FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I had put a second piano out in an out building so I could play as long and as loud as I wanted without bothering anyone. It was a $5.00 special and was way out of tune. I was around 13 or so and I practiced tuning it for a year. Then I tuned my aunt's in one week. Next the neighbor and it went on from there. People started paying me and as a poor farm boy, I loved the money and bought gas with it. The jobs kept comming and I kept prefecting the trade.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
Raising pitch, tuning, repairing stuck or sticky keys, replacing broken strings, replacing worn of chewed "by mice" felt, and cleaning out all the junk under the keys which includes vaccuming. Keytop replacement. Mending cracked soundboards. Tightening loose tuning pins by using one of two methods. Lookong up the year and month the customers piano was built.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Always ask the provider what his hidden charges are if any. Ask if they charge mileage and if so how do they figure it. Ask how long they have been tuning and if they are new, ask for a reference. Do they have suggestions on humidity and temperature change? If not, you may suspect a red flage.
