Joe did an exceptional job on the projects in my house. The biggest was covering big holes in a tongue and groove ceiling left by the removal of three skylights. The original ceiling was 22 years old so lining everything too some extra care. Joe is precise, considerate and knowledgeable. He cleaned up after himself and I could not be more happy with the results.

Julio, Has completed multiple jobs for us! Some planned and some as a result of disaster. When disaster struck he came over as soon as he could to assess the issue! He installed stairs to an attic so we could enjoy extra storage space! He finished a laundry room counter so we could enjoy more space for folding. A fireplace mantle on the fireplace was very small and unimpressive. He found reclaimed wood for us with three pricing options so we were able to pick the piece of wood that not only looked great but met with our budget restrictions. He installed the mantle and also found smaller reclaimed wood for shelves. Everything was stained to the color we requested and installed. Lastly we had a shower leak through the kitchen ceiling ( the disaster) he fixed the tile leak, ensures the area was properly drying and mold free and once we were sure the problem was fixed repaired the kitchen ceiling. He is dependable.. He gets back to you when he says he will, agrees to changes in the job, listens, is personable, cleans up and great to have in our home. I would highly recommend!

Gene and his crew refinished basement, new ceiling, new floors and bedroom carpeting. Also electrical and bathroom fans in 3 bathrooms and added designer touches to first floor with new doors and hardware. Gene’s crew was prompt, professional and keep all areas tidy and cleaned. I would definitely recommend Gene for your projects and plan to use him next spring for additional projects on my home.

Chris was great to work with. He takes pride in his work and did not end the job until he was sure we were fully satisfied. He did a wainscoting install on our stairwell.

We had Apex Construction install recessed lighting in our kitchen. This involved tearing out the ceiling, removing old fluorescent lights, and putting up new drywall. They dealt well with unexpected issues that came up, and made a good call on how much lighting would be needed. The results look good.

I’m so pleased to find Kel Heyl on Thumbtack as now he will be available to even more homeowners. Kel has done work on and in my home since 2004, from very large projects to small tasks. I love that he is such a careful, creative and meticulous craftsman – his work is never slapdash. I’ve always been very happy with the results, and can recommend him highly to anyone interested in having work done on their home by somebody who knows what he’s doing, and will do it well. Built screened porch, based on his own design. (2004) Removed a chain-link fence and posts. (October 2004) Removed textured ceilings in living room and dining room. Ripped and installed new molding for both rooms. Installed a chandelier. (April 2010) Installed a new entry door to porch, including altering and adapting the jamb. (June 2009) Hung antique coat rack. (2008) Installed a new pre-hung access door for garage. (June 2009) Re-screened porch panels damaged by cat and raccoons. (July 2011) Hung a magnetic knife rack. (February 2012) Re-shingled garage roof, first removing old layers down to bare wood. (August 2012)

I am remodeling my 1930's basement. I needed help with some electrical work...Gregg did an excellent job. He added two additional outlets as well as converting my pull chain ceiling lights to switches. Gregg is very down to earth and did a great job for a reasonable price! I would definitely hire him again!

We had rotted out Masonite siding in back of the house. Ken recommend had board siding that would match the look of the Masonite. They also recommended improved flashing coming down from the roof. The installer was efficient, courteous, and thorough. Job completed on time and looks great.

They did a fantastic job! They had to repair several holes in our ceiling where we had lights removed. They also mudded, sanded, and took our ceilings from knockdown to flat. They not only did a great job but cleaned up really well. Very happy with the work and would definitely hire again!

We had our basement finished and Tim came in and took a look around and gave us a firm quote. What we liked was how we were responsible for paying the costs of the supplies which was very transparent and allowed us to return unused supplies that we had left over. The quality of the work was great and the job was done faster than I thought. They cleaned up everyday and didn't leave a mess for us to take care of. He also recommended an electrician who we loved and has gone above and beyond anything we could have expected. The electrician replaced our old panel and set up all the wiring in the basement. He was even nice enough to help fix some old wiring issues. Tim and his crew were beyond exceptional and the straightforward way they dealt with any issues or delays was great. We would recommend Tim and his crew to anyone and hope to give referral business to them whenever we can.

Tyler and Joe had a tough job fixing the drywall and scraping popcorn ceilings of our 1978 home. It was a messy job but we are pleased with the end result. Tyler was determined to make us a happy customer and he did what he said he would do and was on top of communicating with me.

Rob did a beautiful job remodeling my kitchen. He replaced an archway that had been removed in the seventies and also raised my ceiling back up to where it originally was. I was floored by the knowledge and understanding of the complexity of the job. I will be calling Rob for my next job and all the others that I may have.

It started when they custom built our bathroom vanity through a contracted job, and we liked it so much we hired them to remodel our home office. They worked with us to design it, they listened to our ideas and had some great ideas of their own - they put it all together and we ended up with a beautiful home office, or as we like to call it "The Den" it's to nice to be called an office. Complete built-in floor to ceiling storage and desk area, floor to ceiling built-in bookshelves, new hardwood flooring matching up with the rest of the house and beautiful crown molding, We love it and enjoyed having them here. We will definitely call them with any other remodeling we may have in the future and we recommend them to our family and friends.

Rollie installed some crown molding for us in our 4-season porch. It was a difficult job due to the angle of the ceiling. We are extremely happy with the outcome and would recommend Rollie to friends and family.

I have hired Rick for many "handyman" jobs over the years and I have always been impressed with his quality of work, timeliness and ability to tackle any job even in an old house full of unforeseen surprises. Rick has replumbed my house and fixed general plumbing issues, hung screen and steel doors, wired lights and ceiling fans, done sheet rocking, layed tile flooring, installed appliances, bathroom sinks and faucets. He has redone my steps to the upstairs by refinishing the wood, running a carpet runner and adding decorative railings. He really can do most everything you ask him to do. He is reasonably priced. I would definiteyl recommend him.

Nick did a great job for us. We had a leak in a tub/shower that had ruined the ceiling and wall in the lower level bath shower. And our master bath shower needed to be redone also because the grout was falling out.. We had some water damage on one wall in our family room and we needed to have a new door installed at the bottom of our basement stairs. Plus we needed a new driveway, porch and sidewalk and new gutters. Nick was able to get the plumbers, painters, cement and gutter people in to do their work exactly when they were needed as well as the cultured marble installer. Nick did all of the demo and rebuilding of the showers and tile installation himself. It all took about 6 weeks. Part of that time was to finish one bathroom before proceeding to the other 2 so we would have one usable bathroom at all times. I felt I had an open line of communication with Nick the whole time. We couldn't be happier with the results.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
