I met Sensei Jeff Mason 35 some years ago when we were both green belts in Koei Kan Karate in Drayton Plains. It was obvious he was the cream of the crop regarding razor sharp technique, fighting ability and being able to teach what he had learned in a way that made sense to anyone. Sensei took me under his wing and opened up my eyes to what it means to not just participate but to excel. He would teach from 11:00 AM until 8:00 PM and then he organized supplemental weight lifting at his house for those of us that still had something left. Sensei flew through the ranks but each time he was promoted he was by far the best at that level. I would look at videos of his tests and strive to perform with that intensity (although knowing that it wasn’t possible). If you came to the Dojo in a foul mood you were sure to leave in a much better one. Sensei has always brought out the best in me and I’ve seen hundreds of others that had the same result. Going through conditioning classes with Sensei teaching was always a treat. You could walk into the Dojo feeling like you had nothing in the tank but Sensei would motivate each and every one of us to summon the energy/heart to throw 1 more/10 more/50 more punches, kicks, blocks or other techniques. He wouldn’t let you be satisfied with yourself if you weren’t doing every thing to your maximum ability. Frankly, the thought of letting him down when you know that he knows exactly what you are capable of is a feeling I didn’t ever want to have. Long story short Sensei is the best teacher, student, motivator, counselor and friend that I luckily have had the privilege to know.

I have been working with Carlos for about three months and the improvements in my overall fitness have been dramatic! He understands that every body is different, and needs specific types of training to really get fit. For me, it is my hips that are my weakest point. With Carlos, I have strengthened those muscles without loosing flexibility while gaining overall conditioning. And no aches or pains! We work hard together so I can play hard later! In addition, Carlos works with my 15-year-old son and the change in his fitness in just six weeks has been equally impressive. Carlos taught him weightlifting and body-weight techniques that he continues at home almost every night. He is less winded in his other activities, and is definitely 100% ready to start his high school cross country season near the top of the his game. My son looks forward to going to work out!
