, Gaspar came to my house to give me an estimate for the electrical work, they offered to complete some other work for me that I could not finish due to hospitalization and surgery I recently had. They offered to complete painting the inside of my home, finish repair work on my kitchen floor and do one other small job for me. The price I was quoted for all the work was better than quotes I received for painting alone, so I took a chance and asked Angel to do all the work. Well, I was thoroughly surprised and absolutely satisfied at the outcome of all the projects they completed for me. And they did the projects in about 4 days, which is faster than what they estimated. They get 5 stars because Angel and his team delivered great quality work at an affordable price and did so with pride, professionalism and a sense of urgency. I will hire Angel and his team again if I have any other projects I need done inside my house.

Andy did a very careful and thorough job in repairing my 2 sagging shelves in the utility room in my basement. He was very pleasant and professional. In addition, the pricing was extremely reasonable in contrast to another contractor from Home Advisor who wanted to charge me $435 based on flat rate. I thoroughly recommend him and will hire him again if another job comes up.

Rosie Red has been cleaning my home bi weekly for over 4 months. They have always been courteous, professional, and accommodating. Their pricing is also very fair. Brian the owner is very responsive to my phone calls. Rosa and her team pay very good attention to detail. We (my wife and I) highly reccomend them to anyone. PS...we also had them clean our carpets and got out a stain that not even one of he big companies (rhymes with Hanley Heamer) could get out.

Erick and his team are exceptional. I contracted Erick initially to do some minor house repairs. However, after not being satisfied with the work of contractor hired to paint, I asked Erick to do a lot more work to include painting, installation of kitchen appliance, replace flooring, miscellaneous carpentry, and electrical work. Erick was so responsive to my need to get the work done quickly as getting ready to list house. Quality of work is good, Erick knows his trade and made suggestions and recommendations that proved to be invaluable. His team are hard workers and take pride in what they do. And, the pricing is exceptional. Definitely recommend and will use again in the future.

I was very pleased with the professionalism, skill and attention to detail that Saul and his assistant provided yesterday. This was a relatively straightforward carpentry repair project -- replacing a damaged wooden balustrade on our front porch, and repairing woodpecker damage on the portico above it. The price was fair, and Saul even reduced it slightly when he realized that the job took less time than he had anticipated. An excellent experience all the way around.

We just hired Cheri to come in once a week to clean. She's very nice, and was very thorough and eager to please. She was also great with my dogs. I would absolutely recommend C&H Cleaning and Home Repair. She and Harold will also be giving us some much needed help with painting.

I'm extremely happy with the service. Bill is very knowledgeable and professional. Communications were great and right on time! He not only fixed the problems for me, but also taught me some things so I could learn. The price was very reasonable. After the repairs were done, the house passed the inspection!!! I am going to hire him again to work on the basement of another property.

My experience with Mike was awesome from my initial email to the minute he completed the work. It is difficult to find a contractor who is honest, knowledgeable, fair, professional, and friendly. Mike is the total package and no job is too big or too small for him. My closet shelving and hanging rods fell to the floor one morning. One company said it fell because it was cheap shelving and quickly provided a $745 solution. Mike saw that it wasn't the shelving but that it was installed incorrectly. He was able to reuse the shelving and recommended a way to increase use of space in the closet. He ended up improving both closets in that room, and 3 other small projects I had been unable to address; and the price was right! Mike is now my "go to" contractor for all projects in my home. I trust him, his knowledge and his work!

Mr. Handyman is a passionate professional that performs above and beyond the bar. He responded immediately with a rough quote and came out to our home to complete an on-site estimate, paying attention to the details of the scope of work requested. He also identified some areas that we were unaware of which showed us he knew what he was doing. We decided to choose Mr. Handyman and we are very happy with our decision. Our project, which consisted of framing and installing drywall, had a tight schedule, yet Mr. Handyman and his crew were committed to completing the job. They were timely arrivers and good with communication as they updated us daily on progress. The completed outcome of the project was satisfactory and professionally done as we asked for. These guys are dedicated workers and we hope to have more projects with them in the future when new funds become available because they DO IT ALL!

Ray and his dad from Wenger Services installed a full house water softener for me. Ray came to test my water and was very knowledgeable in helping me select what water treatment was the best for my home. I found Wenger services to be responsive and friendly and professional. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone in need of water treatment. My new soft water is so lovely! My dishes are clean and my towels are soft and fluffy. Thank you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
