Stripping old paint off kitchen cabinets at a rental unit. Kevin repainted the cabinets using an excellent glossy white color that's easy to clean. He added silver knobs that added a shimmer to the décor. Renter is highly satisfied. Previous work done on old bathroom walls/tub/tiles. Kevin installed a one piece wall for the bathroom to update it along with new faucet for tub. He has replaced two windows in this unit as we are replacing one window at a time. A very timely worker. I call him for all my home and rental work.

Roof removed and new roof installed at my home. Completed on time and on budget. Rob and the staff did an excellent job of communication and paid attention to detail. Rather large home completed in under two days. Cleanup of the debris was a major concern, and it was handled beyond our expectations. I highly recommend Building Impressions.

He got the job done. Good communication. I do not believe he was a garage door specialist - just a general handyman. However, he was able to install the door I purchased and I have no complaints about the workmanship.

Shawn Gilson did an excellent job installing a window frame and shelf in our kitchen and a new backsplash in the bathroom. We got a very fast response from him. He was able to accommodate our busy schedule and came in and gave an estimate and completed the job within a week from initial contact. He offers excellent quality work, very economically priced and in a very timely manner. Shawn is friendly, respectful and professional. We will be using his services in the future and highly recommend him to others.

Rob's approach is above and beyond anything I would have hoped for and, as someone who has moved to the area recently, I am so thankful that we met him because he has eliminated a lot of anxiety/worry regarding our "fixer upper" of a house. Before I met Rob I felt like it would just be my wife and I trying to tackle all these projects alone and without guidance. Rob has changed all that and given me a new sense of optimism regarding our remodels. The reason I can say that after a simple home-monitoring system installation is because of two things: Rob's honesty and trustworthiness. During that trip he looked at several different odd-jobs I was concerned about and, during his next visit, came prepared to fix them - showing attentiveness to the details without ever making it about money. I've never felt like he was misguiding us for his own self-interests. Rather, he has been open-minded in dealing with our requests, trying to come up with creative and cost-effective ways of fixing our home projects. What has impressed me most, beyond the fact that I think he has gone above and beyond to make sure we are happy with his level of work, is his communication skills. This goes back to him being trustworthy and honest. Dealing with Rob has been so great - he already understands my wife's desire to keep things "looking nice" while balancing out my "path of least resistance" mentality. I feel Rob is "good people" and as a family man, I think his values come through in his approach to the job. In fact, he has even gone out of his way to think of our home project ideas while shopping for himself/his family, sending us pictures of different bathroom remodel ideas. My wife and I have both talked about what a blessing it has been that we found such a versatile, fair and helpful handyman in the area. We cannot recommend him enough!

Ron helped me design a bathroom redo in my condo. He drew up plans to turn 2 small bathrooms into one larger one. He removed all the old fixtures, cabinets, shower, tub...and then did all the construction for the new room, including plumbing, tile work and cabinet installation. He also removed and replaced closet bi-fold doors, replaced all electrical outlets, and painted all the rooms. I am very pleased with the quality of his work. I was not on a tight schedule, so the job took a little longer than planned or expected because he was working on another job that took him away from my project. He always let me know when he would be here and the project came together in a timely manner.

We were getting bids to install a drop ceiling in our basement, approximately 750 sq ft. After getting a couple of bids of a week to ten days with more money than I thought was right I ran across Lief's ad and decided to give him a call. Lief was excellent, came to look at the job and gave me a price and time frame that was great. "Two day's" he said and I found it hard to believe because one guy said it would take him two days to do just the main room. So we worked out the details and the day and time we agreed upon came and Lief and his crew showed up and knocked it out in a day and a half. That included installing some cabinets and counter top in the bath that I added to the job. The best part was that although my wife has a very clean house, Lief left it cleaner still when they were done. We could not be happier and would recommend Lief and his crew every time.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

    • Trim repair:
      • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
      • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
    • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
    • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
      • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
      • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
        • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
