Tom is the best. OI have hired him in the past to redo and extend an old deck which turned out fantastic! Now he is in the process of finishing my basement and I am thrilled with the framing work he did in the 1250 sq foot space. I will definitely continue to hire Tom as not only are his costs reasonable, he always call me back and shows up on time. When i have tried to hire out other handyman or contractors its been the opposite. A lot of no shows or half done work that I they never call me back and go dark.

I hired Jim and Joe to install recess lights in my family room. They were very reasonable in price and did a great job. They also hung my tv on the wall. They were so good I asked for a quote for some basement work. They replaced all the tiles in my ceiling and added recess lights. I wanted them to fix the drywall that my boys damaged playing mini-basketball. Instead they offered a great solution of putting wood on the wall by the hoops. It looks so great! They were professional, clean and very helpful!

John and Jeff repainted my house interior, exterior doors and basement. They were both very friendly and easy to work with. The work was carefully completed in a timely fashion using high quality materials at a very fair price. They paid meticulous attention to details and John always reviewed the day's work with me to make sure I was satisfied. I highly recommend JTR Home Services.

This contractor removed rotten wood from around my porch, stopped an active leak into my basement, replaced water damaged wood inside the basement, and replaced wood around the porch with water resistant boards. The job was completed thoroughly and professionally in 3 days. Efficient, professional, knowledgeable, experienced, and hard-working.

We are so happy we found Charles Moon on Thumbtack! He installed a ceiling fan in a bedroom, ran cable wires through the wall from the basement to the first floor and repaired two lights in the basement that had stopped working. Charles was very professional, showed great care for our house and the projects he worked on for us, and charged us a very fair price for his services. We would definitely hire Charles again! We are already making a list :-)

Will Montero and his Costa Pro crew recently completed an outstanding painting project for us. They did an excellent job. They covered all floors, cabinets and counters with drop cloths and masked where needed. One of the rooms was particularly challenging because the walls had previously been covered with a textured paint. Therefore the walls needed to be completely sanded prior to painting. They did an outstanding job of making the walls as smooth as new wallboard. They did a wonderful job of cleaning up everything when finished painting. The whole crew was very pleasant and professional. It was obvious they wanted to make sure that we were satisfied with the finished results. The crew arrived at the scheduled time and worked very efficiently. I am absolutely thrilled with the work done for us by Costa Pro and will be very happy to refer this company.

Rodgers was an absolute pleasure to work with! He went above and beyond to accommodate my many (unusual) requests with very short notice. I was having a house warming party on a Saturday night, and he came late Friday night after driving home from a conference in Chicago to get started on my projects, and continued working all day Saturday up until a couple hours before the party. From perfectly hanging my wedding canvases in a beautiful wall gallery to assembling a bed to hanging a cool hammock swing and installing a light fixture in my basement, he truly exceeded my expectations. I was creating a bohemian chic lounge in my basement, and I love the way Rodgers hung the chain of the light fixture to fit the aesthetic. He is professinal, precise, personable and great at what he does. I highly recommend Rodgers for all your handyman needs! Try not to be a procrastinator like me and give him advanced notice to accommodate your requests within his schedule!! Thank you, Rodgers!!

Alex was great. Prompt, honest and efficient. He refinished our basement for us; we wanted a “practical” play and work out space and he respected that (didn’t try to talk us into what we didn’t need). Would use him again and highly recommend him.

Louie finished all the final trim work and door painting in my basement. I am extremely particular when it comes to detail work; he listened closely to what I wanted, took a ton of care to be neat and clean with every task, and did very good work. He is a licensed pro and acts that way from initial contact to finishing his work. I would definitely hire again and also recommend to others.

We needed work done and in a timely manner. We were finishing our basement and needed a bar installed, a bathroom with tile and ceilings done to finish this. Also some special lighting. Everything turned out so beautifully. We could not be more happy with the finished product and would definitely recommend this company. I felt the pricing quoted for the quality and craftsmanship I was looking for was fair and reasonable. I will use this company again!

As a hardwood flooring contractor, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Paul for over 10 years. He is a creative and inventive thinker, and it shows in his work. His remodels, including kitchens, bathrooms and basements, as well as a 2nd floor redesign that comes to mind, are all stand-outs. He is responsive in communication too which makes it easy to recommend him to our friends and family. My wife, a Realtor, recommends him to her clients as well.

I had Jeff paint both my finished basement and my 3 car garage. He inspected the areas to be painted, made all necessary fixes as needed and repainted walls and trim with a quality finish. Cut lines between trim (done in white) were straight and clean. He protected the floor and furniture and cleaned up leaving behind only an excellent paint job. I recommended him to neighbors and they were very pleased with his work too. He also assisted me with plumbing work that popped up while he was painting, so he knows his way around Home Improvements as well as painting.

Bill built a new support beam in our basement, and removed the temporary wall that has been holding up the main floor of our house for some time. He also re-built some of the concrete block wall that began crumbling, mortared it back together and re-supported all of the compromised areas. He even removed hidden debris from someone else's unfinished job without being asked to. In my opinion, Bill went above and beyond and he was confident and relaxed about the whole job, which makes such a huge difference to me.

I happened to notice water dripping down from my basement wall whenever I washed clothes and also an odd smell in the and around the kitchen and washing machine. Thumbtack was advertising their on my local weather channel, so I put my quote request on the website. Avery Construction responded and came to my home to check things out. It turned out to be a water line leak from a failed solder joint. They replaced the old leaking copper water pipes with PEX tubing with excellent results. Avery Construction also discovered mold growing in the basement. They treated it with a bleach solution and installed a dehumidifier to control the moisture in the air. The basement feels drier and smells much better. I was pleased with their work so I had them remodel my kitchen and rebuild my existing wobbly deck. They had this great idea of installing solar power light on the rail posts (see photos). They also painted the fascia, soffit, repaired rotten trim around an exterior door and saved me from another year of birds nesting in my gutters by removing poorly installed gutter guards. They also cleaned and painted the gutters and downspouts. I was very happy with the house repairs and renovations Avery Construction performed and would recommend them for any construction project you may have. I would certainly have them do a job at my home again.

Bob and Pat did an excellent job repairing our basement walls. The work was completed in a timely manner and the price was very reasonable and competitive with other estimates. I'm looking forward to hiring them again.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
