Nick was hired to check a non-working water heater & replaced the worn out coupling in no time. He also installed a new ceiling light socket, upgraded the existing wall switch, hung the light fixture & hung 3 additional ceiling light fixtures in other rooms. He is very pleasant to have in your home - respectful & friendly. Of course he is a very competant electrician! You hire a tradesman to do good work for a fair price - when they turn out to be nice as well, it's a real bonus! Give Nick your every consideration. We already have him booked to do additional work in our home & he is now "on -call" when needed for work at our commercial building for both plumbing & electrical jobs.

Jim was the answer to my prayers. I had a small electrical issue in my home that needed to be addressed urgently. The electrical outlet for my washer:dryer went out on a Saturday afternoon with a full load of laundry in it. I called Jim and he explained it would be a simple job and that I could even replace the GFCI unit myself with some instruction over the phone. Incredibly, Jim taught me how to do the outlet installation over the phone at no charge! He saved me a bunch of money, and ensured that I did the repair safely. I can't thank Jim enough for his time and tremendous customer service on a Saturday afternoon. I will definitely be utilizing this contractor for all of my future electrical needs.

Matt was great. He installed our water tank and we couldn't be happier. He even called the following day to make sure everything is alright. We will be hiring him for our next project (remodeling the bathroom.)

We just had our kitchen cabinets painted by JTR. They were original oak and we had them painted a delicate white. We couldn't be happier, they look amazing. Entire process took about 2 weeks, with only 3 days of them in the house painting. John was extremely responsive and gave me constant updates which is rare from my past experience with contractors. I would highly recommend JTR for any painting needs you may have.

Mr. Peterson did everything a contractor a contractor should do to rate 5 stars. He showed up on time. He didn't ask to borrow any equipment from me. His quality of work is that of an artist not a master craftsmen. He cleaned up after himself. This is the 2nd most important thing to me next to quality of work. Lastly, there were no cost overruns. I would highly recommend Mr Peterson and will myself be using him exclusively from now on.

Alex was a breath of fresh air as far as dealing with contractors. Not one excuse ever left his mouth. He was on time both days of the job, worked 10 hours the first day. Drywall and mudding skills are top-notch. After painting, my 1973 drywall appears brand new. I would recommend him to everyone and will be calling on him for future projects. Class act!

This company surprised me and let me know what a good contractor is. They remodeled my bathroom, gave me updates through text everyday which was very suprising, gave me one price which included everything and didn't ask for more money every 5mins and the work was exceptional. I have referred all my friends and family and they have not disappointed.

Rjmarsh construction did a addition on our home to extend our kitchen then remodeled our kitchen. They were all very polite to my family and that's a huge plus when your contractor is sharing your home with your contractor. The work they did was great and did it fairly quick. On time and under budget is the winning combo. If your thinking about having a construction project done give rjmarsh construction a shot at the bid.

As a hardwood flooring contractor, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Paul for over 10 years. He is a creative and inventive thinker, and it shows in his work. His remodels, including kitchens, bathrooms and basements, as well as a 2nd floor redesign that comes to mind, are all stand-outs. He is responsive in communication too which makes it easy to recommend him to our friends and family. My wife, a Realtor, recommends him to her clients as well.

I met Ron and the Francis Construction Group through a friend who insisted I use Ron for a bedroom remodel and a new roof. Ron is very professional, very informative and his team are very respectful and extremely talented. After the Ron Francise Construction Group finished my roof, I had my father come take a look. He immediately called Ron to put a full flat roof on is 4600 square-foot commercial building. Attitude pricing and timing. The RJ Francis Construction Group gets four stars from my father my friend and myself who have all used his services.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
