Jaimie did an excellent job for us! He fit us in even though we asked last minute, and he couldn't have been friendlier or nicer. He installed a chandelier in our foyer with an 18 foot ceiling. He's efficient, responsive, fair with pricing and we'll definitely ask him to do future projects. Highly recommended!

Picture this. ...a flooded house, with endless tussle with the insurance company and a gloomy moldy smell , until I met Julio. From hard wood floor installation, plumbing in the bathroom, installing a storm door, refinishing partial basement from water damage to helping with other handy jobs that were not even part of the agreement, because he is s perfectionist. The best part of it all was his professionalism. He treated my home with respect and I am happy to come home again.

Gene and his crew refinished basement, new ceiling, new floors and bedroom carpeting. Also electrical and bathroom fans in 3 bathrooms and added designer touches to first floor with new doors and hardware. Gene’s crew was prompt, professional and keep all areas tidy and cleaned. I would definitely recommend Gene for your projects and plan to use him next spring for additional projects on my home.

We hired Kel to take care of a few important baby prep projects at our home. He helped us install new baby gates in three different places, as well as fixed a wobbly door knob for our garage entry door. Kel was courteous, highly skilled, and able to make adjustments on the fly to help get our project wrapped up as promised. In addition, he was very friendly with our puppy and made us feel comfortable having him in our home. I would highly recommend Kel to anyone that is looking for a skilled handyman. Thanks Kel!

We hired Nate to transform our unfinished, cluttered, basement into a functioning and comfortable family room. We appreciated the professionalism and communication that Nate provided. We worked together on a timeline, and discussed our budgeting needs, and Nate stuck to it. We now have a beautiful and functional family sitting room in our basement that was completed on time and was affordable. We are enjoying the extra space very much.

Matt and Steve were awesome to work with. They communicated to me throughout my basement finish so I knew what was going on. I was impressed from day one to the end. Both of them had great ideas if I needed an opinion they were willing to work with me and make a change. You can tell that they care and love what they do and it's not just another job to do but a passion for the job. I plan on using them again for a couple other projects in the future and would highly recommend them.

I was referred to Beckman Remodeling through a friend and used them for my basement and bathroom remodel in a 1940s-era home. Corey and his team were able to turn a dated and drab basement into a contemporary, bright and and open floor plan that we have received many compliments on. Corey maintained his timeline, was attentive to our wishes and was direct and thorough in his change orders. We were always kept up-to-date if there were any setbacks or issues that came up that were not part of our initial conversation. Above all else, Corey is extremely trustworthy and has a great deal of integrity -- you can take his word when he says he'll do something. I would recommend his services to anyone looking for a quality remodeler.

Job Scope: 1). build 24' x 32' garage w/9' double+ vehicle door & attached 8' x 24' covered porch, in backyard 2). convert existing attached single car garage into house to expand kitchen, livingroom, & dining room. Conversion to have a french door w/. Timbertech deck facing the street & glass door with side lights facing backyard & new covered garage porch. 3). Refinish old oak floors to match new addition oak floor; change out millwork & interior doors to match. 4). Reinsulate old attic 5). Install 2 egress windows in basement. 6). Upgrade downstairs bathroom 7). Upgrade electrical service to home & cable lines. RESULTS: We have lived in this house since 1984 and I have never been so comfortable to the house. Plenty of elbow room to relax and entertain, where it was once loud and crowded to the point of nerve racking. The curb appeal is great. Our house has never been so warm (existing furnace was not changed out) - no cold spots, no ice dams (a first). We interviewed 5 general contractors to rehab our home, we did not know Morgan until we met to discuss this work. Morgan is a top shelf person of honor and integrity, he lives up to his commitments and his finished product is outstanding. My wife and I would reccomend Morgan for any home construction project (and have). Thanks Morgan - job well done.

We had a ugly unfinished basement with a furnace in the middle of the room. After speaking with multiple contractors we selected Dpenn construction. David was able to creat a floor plan to get that out of the way, now we have a beautiful basement (bedroom, washroom, and bathroom with a walk-in shower). David was easy to work with, honest with pricing and scope of work, and we feel like we got a great value out of the work that was done. Would highly recommend.

The crew showed up and had all the work done in only 2 Days. Kevin looked over the basement and determined we could go with a different solution that worked better for us. The only issue we had was our triple safe sump pump didn’t come in while the crew was here. However, once it had arrived, the crew was here the next day and had it installed. I’m going to love our new dry basement.

My husband and I hired Rick to install 2 doors and some drywall in our basement. Rick came over a few times to meet with both of us, understand what we wanted, and then find some creative solutions for small spaces. He was willing to charge a flat fee (which we have found is rare) and he did an excellent job. He even found a used door which saved us some money. He was extremely clean and very flexible. We really appreciate the quality job he did and will definitely call him again when we need a handyman!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
