Jenna was amazing. She was on time (a few minutes early for set-up) and had everything ready to go including a special themed balloon for the birthday boy. She did not break any balloons while working with them which had happened at a previous party with a different artist. Every child was happy with Jenna and every child liked Jenna a lot. I will hire her again and recommend her to all the families I know with parties coming up.

Louisa was outstanding at her art and an absolute joy to work with. I asked her to do henna tattoos at a graduation party. She communicated clearly her reasonable prices, what she will provide and what to expect. She was on time, efficient, so polite, and her tattoos were stunning. I highly recommend her. I am so thankful I found her!

I did extensive research on a henna artist and Lisa seemed like a sure bet - turns out she exceeded my expectations and I can't wait to have her out again to do more work. Lisa is professional, great to get along with and extraordinarily talented.

Our company had two each for face painters, balloon artists, and caricature artists. Every person was great! They seemed to enjoy the day and engaged the people with whom they interacted - adults and kids. As a planner, it was fun to provide activities that families might not experience due to cost. I highly recommend using their services.

Amy came to a private party a friend of mine hosted, and it was great! I've never done a henna tattoo before, so I was skeptical, but it was really a fantastic way to hang out with friends. Her artistry is really superb, and seeing the artwork for a couple of weeks after was a great reminder of a wonderful afternoon.

When the kids said they had a blast with Elizabeth, I have to believe there was fun and job well done. Elizabeth was at my niece birthday party and did some face painting and tattoo on the kids hands. The kids enjoyed Elizabeth's character as well as the fun job she did. Way to go Elizabeth! Koffi A.

I recently hired Anita to provide airbrush tattoos at my daughter's high school graduation party, initially thinking it would provide entertainment for the families bringing their younger children. As it turned out, everyone wanted to get in on the action, including my 80-year mother! By the end of the night, very few guests had left the party without getting a tattoo. Anita was prompt, professional, neat, accommodating and provided services exactly as advertised, even agreeing to stay later than scheduled to handle the high demand for tattoos! I would highly recommend Anita for your next party.

Best tattoo shop I have ever stepped foot in. Layed back relaxing atmosphere, well trained and very educational about the field. You can walk in with one little idea and they can turn it in a custom master piece. I have been going to them now for the last year and half and have walked out with 7 amazing pieces of art.

Even though Minnie had to work by herself she managed and didn't rush to get to the kids glitter tattoos. My 3 year old daughter loved Minnie Mouse.

My husband and I have a HUGE Christmas party every year with up to 100 people in attendance. We hire Erin every year to come and do caricatures for our guest and she does amazing work and is wonderful to work with. It has truly become a tradition and our guests look forward to seeing her and getting their yearly caricature as a keepsake of our party. Erin’s work well exceeds other artists caricatures.

Kings Crossing/Frogtown Square hosted National Night Out in the past two years. This is a charitable event, an outreach to our neighborhood. Lisa very graciously offered her time and talent for this event. Those in attendance loved her work...one little girl said she was never going to wash her face. I highly recommend this talented artist for any children's or adult event.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.

How much does it cost to get a henna tattoo?

Nationally, the average cost to hire a henna artist is between $100 and $180 per hour. Rates will vary by location and the experience of the individual henna artist; it’s possible to find artists who charge less than $50 per hour. Some henna artists charge an hourly rate, especially for corporate events or festivals where they are providing service to multiple people within an hour. They may also charge flat rates for bridal and wedding services or special events. Here are some examples of average cost:

    • Hourly rate: $65-$85 or more per hour. Price is dependent on event size and number of attendees.
    • Starting rate for minimal palm designs: $15 or more.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands and wrist and bottom of feet up to the ankle: $175.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the mid-arm and feet to above the ankle: $300.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the elbow and the feet to the knee: $450.
