Great Service, owner Tom listened to what I wanted worked within my budget and had an affordable solution for my landscaping design. Prompt service, job completed the day after I hired them, would recommend them to anyone looking for professional company, respectful employees and most importantly affordable landscaping needs. Big or small jobs, they are equipped to handle both with ease. Left work site clean, something that you do not always get with contractors! Hire them again in a heartbeat!

We needed work done on our house that we are trying to sell; Mike was extremely professional and prompt in providing a detailed estimate and recommendation, and then in getting the job done. Because we moved quite far from our house, he made working with him extra easy by communicating via text and email when needed. I wish all contractors were like Mike!

Tom is the best. OI have hired him in the past to redo and extend an old deck which turned out fantastic! Now he is in the process of finishing my basement and I am thrilled with the framing work he did in the 1250 sq foot space. I will definitely continue to hire Tom as not only are his costs reasonable, he always call me back and shows up on time. When i have tried to hire out other handyman or contractors its been the opposite. A lot of no shows or half done work that I they never call me back and go dark.

My intention was to have my great room and kitchen painted when I asked for an estimate. John delivers such high quality work at a fair price, I ended up asking him if he could repair and paint 3 more rooms. It was such a relief to have a honest trustworthy contractor who goes above and beyond, especially as I am recovering from surgery. His work is top notch and I have highly recommended him to friends and family.

Jacob did a fantastic job with my backsplash. He was on time, nice, and did really good quality work from start to end. Advised me of any issues he foresaw and wrapped up the job explaining to me any issues he encountered and how he addressed them. I was also impressed that he cleaned up when he was done. This may seem like common sense but I’ve dealt with ALOT of contractors/tradesmen that do the job and leave the mess. Would hire again in a heartbeat and recommend you do as well!

Hector and his crew replaced the front half of my double drive which had been badly cracked and had sunken in. I had five contractors bid the job. Hector's knowledge and quality of materials was up there with the highest price contractors but he was able to beat their bids slightly. What really set him over the top that no one else did was that he offered to fill a large depression in the lawn next to the driveway as well for no extra charge. Maybe it's a little thing, but it shows his commitment to excellence. The driveway looks great.

A horrible windstorm blew down about 50% of my privacy fence recently. I had multiple contractors come to give estimates, and Phil showed up offering the most work for the best price(by far). He completed the work without any hidden fees or excuses, and wouldn't take my money until I was completely satisfied. My neighbors were so impressed with his work, they hired him to work on their fence as well. I would recommend Philip Presco to anybody in need of fence work. Easy to work with and overall nice guy.

We had a complex job, with our porch leaking through the wall of our garage requiring multiple solutions both inside and outside. Working with Vini was fantastic, he thoroughly investigated the issue and worked collaboratively with both myself and other contractors to develop an effective, solid solution. As well as responding to challenges found along the way during excavation. The quote provided was very detailed and comprehensive, and was adhered to. We are happy with the result and to this point have had no further issues with water penetration. I would recommend Vini and his company to anyone.

Scott and his partner did a remodeling job for us. They did the demolition, then did the drywall, painted and added a tub surround and new sink vanity. They installed a new light fixture, too. Then, they put in a new ceiling in our kitchen using drywall, painting, and added a new light fixture. We would hire them again! They did a great job at a reasonable price. My olny suggestion is that they should change the name of their company. They do construction. My sister was concerned because the name says Scotty Mobile Repair. They are more of a construction company and I am sure that they can fix a mobile phone, but we were very pleased with the work they did on an old 1922 home.

Justin completed our stair project in time for the New Year. I couldn't be more pleased. The before and after is incredible. I cannot believe I waited so long to renovate the stairs. His attention to detail and work ethic were above and beyond any contractor I have worked with in the past. I would highly recommend Fowler Built.

I needed some siding replaced on my house. A large tree slammed into it, ripping a substantial amount off. C&C came over, looked at the job, matched the siding and fixed it in no time. I was so impressed I had C&C fix a few other things around my house as well. They are in my back pocket from here on out and I feel as if I personally have my own property management/maintenance company.

Rare to find a handyman/contractor that shows up on time and doesn't call you an hour late to tell you he's going to be 2 hours late. This contractor took care of our rental inspection violations promptly and with no hassle to me. We checked out all of his references and portfolio work. We just awarded him a major rehab project.

Came over to look at my roof as I had just purchased a home that had tarps. I expected to have an immediate need. That ended up not to be the case. The day before I had mr roof come over, they were trying to tell me it was going to cost 12k, without ever going on my roof. At least I know there are still some honest contractors out there. Will keep them in mind for my future needs #honest

Refinished a full size bathroom. James does excellent work. Had a great attention to detail. When the bathroom was finished I felt self assured it was done correctly and it looked beautiful. When calling a contractor they often send out a different person every visit which always ends in a half completed mess. That isn't the case with James, he is there from day one until the job is complete. I would highly recommend his work in any part of the house. While working on our bathroom he also did small fixes in our kitchen and on the backyard deck. He gave us options along with accurate price estimates. In the end the job was completed within the time frame given and within budget. We couldn't be happier.

Tim is amazing. We were in the market for both a custom, double hung front door and storm door, and we were a high maintenance husband/wife client. Tim made several trips to our home to discuss options and changes, and he communicated with us frequently with updates regarding the order as we waited for the doors to be made and the custom handles to arrive. He and his team worked through frigid temps with the install, which was perfect. We are thrilled with our new doors and handles, and we highly recommend him to anyone seeking an honest, dependable, reliable, "shows up when he saws he will" contractor. A+, 5☆! Can't seem to upload the photos on the site, but the job is spectacular!

We had Richard of Horn Construction come over for an estimate. Our job was to mud/tape/prime and paint drywall that we had installed in our garage. Not only was he prompt, but his estimate was very fair. We were impressed that he started the very next Monday on our job. Richard and his team are real pro's. He was able to completely hide our seams and finished the drywall like we never would have been able to. If you're looking for a contractor that has a fine attention to detail, I would not hesitate to recommend Horn Construction.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
