I had Pat do some weeding & edging of my yard, sidewalk, curb, driveway, deck area, foundation line & thenhaul away all the leavings. After we clarified the scope and agreed on a reasonable price, Pat and his crew were here on time, were great to work with, did an excellent job & then even went the extra mile & cleaned the leaves off my deck & hauled them away. My wife is ecstatic & there is not a single weed in my concrete driveway joints or cracks for the first time since we bought this house over 5 years ago. Top notch work by good people at a resonable price is why I hire through thumbtack. Would definitely hire Pat again.

Leland is a proficient, efficient, and knowledgeable contractor. Our first experience with him was several years ago when he built new basement steps for us. More recently, he has expanded and remodeled a bathroom, including electrical and plumbling. He laid concrete for our driveway and built a custom gate for our fence. He installed a drainage system to relieve the buildup of water in our back yard. He installed a whole-house water filter and our water softener, dishwasher, and garbage disposal. He laid a concrete slab for our Tough Shed foundation. Our home was originally built in 1946, so there were many challenges in doing some of the remodeling. Leland met each challenge with vigor and persevered until the job was done. He even came late in the evening one night to remove and level our kitchen floor so the Pergo installers could install the new flooring properly. He is one of the most amiable people I have ever met...always having a positive, "can-do" attitude. He definitely has gone "above and beyond" expectations throughout our many projects. His work is of excellent quality. I really can't think of anything he could have done better throughout our many projects....he listened to our needs and did an excellent job meeting them. I would definitely recommend him for someone needing a competent, reasonably priced contractor who knows his stuff!

I was looking for a small section of concrete driveway to be replaced for fear of damage being done to my garage foundation. Steve called me within an hour of my initial quote submission on Thumbtack, even though he was on vacation. When the driveway was clear of snow, he came right out to do a detailed quote. The first day the weather was good enough to allow the job, he was out here working on it. The finish quality is excellent and it was done in one day. My only regret is I couldn't afford to have the whole driveway done.

I have nothing but great things to say about working with Ruben's! They were on time, friendly and VERY HELPFUL. They moved my entire bedroom set (which is extremely heavy) down a flight of stairs, then moved them into my new house with a very icy driveway. They went out of their way to help me move a couch we couldn't get in the door ourselves - they did it in 5 minutes. I would highly recommend them to anyone in the metro Detroit area, you will not be disappointed!

Ted and his crew have taken care of my yard, including mowing, triming, tree pruning, and anything else I ask them to do. I have used their services since 2010. The crew is professional and friendly. I really appreciate that they ask me if I need anything else done when they are all done. As for snow removal, they are on top of it! I was coming home from vacation in a blizzard, and was worried about being able to get into my driveway. As I was gone, I had totally forgot to call and schedule them. I was pleasantly surprised to see my drive and walk all cleared out! They truly know the meaning of customer service. I highly reccomend them to everyone!

TJ put in a new concrete driveway for me. Job took about 2 weeks, but he was the most competitive bid I recieved. The driveway turned out great except for some of the sealer pooled in an area by my house. The only way he could fix that was by grinding the concrete down, and i didn't want him to do that.

I had a cracked concrete driveway slab torn out and replaced. Nate and Jack provided quality work at a reasonable price. They answered all my questions and did the work on schedule. They were conscientious about the work they did, and both of them are very personable.

I recently bought a house and both the driveway and garage needed considerable repair after having setteled a substantial amount. I received an estimate same day and the job was completed promptly and professionally. I would personally recommend this company as I was very impressed with both the job completed and the individuals with which I worked with.

These guys provided demolition and haul away for an asphalt driveway. They were careful and completed the job that day. These guys are great for concrete/asphalt removal. Very reasonable price for the job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
  • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
  • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
  • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
  • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time.
